I saw all the hardware for this operation on my grandfather's barn but never saw it in action. I was of the small square bailer era and spent many a summer bailing hay and straw on the farm. Cool to still see the old methods used and like you stated, the equipment couldn't be much cheaper

As a boy in the 1950's, I pulled a wagon and hay loaders, except with a Allis-Chalmers D14. Love your video.

Grandpa drove the Graham truck to pull the hay loader while Dad did the loading. Then Mom drove the Rockne to raise the loaded hay forks to the peak of the barn, then Dad rolled the forks to where he wanted, pulled the release rope for the forks to open and drop the hay. I remember well. 😄

Been there done that back in the 50s. Did anyone notice the stack of wrapped roller bales in the background?

Nicely done. Maybe a few people can survive in the post apocalyptic world without fossil fuels

Hay doe horses is a fossil fuel, Fossil fuels are made from decomposing plants and animals. These fuels are found in the Earth's crust and contain carbon and hydrogen, which can be burned for energy. Coal, oil, and natural gas are examples of fossil fuels.

Except for using only one horse on the pully this is exactly the way my grandfather and uncle, Edward and Arlyn Schneider did it in the 1950s in Caledonia, Columbia County, WI.

How is this method better than modern bales?
@ruedaricardo
@ruedaricardo Жыл бұрын
Exactly my thoughts. Two horses and a stationary baler would be more cost efficient than modern setups. However when you factor the amount of hay you need and the small time windows nature gives you, the balance starts to tilt towards the modern balers.

John will tell you it makes better hay that stores better in the mow. For his operation, it requires less labor. In fact, when his kids were very young, he did the entire operation alone. The investment is very small compared to modern tractors, haybines and balers. He raises his own horses and raises their feed himself.
