Joe visits with Ralph and Jakob Rice in Jefferson, Ohio, who recently purchased a total of 5 Suffolk horses. They discuss their reasons for changing to the Suffolk or Suffolk Punch breed on their horse powered farms as well as showing us some of their training practices for the youngsters. It is their goal to promote this endangered breed of draft horse.

First Joe talks with Jakob Rice as he explains his work situation having a full time work as EMS supervisor as well as a RN and a farm to manage on top of that.
He explains that purchased his pair of Suffolks for many reasons:
Need to be safe around his wife and young children
Calm disposition
Not jumpy
Learn quickly
He then explains and demonstrates how he is training them to remain calm while exposing them to all manner of noises and obstacles.
Next we hear from Ralph Rice on his switch from large Percheron horses (which he used for 30 years) to Suffolks. He finds their size easier for him to harness and handle as he gets older.
Ralph introduces us to his 4 Suffolk - 7 week old filly foal, a yearling stallion prospect and two mares (one pregnant). He also talks about how he is using them not and the necessity of purebred horses to begin breeding and helping the Suffolk population begin to recover.

It's great to see such a rare breed catching-on as it seems to be. Given what the hitch-crowd is doing to "the big four" draft horses (Percherons, American Belgians, Clydesdales and Shires, trying to make towering light horses of little real utility of them) for instance i can absolutely see the need for a pure unadulterated farm horse. I use Clydesdales, and fortunately with the Clyde there are still plenty to old-school working types out there that have great muscle and bone and are not over-tall, one of my foundation mares is around 16.2, and only one of mine is 18hh which i find unnecessary. (Even show lines throw foals that seem to revert to ancestral type here and there.) I doubt Suffolks are calmer nor easier to train than Clydesdales (mine at least) but i absolutely CAN imagine their conformation being that much more refined for pure farm work - more pulling power per pound. Very intrigueing breed, thanks.

Fascinating! Can the harness be made lighter with carbon-fiber or something else high-tech? It's a beautiful contraption, but would be very difficult for a smaller woman to handle, I'm thinking....

You might look at the Swedish/Norwegian Harness. I was just in contact with someone who has his joined with snaps so that it is easier to harness his horses. Barbara Corsen may have more info??

Might be an interesting video, eventually, but I couldn't make it through the guys resume'. Please focus on the horses and farming. Your videos seem to put way too much emphasis on the people, rendering them unwatchable. You just ruined the video on the round barn a while ago by concentrating on the people instead of the barn.
