They are in my opinion one of the best bands ever, not just rock or progrock bands, one of the best bands of all time period. They are three extremely talented guys playing their asses off on every song. If you’ve seen them live the play just as well and just as hard live as they do in the studio.

I never understood how Lerxst felt the guitar was taking a backseat during the "synth" era of Rush. In my opinion. Signals, GUP and Power Windows showed some of his most creative and dynamic work. I believe the first time I heard it live was the R30 tour and it was one of my favorite songs from the entire show - just spectacular, thematic and such a great mood, even in that very festive setting. Great reaction, Tone.

I listen to this album at least twice a month in my car, and this song has only in recent years begun to hit me in the heart. Even as a cold war kid, I didn't have the life experience until the last ten years to be able to feel how heavy this song is.

For me, it may even be my favourite Lifeson album...then I was 16 in 1984, and the 80's have a certain nostalgia for me. The guitar playing is so good throughout the whole album. Solos, power chords, arpeggios all of it.
@markhaselow8315 Жыл бұрын
Whenever someone mentions Rush, this is the first song I think of. To me, it is the diamond in the crown of Rush’s catalog. It’s power and message are transcendent, and it is one of the greatest songs ever written. Alex’s solo is amazing, Neil’s drumming is as tight as it gets. But what I find particularly moving in this song is the way Geddy walks down that last “Brother can you spare another war?” line. The emotion in that brings me to tears every time. The Garden, from Clockwork Angels is the only other Rush song that hits me quite like this.

I don't believe Rush played this live (much) at the time, but they brought it back for the R30 tour (2004). I remember it was near the top of lists of songs people wished they would play live, and they took notice. (Losing It was up there too, but that didn't happen until they had someone on violin.)

Guitar solo? Have you heard "Freewill"? He RIPS on that song!! By the way, this is one of my favorite songs, Between The Wheels! You're totally right about Alex holding back. To me, he was the driving force in the band in the early stages, 1974-1978 in particular. If you listen to 2112 or watch his live La Villa Strangiato perfornces circa 1978, you can see he was the band leader at the time. Give the first side of 2112 (studio) a listen, and you'll gain a whole new appreciation for Alex Lifeson's greatness.

The Chorus and Instrumental on this song flow SO well and I think you are right that Neil's signature Ride Cymbal work is the key to that. At a live show, Alex's guitar would growl so menacingly it would fill the amphitheater on this song. He is a master at using those effects to full advantage!

Probably my favourite solo, he seems to drag Neil along with him (I think it's more apparent on the Snakes & Arrows concert version) rather than Neil laying the beat and Alex fitting a solo in (not that they do that anyway) but this really highlights a deep inter-play and composition between the 2 of them. It really highlights how in-sync they are, and once I heard this I started recognising it in pretty much all of Alex's solos there on in.

the reason why you're getting stressed out is the time signature. It's alternating between one bar of 4/4 and one bar of 15/16. 15/16 is just one 16th note short of the standard 4/4, so it feels like the next meaure is starting slightly sooner than you think it should. It makes it feel like the song is moving on before you want it to, just like the lyrics describe the world moving on even if you're not ready for it to. It is nothing short of pure genious songwriting.
