If you think about it, these guys were playing these 2 hour shows with extremely difficult music most of the time night after night at this point in their career. This is such an incredible set! Just imagine how physically demanding this would have been for Geddy vocally or just demanding for any of them. This set is insane and the fact that they could play it flawless and still keep going track after track is incredible. Truly the greatest band ever!

@@skipcooled9884 ive been a bassist and singer for 30 years. Hemispheres isn’t hard on bass. The vocals definitely are hard. My point was he was young here. Yes he did record this song outside his comfortable range which geddy has admitted, but still, he was a young man here. It wasnt THAT difficult for him to go out there and play this song on a tour. They still werent that successful at this time. Geddy said in his book this band didnt start making real money until permanent waves. He said even during hemispheres all the money they made was going back into the band. Permanent waves finally got them some radio play. Thats when they started profiting. So even during hemispheres they were hungry to become successful. 2112 bought them creative freedom. It didnt buy them financial freedom. That motivated him every night. A 25yo many with a wife and a baby, it wasnt hard for him to get out there and play this every night. He had a purpose.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

Unbelievable, THANK YOU for posting this. This is the tour I wish the most I had seen. Moving Pictures was my 1st show, December 5, 1981. Hemispheres is my favorite Rush era. A Farewell to Kings inspired me to play bass 45 years ago and hearing Hemispheres transports me back to the time I spent endless hours learning it. It marks a very significant and meaningful time for me in the soundtrack of my life. Job well done and a sincere heartfelt thanks.

That is true, in a way. Spirit and Pictures were still great, but this ended the whole progressive mind tripping theme albums for Rush. Neil encoded the end of the NWO in 2112 (side one) ("we have assumed control" from the cosmic rival Kingdom), unto the [eternal] "farewell to [human] kings" [on Earth] as the outcome, so by Hemispheres (the planetary recovery) that cypher was complete for 2037. That's how the 2112, farewell and hemispheres trilogy ties the "duality" (spirit and physical) together.

@markskyscraper8092 3 жыл бұрын
@@mitchellbracey5234 First off the dates are all speculation. What is not speculation is that a global crisis cycle precedes the globalized form of world government. That is the "temples of Syrinx" parallel of [temporary] global authority which must be allowed to complete and rule for a very short time in the future. That is the period of the aftermath of the temporary future global crash sequence parallel in the Overture, "and the meek shall inherit the earth", where the evil priests of Syrinx claim the recovery from the crash is divine, which helps put them in final power for a short time. 2112 is what has the whole future sequence in clear logical form which will fit the same crash to recovery cycle of the future into world government. The principle is also in Revelation 13::3 where the "sword-stroke" is NOT "doomsday" but instead "heals" into global recovery and into world government which world government allotted rule is the Daniel 12:11 1290 days parallel. That is because the Cosmic Kingdom which arrives with "The Grand Finale" is very real and interested in saving as many people as possible and destroying Syrinx and its priests forever. Because religion is pretty much useless the final global awareness is formed over a time period where anyone will be able to choose which Kingdom they want to be with (Rev14::6-7), at a very open, positive, and peaceful arrival level. The "we have assumed control" cosmic powers will first offer peace, then conquer anything which wants to try to retain power over earth, hence the end of Syrinx new world order world government forever. I refer to some Judeo-Christian prophecy, not organized religion ideas. That is because this story is present in many ancient spiritual histories of planet Earth because it is a common story of the real future of man, not for one religion type to claim to be the end all answer when clearly NONE of them are. The final "we have assumed control" must be open freely to ANYONE who wants in, and that increases the scope of the life preservation objective which is what it truly is for the whole planet. All we await now is the global crisis cycle, to said world government, to completion of rule and into the basic 2112 storyline which will affect all people under that Syrinx rule of corruption in various ways for it is all based on lies. That leads to the Grand Finale eventually as it just proceeds as it has here for billions of years, ONE day at a time into the new future of the planet.

This was the only time i got to see rush in concert. Second row new haven coliseum, new haven Connecticut. Unfortunately we were directly in front of the PA, and it was LOUD! So i couldn't enjoy it much even at 17 stoned and all. Then, out of nowhere, my friend finds me from the front barriers at the end of the show working for security and gets me on stage, stage left...ironically, and i get to watch mr Peart do his solo from maybe...10-12 feet away. And it was AWSOME! After that, Geddy and Alex signed our hemispheres program and i was forever grateful to have had that experience to this day. Thank you RUSH!

Saw the 12-11-78 show in KC at Municipal Auditorium. A few days after The Who concert in Cincinnati where concert goers were killed in the crush of a GA show. KC was the same GA scheme too. I thought I was going to to die from being crushed to death. The people behind us at the back yelling "One, two, three, four, open up the f'n door' and then pushing their way forward. When they finally realized what in the hell was happening outside the arena they opened one door. I got pinned sideways between door frame and turnstile. My friend John somehow managed to free me and we ran like hell to the front of the arena. Ended up about 4th row. The flash bombs they set off were so freakin' intense. Burned my eyebrows and eye lashes and saw spots the rest of the night. My ears rang for at least two days. Ah the good old days!

It's very difficult to play such a complicated composition live. It is perfectly normal that in subsequent tours they resigned from individual parties "Hemispheres". It's completely normal. You can't blame them. There are such long songs that they did not play at all ("The Fountain of Lamneth"). It's good that they played a full set on the tour promoting this album.
@Ram44
@Ram44 5 жыл бұрын
@@SnowdogPL It is not a difficult piece to play live (I've played it for 25 years) - they simply shortened it to make room in the setlist for other songs. It's a repetitious piece of music and they felt it was a good compromise to shave a few minutes of it for the 1980 tour to make room for new long pieces Jacob's Ladder and Natural Science while keeping the back to back Cygnus X-1 songs in the set plus 2112 and Xanadu. That's a lot of long songs! Ironically the 2nd set of the R40 tour resembled a good chunk of the 1980 tour setlist. We are sure to get a full UK 1980 show multitrack with the 40th Anniversary Permanent Waves set in 2020 and will be the longest available version of Hemispheres that exists on a multitrack tape - so we'll have to enjoy it slightly shorter.

Its not that it was difficult to play. The legend goes, that they wrote the music FIRST! Then when Geddy started to sing it, he realized the key of side one was too high for him. Of course by this point it was too late, pre production, and all. Time is money. They had to muscle through the recording. This was a point in time where Geddy and Terry Brown were at serious odds. Geddy in one interview blames Terry for not saying anything about the vocals being out of range. The music is a masterpiece, and the tour great, but I have yet to hear a good vocal of Hemispheres side one live.

It IS true what they say about Canadians being nice. Geddy was even polite as he was telling the crowd to back up. ...LOL

I've just realised that you can hear a sample of the chirping Welsh sparrows from Rockfield Studios at the start of Xanadu like on the record- wonder how they did that! This is an amazing concert! Also, how insanely impressive is the live version of Hemispheres Book II? Staggering piece of work!

@Snowdog Where did you find this? Hemispheres is probably my favorite Rush album, even though I was only five years old when it came out. Believe it or not, I knew of a band in my hometown when I was in high school who could play Cygnus X-1 fairly flawlessly.
