Rush "Celebrate The Eve Of Big Wave" CD
Media: 1 CD
Time: 73:34
Catalog: Gypsy Eye GE-119
Source: Audience
Date: June 02, 1977
Location: Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England
NOTE: This was the second ever Rush performance outside the US and Canada. The first performance took place the day before in Sheffield. This is one of the first live shows where you can really hear significant use of keyboards in a lot of old songs. This show also features a pre-release version of "Xanadu". But my favorite part of this album is of course the live version of "The Necromancer". It's unfortunately not a complete show but it's worth it to listen.

I loved hearing the maestro phase shifter in Xanadu rather than the Boss CE-1 chorus pedal. I missed the sound of the phase shifter which Lifeson completely abandoned after 2112. Then in the solo he used an octave pedal... interesting.

I was there with my mate Pete, their first tour of the UK and outside of Canada and the US. I remember being blown away by them for a three piece so tight, and what a career ahead of them. Amazing band still listen to them.

Two things make this live recording great... 1) a portion of the Necromancer and 2) a pre-release version of Xanadu where Lifeson uses a Maestro Phase Shifter pedal and NOT a Boss CE=1 Chorus pedal. Why didn't he use the CE-1. Well, because it probably hadn't been released until later that month and he probably didn't even know it existed at the time. Sadly, Lifeson's Phase Shifter pedal never saw the light of day after this tour. Lifeson became addicted to Chorus until around Counterparts.

Geddy really did have a great voice back in the day. Screaming and smoking took its toll, but I love the way he sounded here, both at low and high volume.

very debatable lol. to us as hardcore rush fans, we love it, and yea his voice fell apart not even that long after this, but ive tried to throw on some old rush around others that dont love them like we do. they dont get it. they think he is the very worst singer in history. doesnt resonate with people like springsteen does or dave matthews or anyone like that. his 70s screaming voice is liked by our little crowd, thats it

I believe that even though Geddy lost his some of his range… He really raised his vocal game and became an even better singer in the later years

@@trenken I can't agree more. Most simply just don't get it...he was absolutely gifted back then with a near superhuman voice.

He's actually quoting "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott... An awesome piece of music that Alex would have heard on Warner Brothers cartoons if nowhere else. He obviously really wanted to do something with it and eventually came up with La Villa.

Man, I've had bootlegs that didn't come close to this quality. As a Rush fan since '75 (I was 5 and cousins let me borrow records), this is a real treat and a great find. I always wanted to hear Necromancer live. The upload is greatly appreciated.

Wow, a great sounding recording from a great live set. I love the touches of synth and the (real) percussion added to Lakeside Park, 2112, Necromancer etc...I never liked the sampled percussion sounds Neil used later, when the technology allowed.

In some live performances you hear a very slight tempo drag at times. Like half step slower. Some parts of some songs like their listening for each other

I’d love to have seen how Geddy worked in the keyboards in Lakeside Park (newly added, no doubt) playing the bass line WHILE playing the Moog part simultaneously. I can only figure it’s with pedals triggering the synth patching but he definitely is playing the melodic bass line, almost mirroring it on the Moog but they’re definitely different notes and phrases simultaneously.

What is The Eve Of Big Wave ?
@SnowdogPL
@SnowdogPL 5 жыл бұрын
This is directly related to the symbolic transition point for Rush (hence the term "eve"). They were progressing from a metal band to an art rock (though still heavy) band. The term "big wave" is a reference to the period of successes of Rush that followed the AFTK album.
