An amazing evening rush hour period spent at Stevenage station on the East Coast Mainline where we see countless services from London Northeastern Railway, Grand Central, Hull Trains, Great Northern and Thameslink.
I actually thought there would be more to tell about Stevenage but it actually hasn't got as much of a varied history as I first thought. This isn't the first station to be built here though. The current station was built and opened by British Rail in 1973.
The first station was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1850, the station was first met with a lot of hostility by some of the local coach companies in the city at the time as it would take away the business from them which it eventually did as getting around by train was significantly quicker that going via horse around the country.
The station was a simple design and in all honesty hasn't really change now, the station then had 4 platforms if my memory serves me right and when the station was closed in the mid 1900's it was moved 1.4km south from it's old location to where it is located now, this is because in the 1940's the government at the time declared that Stevenage would be one of the first towns in the UK to be given 'New Town' status. This was actually done because they were looking at ways of building new towns around a 50 mile radius of London once WW2 had finished. There were 500,000 people within inner London that the government were trying to target to get into these new towns because of the amount of damage to houses and other buildings during the blitz of the war.
What this 'New 'Town' meant that was Stevenage was to be given a new town centre which is why when you are passing through the city you can see signs leading you to the 'old town'. Because if the fact that a new city centre was to be built they also thought it would be better if they built a new railway station that was also closer to the town centre to make it more financially viable which it ultimately was.
So eventually the new station was opened in 1973 and albeit from a few small modernisation changes it really hasn't changed all that much.
Joining me today was Richard Chalklin so please do check out his channel as he has some incredible content for you all to watch.
My next station will be Stratford Regional on the Great Eastern Mainline.
You can now find me on Facebook through the group Tornado922, there you will find regular updates, videos and photos from all of my goings throughout 2019.

Some pretty deep history still. So it pretty turned and grew so much as a resettlement City for Veterans and those left without homes after the Raids, maybe even a Construction Hub. Quite the honorable feat, circumstances aside. I feel for the coach drivers, but at the time they became the first Inner-city Cabbies (Darker bright-side) Anyway on to the film, stretching the batteries yeah... Happy Hour is more like it! Habit all the way, I thought you might have to hold that fence at times, Ladies were fast. Seemed like a great day for it too. LNER 43's and 82's I love the look, workhorses. I also dug the 313's & 365's (hope I got it right) In truth, you make it easy for a know-nothing like me to catch on somewhat quickly. Thanks! I've seen you under pressure with such fast-paced traffic, but I have to say you handled this like it was no bother, almost machine like. I still think you deserve a proper T.V. slot (Travelling Spotter??) you have a knack for catching enough footage and being verbally savvy to carry the lull, just sayin'! Anyways brilliant film, feature length and all with "Through the Gap" @42:30 awesome work. Top Shelf! B.P.

I guess when you look at what the railways have done for this country you can comfortably say that have done so much good for communities and businesses everywhere, even if at the time it looked like they were going to overtake everything and put people out of a job. This was an incredible evening spent here and there was so much going at times it was hard to try and keep track of everything! I have often thought about approaching various TV companies and seeing if they would be interested in doing some sort of programme, Maybe one day that will happen!
