After hearing/watching Rush perform YYZ, Working Man and now Natural Science live it’s become pretty clear Rush is without question one of the greatest live Rock bands of all time if not they best. They have one of the most unique, energetic, melodic, joyful, technical sounds we’ve ever heard. The thing I’ve started noticing within these past 3 songs is they have an incredible ability to wander off into these sections were they’re just jamming out in an improve like fashion filled with these proggy, Jazz fusion, groovy, energetic melodic sections were every member - Geddy Lee, Neil Peart & Alex Lifeson take turns crushing their instruments in a truly stunning fashion. And We are also starting to realize why Neil Peart is held in such high regard as one of the GOATS behind the kit if not they GOAT in rock drumming history. His style is not just obviously technical and precise but they instantly get you moving and head bobbing. They’re so catchy and groovy just instant goosebumps. Someone mention Neil is one Danny Careys “Tool” biggest influences and after hearing Neil behind the kit on these past three songs it’s pretty clear. This has been an unbelievable trio of a ride and can’t wait to continue this journey as we are on our way to becoming full blown Rush Heads. GAME OVER

As a fan since 1980 it's always been more of a word of mouth band that built a huge cult following. They added the heavy into Prog rock of the day in the 70s. Welcome to the family. Two live ones I recommend is Anthem from a rough 1976 film in black and white that shows their youthful fire. And if the road gets to it Jacobs Ladder on R40 their final tour a song they hadn't played in 35 years on their final tour. They make great book ends on early and the end of their tours. Great weekend to the both of you. Always great reactions and your feel of music is top notch

FREEWILL from Exit Stage Left is greatness. The lead break is the most wonderful 60 seconds of full out controlled kaos jam your ears could ever be lucky enough to hear. All 3 doing their own thing in unison and then Geddy taking it home with the vocals sure bliss! You should treat yourself to that.. Peace out...

I forget what tour it was, but I went to the Tweeter Center in Camden early in the afternoon to buy a single ticket for Rush that evening. Waited a few hours for the box office to open. Paid the lady for my ticket and got my ticket. It felt kinda thick, and it was two tickets stuck together. I IMMEDIATELY said "Umm, ma'am, you gave two tickets by mistake. I only paid for one." I put the extra ticket under the ticket window without even thinking that I could have sold it. She said "Oh! Thank you very much!" During the show, they played Natural Science. I always thought that I would never see Rush perform that phenominal song live. What a huge surprise that was. When the 3rd verse came around, I was blown away, remembering what happened at the ticket window. "I will survive annihilation." I took that as a promise from God through Geddys lips, even though Geddy is an atheist. Amazing grace.

I think Different Stages which this is off of is the better live release. For one it has 2112 in its entirety plus I fuckin love how they go off at the end of Closer To the Heart and they go off on that instrumental.....EPIC.......EPIC........EPIC!!! then of course Peart's drum solo never sounded so crisp and clear to which he was known for already! But on Different Stages which is the Test For Echo tour 96/97 you can hear his growth from when he went to Freddie Gruber that jazz drummer who taught him that swinging/circular motion style which really made it fun to watch him sticking those awesome stick patterns that only he could play

After decades still one of my fave Rush songs, so perfectly RUSH! Always contemplate this track when I go outdoors and am able to let go and meditate on planet Earth, humanity, the universe; we are here for a very fleeting time, we should try and pay attention to as many moments as possible. All the members of Rush started playing instruments at the age of 13. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson met when they were 13 in junior high school and started playing together at around 16 when Alex formed the band with John Rutsy who was the drummer at that time. When they got their first record deal in 1974 they were going to start touring. John Rutsy has health issues and couldn't tour. Neil was asked to audition and the rest as they say is history. Three life long friends who were brilliant musicians. Other Songs Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Caravan from the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland Where's my thing/Here it is live in Dallas Cheers

yeah, always love the way Ged and Lerxt are clearly haivng as much fun as the crowd. Their pre-show vids and stage props just show a band who are having fun whilst being totaly amazing which adds to their fans experience. Much as I love most of their contemporaries I think they always played it a bit too seriously but ironically these guys were the best of them all.

John actually was the drummer for their first album, the eponymous _Rush._ He wanted them to be more glam, while Alex and Geddy were more into Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Then "Working Man" hit big in the US, they were faced with longer tours, and between his diabetes (which used to be harder to manage back then) and incipient alcoholism, John didn't think he could handle it, so he left. Reportedly he stayed friends with the guys after that, though.

Rush is a great live band. I saw them 27 times live between 1984 and 2015. Their music evolved over time but their musicianship was always there, front and center. They did an amazing tour in 2011 - Time Machine, Live in Cleveland. Your Working Man reaction was from that show (Working Man was the last song of the encore, they had been playing for almost 3 hours straight at that point and they were in their late '50's, if you needed to add anything to that performance). It was the 30th Anniversary of their biggest selling album, Moving Pictures so the middle of the show was that entire album, in order! It was epic. Other notables from that show are Freewill, Marathon and something that hadn't been released on an album at the point of that tour, Caravan. Please put all 3 on your list. I would add Analog Kid (from Dallas? in 2013 or 2015?) and if you want to hear something ridiculous go back in time to 1976 and listen to By-Tor and the Snowdog from All The World's a Stage when they were in their early 20's.

Intro guitar tone is a piezo “acoustic” pickup integrated into a PRS CE24. Btw, what a weird poppy snare tone… I love Neil’s classic dry snare tone.
@obelisk21
@obelisk21 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Alex has a very unique guitar setup in that he has two outputs on the body of the guitar so he can run the piezo pickups through a different signal chain on his soundboard from the primary pickups. He even sometimes plays with both the piezo and primary pickups active so it sounds like he has acoustic accompaniment.

One of the last performances of Rush 1.0 (as Geddy Lee would call it). This is during the TFE tour, before the tragedies that befell Neil Peart. At this point in time, he had done a substantial amount of work w/ Freddie Gruber, regarding economy of movement, etc. For me, this was the very height of his abilities. When Rush returned in 2002, Peart had to virtually re-learn the drums. He was clearly a different drummer from what he was in Rush 1.0. He was still every bit as agile, but a bit more heavy handed. I think this video captures some of that last Rush 1.0 magic.

The truth is, none of that was improvised. If you listen to the original album they are playing pretty close to the original except for an occasional funny start, like Working Man as a polka. Every song was written to be played live just as it was recorded. Geddy Lee sang lead while playing bass, keyboard along with key peddles and bass peddles depending on which instrument he was playing with his hands and on several songs he added his double-neckand bass/6-string where he plays rhythm guitar. Alex played lead guitar, 12 string and other stringed instruments, foot peddles, back up vocals and occasional keyboards. Neil played multiple drum kits all around him along with a full percussion kit.

Great reaction! Rush crushed every performance. 3 GOATS on stage at one time pulling off incredible time signatures all the while keeping it musical and relatable. Neil and Geddy have a lot of (well deserved) notoriety, but Alex is sometimes overlooked and underrated despite his mastery level of playing. The live version is great, but the studio version is a masterpiece.

You have to watch the intro they play in the “live in Rio” and “YYZ live in Rio” or maybe you already did I’m gonna checkout your channel. It’s just crazy how that young South American crowd found out about Rush is through the internet. Goes to show how this Toronto band has rocked the soul of millions of fan with their lyrics and the way they handle their instruments. They will be missed I know I do ever since they retired and drummer Neil’s death. Btw he wrote most of their songs, very deep lyrics the dude did not have it easy with the tragic death of his wife and child, may his soul rest in peace. He contributed to goodness and served a purpose for the human race.

Great reaction! This is my personal favorite. You guysdidnt even get into the lyrics, but these can definitely make you mind explode. Its a journey through the life of man and through the earth. Its incredibly deep. Any live performance will not disappoint because they brought the "A" game every night. Rush was very much a touring band and how they breath for fan base. Toured 10 months out of the year for a straight 20 years. Took 5 or 6 years off (Neil lost his daughter tragically, and then lost his wife within the year to cancer) and continued to tour every year and a half of so until 2015. Neil retired after the 2015 tour and sadly passed away in 2020 to a rare brain cancer. 😞 Again anything live will probably be more than you would expect.. But I'd recommend Xanadu from Exit Stage Left, One Little Victory from Rio, and Headlong Flight from R40. R40 is from their 40th anniversary tour. So their final tour. They were still in their prime.

"La Villa Strangiato", "Heresy", "Manhattan Project", "Mission", "The Pass", "Bravado", "Time Stand Still", "Jacob's Ladder". I could go on and on, and I'm sure others will have other suggestions, but these are a few of my (many) favorites from this incredible band!

There is only one other group I've ever heard that could pull of incredible time changes at the speed and consistently as RUSH...THE MIGHTY OPETH as you put it. Wait until Xanadu. Greatest drummer with the most air drummers in one spot, that's a good reason why he was the greatest. RIP the mighty Neil Peart!!

They are truly masters of their craft....check out some of their work from their final recordings. May I suggest Malignant Narcissism (live Snakes and Arrows) for a great jam session and The Garden (live version of course). Thanks for a great review!!!

They have been playing together since they were kids. At least Alex & Geddy, have. They met, & became friends in Jr. high. They were playing gigs at about 16 yrs old.

Love your Rush reactions. Love the excitement and energy, along with your physical set up...it's pleasant to on the eyes and ears. Great job, you two. After YYX, Working Man and now Natural Science (my personal favorite song), I am absolutely certain that your feed will be overflowing with Xanadu - Exit State Left tour requests. Let me add one more...Xanadu - Exit Stage Left tour, please. They are a bit younger and it's so good, it's almost shocking that it's a live performance. But then, if you listened to the Natural Science recording, you'd say the same about this one. Best Live band evahhhh!
