This is an interview with Neil Peart from 1987 during the Hold Your Fire tour. No further details about this interview recording are known, but is suspected to be dated December 9 from a radio station in Uniondale, New York.

Some people don’t like this album but a true rush fan loves all the albums like kids some are closer to you than others but they all hold a certain time in our lives that when heard makes you think of that time and for me these feelings were always good even if the times were bad there music took the edge off it ! RIP NEIL there will never be another drummer as interesting to listen to

Lol not liking every single album doesnt make you a fake rush fan 😂. Ive been a diehard fan since i was like 12 and i dont really like stuff like test for echo, clockwork angels and a couple others, and thats ok. At this time rush stopped being a hard rock band and really became a pretty light rock band. Hard to even find some properly distorted guitars on some of these mid catalog albums. Plus geddy was playing that stupid twangy wal bass that had no balls or bottom end to it. They didnt start sounding like a rock band again until counterparts which itself had a handful of crap songs on it.

@@trenken Rush in the 80s was an interesting experiment. I like a lot of that stuff but man, the 70s more proggy era just kicked ass. It's a shame in some ways that they went away from that but then nobody was making 70s type prog in the 80s so I guess it was not surprising that they changed their sound. I agree with you about not liking some albums. Some folks think you need to like everything in order to be a "true" fan, whatever the hell true fan means. It's okay not to like something.

@@ghendar honestly rush has always been followers. Everything they did, others had already been doing before them. Prog bands like King crimson and yes and others came before rush. In the 80s, stuff like talking heads and the police, then rush switched to that style. In the 90s nirvana, pearl jam and soundgarden came out, suddenly rush does counterparts and test for echo. So they really were followers and reflected what was going on around them. Im not saying that was a bad thing. It was smart of them to stay relevant and not sound like some dated 70s classic rock act. So thats why they changed. They were just trying to stay relevant and reflect the times.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! He did have input on the songs musically though which geddy has confirmed multiple times. Sometimes geddy and alex would work on a part that neil doesnt love or suggests changes and sometimes it would be changed, or he would have ideas about how to better arrange something that the other 2 put together, so he wasnt totally detached from the construction of the songs musically.
