One my favorite Rush songs. When I was young, I joined the Air Force and was stationed in Spain ( Torrejón Air Base), and I would take out one of my albums, often Rush, put it on the turn table, crank up the volume on my Kenwood Super-Eleven receiver, and my big ol' pioneer cabinet type speakers would this for all to hear. This was 1980-1982. Damn. It feels like a lifetime ago.

"The song describes a future in which many classes of vehicles have been prohibited by "the Motor Law". ... The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road and Track magazine Yep...The car sound was done by Geddy. The bass lines in this song are amazing. They are melodic and not just keeping rhythm. Peart on the drums is a percussionist and adds dimensions to the music, not just keeping the beat. Alex as always is a monster on the guitar and everything just fits perfectly. Whenever I hear this song, I just want to go on a long drive in my convertible to anywhere. :)

Along with the constraints mentioned by Connor, mainstream FM classic radio is to blame. They wouldn't know a deep track if it bit them on the ass. Those who do are forbidden to play them since deep tracks aren't on the approved list. For that reason it is the responsibility of those of us who know our shit to pass our knowledge on to the youth that truly love the history of the music that we lived.

Another Rush fan has been born! It's just too bad that they've retired as a band, I'm sure that you would have loved to see them live. Take it from me, it was definitely a great experience! At least there's plenty of live performance videos of them for you to enjoy. You're obviously a true music appreciator, and Rush has given us 40 years of awesome material to appreciate, that's for sure! This is one of my favorite Rush songs, it's a great storytelling song, and the music and lyrics take you on a journey through a futuristic time where gasoline powered vehicles have been outlawed by the government. It's rebellious, glorious, and completely paints a picture in your mind. That's a hallmark of great writing, and something that seems to be lost in today's music. So glad you are enjoying this legendary band! It's been a blast taking the journey along with you! And yes... that's instruments creating the sound of the car engine accelerating, Geddy's synthesizer to be exact! As always, Peace and love from Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A!

The song is about a young man who lives in a time when combustion engine automobiles have been outlawed. His Uncle has a house outside the city where he hides a Red Barchetta which is a nickname for Enzo Ferrari's Little Red Boat, the 1948 Ferrari 166MM. A small two seat race car with a tiny 1.5 liter V12 engine. In his time it is a crime to own and operate a car like this. The young man being born out of his time.

This song always reminds me of this young woman named Alissa from Arizona I used to talk to years ago. She was and probably still is a huge Rush fan and we used to both exchange mix tapes. I didn’t really get Rush then, but a few years later I rediscovered their music and today I love them. Alissa and I lost touch long ago, but I always think of her whenever I hear a Rush song. Alissa, if you ever read this, THANK YOU. 🙏

It was a fine morning in March 1982. The warm weather and clear sky gave promise of an early spring. Buzz had arisen early that morning, impatiently eaten breakfast and gone to the garage. Opening the door, he saw the sunshine bounce off the gleaming hood of his 15-year-old MGB roadster. After carefully checking the fluid levels, tire pressures and ignition wires, Buzz slid behind the wheel and cranked the engine, which immediately fired to life. He thought happily of the next few hours he would spend with the car, but his happiness was clouded - it was not as easy as it used to be.

JaDem I’ve always hated that Alex never really gets the credit he deserves as a guitarist. Don’t get me wrong I love Geddy and Neil but they’re always put on a pedestal when compared to Alex when I totally believe Alex is on the same level as both in terms of technical ability. Alex is the Guitarist that got me to pick up a guitar and start learning to play.

Such an awesome song! Barchetta is a vintage Ferrari. Such a cool story. It's actually an old car stored in his uncle's barn in the future when driving cars is illegal, takes it for a joy ride and gets chased by the law before eluding them and returning the car safely to his uncle's barn. The sound of the Barchetta taking off was definitely Alex Lifeson's guitar. Epic.

First, Thank you for your posts. I don't subscribe to many. I enjoy your channel very much. I was hoping you'd covered this amazing song. Anyways... I was literally on a back wood, country road in Michigan with ZERO radio reception when all of a sudden this song came through crystal clear. In the back seat, sat my then 6 year old daughter. She said, "Rush! Crank it dad!" We'd tragically lost her mother two years earlier. Her mom and I were both huge Rush fans. I still get goosebumps when I hear this. God Bless you, April. We miss you. Thanks for keeping an eye on us.

New subscriber. I think you would be doing yourself a service by looking into Ronnie James Dio. He will probably be on any shortlist for greatest 70’s-80’s metal lead-singer. I’m pretty stunned you haven’t checked his stuff out yet. Part of his legend was his short stature. He was 5’4 but he had an IMMENSELY powerful voice. He headlined several iconic metal bands so the list I have for you will have different band names. I do believe you aught to listen and react to his work. Here are my suggestions: “The Last In Line” - Dio “Stargazer” - Rainbow “Holy Diver” - Dio “Stand Up And Shout” - Dio “Gates Of Babylon” - Rainbow His music videos can be pretty distracting. I would advise just watching the videos that are only an image of the album cover. Live Performance: “Dio - Rainbow In The Dark (Live The Spectrum 1984)”
