This is the song that put Rush on the musical map. It all started when Donna Halper, former music director for radio station WMMS in Cleveland, brought in a copy of their debut album and played it while she went for a bathroom break; Cleveland was mainly a factory town in the 1970s, so the lyrics instantly resonated with the listeners, and then they caught the attention of Mercury Records, who signed them to their first record deal. The reggae bit at the beginning here was a nod to The Police, a British band that partly influenced their early 1980s music; if you'd like to hear more of that, I recommend Vital Signs from this same show, Distant Early Warning and New World Man from Live In Rio, and Digital Man from the Snakes And Arrows Tour. What genre is Rush? It's Rush. Rush had a 45 year career and they changed their sound through the years but always sounded like Rush. They started out as heavy rock ( listen to the studio version of this song ) Working Man came out on their first album in 1974 and it was a hit in Cleveland thanks to Donna Halper a DJ at the time. After performing this song for decades they changed it up a bit. I had the sad experience of living in Hawaii. I was there 3 1/2 years and that was 3 years 5 months too long. Needless to say, NOT an 808 fan. The only thing that kept me sane was a nearby nightclub that had live music every Friday and Saturday nights. There was a band that played this song and nailed it. I requested it every time I went there. So, when they came in and saw me, they KNEW they were going to be "Workin' Men". RUP Neil.😇 I appreciate what they're doing here but I'm not really high on the reggae kickoff.
