Working Man is off their first album and it sounds different than this. Both are excellent. Cleveland has a special place in their hearts as it was a Disc jockey from there that played this song and yes especially back In the 70's it was a working class town. This lead them to getting their first recording contract. The guys are pushing 60 here and this was at the end of a three hour show. Phenomenal! 🔥

48 year lifelong favorite band RUSH fanatic. My girlfriend gave me their self-titled debut immediately after it was released in the US in June 1974. I was 13. I still have it. Already heavy into all the music that would later be called "Classic Rock." the instant that stylus contacted vinyl I was hooked for life. Saw them in January of 1977 on their ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE tour and February 1980 on their PERMANENT WAVES tour. The 77 show I was front row center with arms on stage. In the 70's their were no space barricades between fans & stage. The crowd was pressed against the stage. All arena shows were general admission until The Who in Cincinnati horror in December of 79. You arrive HOURS early and run for your life to attain the only spot to watch a show; FRONT ROW CENTER ARMS ON STAGE. It was a GLORIOUS decade to be a teenager.

Cleveland pretty much gave them their start. A DJ named Donna Halper played this for her call to nature break since it was a long song. Pretty soon people were calling the station asking the name of the new Led Zeppelin song🤣 These guys never forget the people who helped them along the way. They're still friends with the DJ and know if it wasn't for Cleveland. Who knows where they'd be? Take care ✌

Rush always had a tight relationship with the industrial cities along the Great Lakes. I grew up in one of those, and long before blue jeans and flannel shirts were the de rigueur attire for grunge acolytes, that was our uniform. And Rush provided the soundtrack of our lives. When Lee says to Cleveland that they're the "best audience ever", that's because outside of Toronto, it was in Cleveland that they had some of their strongest support. For over 40 years. Another ting hat needs to be understood about Rush is that the members of the band were truly friends, and for them it was as much a pleasure to play for each other as it was to play for an audience. So, the joy you see in their faces is genuine.

You guys absolutely nailed it with your observation about their affinity and relatability to the working-class Ohio radio was the first United States region to play the first Rush album album back in 1974. And Rush of always acknowledged that that was their Gateway into the career they had that expanded around the world eventually. They are definitely guys who work their way up playing shity clubs for years and years and perfecting their craft. Alex and Getty the guitarist and bassist vocalist respectively have been friends since they were in middle school so the joy you see between the two of them interacting is 1000% rooted in all that history plus this drummer, Neil Peart, had been with them since 1975. Unlike zillion rock band to get out there and fake it, pretending they actually can tolerate each other... to collect a paycheck while playing half-hearted versions of their radio hits at that. It's definitely not Rush's approach. So glad that you guys enjoyed it, this is my first time seeing your reaction Channel and I'm definitely enjoying your energy and enthusiasm. Subscribed.

A little more perspective on the song: it’s written about Alex’s dad. Alex’s parents were emigres to Canada from Yugoslavia at the end of WWII. Alex’s real last name isn’t Lifeson - that’s a stage name adapted from his real name of Zivojinovich (which I think means roughly “Son of Life”). Alex’s dad was a plumber and handyman that worked 2 and 3 jobs all the time. When they say “get up at 7 and go to work at 9” they could have been thinking about how Alex’s dad might come home at 5, grab a nap til 7pm and then go to a second job at 9pm. That’s the kind of things he did for his family. Even more amazing is how they supported Alex in his musical pursuits because they saw he was a youth prodigy on the guitar. But that’s another story. ✌🏼

A Cleveland DJ gave Rush their first air play in the United States when she needed a sufficiently long song for a bathroom break. So she saw this new thing, it was long, she put it on. When she got back she said her phones were absolutely lighting up demanding to know when the new Zepelin was coming out. That's how Rush got big. So they have a VERY soft spot for Cleveland. And yeah, that is very much a working class town. As for the song they love to just let Alex go a little nuts in the middle of it because it lends itself well to improvisation. This time, they pulled out all the stops and basically gave us 3 solos at the same time because all three of them were going insane and shredding their instruments. Keep in mind these guys are in their 50s at this point, and this is after already playing for 3 solid hours. RUSH is very much a working class band. They used to tour something like 280 days out of the year, year after year. These guys absolutely do this because they love doing it. They love their music. They love the fans. They love playing. And the fans love them all the more for it, so you get this insane energy feedback loop between them on stage and the crowd. There are people who essentially toured with the band and have been to hundreds of shows over their 4 decades of touring. Rush is also really pure. Never a scandal. No sex, drugs, etc. Just three guys who are best friends who are absolute gods at their instruments. They are incredibly humble. None of them have any ego about it. I've seen many concerts in my days from many genres of music. But nothing has even come close to comparing to seeing Rush live. It just feels so different.

While the band had a hard working ethic when on tour, it should be noted that they did partake in some drug use. Exhibit A: "Train to Bangkok."

@@kivimik Oh, absolutely. In later years as Alex's arthritis got worse he was frequently at the very least moderately high during the show. They aren't saints or anything, but they weren't out snorting cocaine or anything.

Saw them in Rochester my first concert. Then in Syracuse. Their first live album I use to listen all the time. One of the best albums ever.

This is not the original version the Reggae was extra for the concert, all of their fathers were Blue collar workers in the Toronto area , The Guitar player father was Serbian , The singer Bass player parents were survivors of the German Death camps

The entire song evolved quite a bit in 40 years, it's structured completely differently in this vid vs then. For the better I would add.

The crowd going crazy like that can be explained with 4 letters....Ohio, and add to that Cleveland, they are one of the best crowds in the world, the recording is proof - only Rio could take it up a level from that!! The place where they got their break!!

Great reaction. I highly recommend that you react to Rush, Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left video. It was Rush at its finest in the early 80's. Thanks!
