Up-and-coming Australian madman Russell Bierke is tackling the world one crazy wave at a time. You might remember him as the precocious 18-year-old who won Cape Fear in 2016. The son of Hawaiian big wave surfer Kirk Bierke, Russell never had a choice, from a young age it was always charge hard or charge home, and that's just what he's done. Growing up on Australia's South Coast meant growing up on a diet of raw ocean energy, the Pacific endlessly broadsiding his hometown of Ulladulla and its plethora of shallow reef slabs and deep water bombies with swell...and it doesn't get much gnarlier than a big 'ol day at his local shallow reef slab Shipstern Bluff. Click play and watch Bierke battle a massive day at Shippies.

A comment on another post called this wave “a water demon, something alive that responds to it’s rider in real time with bad intentions.” I really don’t think there’s a better way to describe this behemoth.

I would say the Right and Cyclops comes first and second before Shippys which comes in at number 3 just for fear and raw power. Put the Right and cyclops in either order they tie for fear factor.

@@jashannon Dead right. A double hold down on an 8 foot day on a beach break can make you really think about who is in charge here. Respect the Ocean. Being dragged across an exposed reef on a wipeout could be nasty unless you have a full length wet suit . Losing skin and flesh on rocks is not fun. Breaking ribs and bones such as my nose happens and is part of the rite of passge!
