First off, I love that Walters axe. They are hard to find and definitely high quality. As an American, I grew up on Buck knives and have many of them in my collection. My mother is Canadian however, and she gave me a beautiful Grohman #1 for Christmas this year. It’s an excellent knife, and I couldn’t be happier with it. Unfortunately I didn’t get to use it during deer season, but hope to this fall. I didn’t know much about the company, so I started reading and they have a great history. As an American, with Canadian roots, I am glad to see such a high quality knife made by a family run company.

Thanks for sharing your story. Walters Axes came into production in the 1850's, I believe, Walters was from Yorkshire in England. Their axes were good quality, especially the Black Diamond line.Sadly there are few axe foundries in Canada today, with the exception of more recent, small 'boutique' quality axes. Russell Grohmann is one of the only larger scale, well established, knife manufacturers. The Russell Grohmann Knives have been copied by many other knife makers, a trait that is often seen as 'the greatest form of flattery'. I believe their strength in the market is the unique design, which is well thought through. They commanded respect from the Canadian Military and hunters and explorers in many continents, a touch of the old world surviving in modern times. Best Wishes, WS.

Only thing I don’t like about some Grohmann sheaths are the rivers at the end. They can dull the last bit of your blade. I drill mine out. When I’m out in the bush or the arctic, for work or pleasure, the #4 is usually the one on me. Can’t wait to try mine on moose and bison sometime. I have the #’s 1, 2, 3, 4, and 104 Mini Skinner and the 350 and 340 folders, all in stainless. The wife has their paring knife and ulu. All excellent knives, made in the same province I was! Thanks for your comments! The ergonomics of this knife are different to the regular 'Woodlore' type or the puukko, it feels good in the hand, but for MY hands, the neck close to the blade should be a bit thicker. That said I really like the overall design and respect its heritage and great value for money. take care, WS

The grohmann #3 is a near magical knife. My grandfather had a hunting buddy that carried one his whole adult life. He found it in northern Wisconsin on the shores of Lake superior. He'd always say "them damn Canadians, bunch of cowards and frenchman, sure make a fine knife though." He had to of dressed over 1000 deer with it and cleaned a fair amount of fish as well. Before he died, he willed it to me. I put it up and bought my own #3 that I've been using in conjunction with my vintage mora. It is a fantastic knife that is really, really versatile.

I bought a #4 with micarta scales, stainless sabre grind, and a full flap (military style) sheath about two years ago. Haven't had the opportunity to use it much, but it has great ergonomics. I've had a #100 Large Skinner (stainless, rosewood) for a few years, and it's about the best all round hunting knife design I've come across. My father gave me an original #1 in carbon steel he'd acquired in the early 1970s. The only Grohmann I don't have, that I'd like to have, is the #3 Military; I may eventually get one, just to support the company. Knife Store Canada is definitely the place to go for Grohmann. Best selection & prices I've found.

I hope the mailman soon delivers the other sheath for the Grohmann. We self isolate on our property and see no none for days, hopefully all will pass soon and the Covid-19 will be behind us. @redcanoe142 жыл бұрын
Greetings Yurih, thanks for visiting my channel. Many of these types of axe are 2.25 to 2.5lbs and hung on handles between 24" and 26". I have experimented a lot with different combinations of head weight and shaft length of axes to better understand the physics of them. What weight of head is the Russian Axe you use? I sometimes use my late fathers axe, it has a 4lb 'Kent Pattern' head and a short haft, It cuts well and reminds me of the heavier Russian Axed even though the pattern in very different. I have lived in this environment for 4 years, almost 3 of those years in a camping trailer through 2 winters with a lot of snow (up to 4 feet) and low temperatures (down to -36C), no running water or sanitation. So I think you will understand why I am keen to finish building my house. I look forward to seeing more of your videos, WS.

Greetings Dave! We are just getting rid of the last of the snow here, I haven't seen the swallows yet, when I lived in England we always saw Swallows on Good Friday. I would like to know where you got that big knife you own from (did you call it the mystery knife?). I make a few knives and for bushcrafting 4" works very well, but I have a few leuku's as well, they are good for shaving down fine kindling. Over all I am quite string and fit, though I did rear my Trapezius muscle twice last summer and that was some level of pain! I may film Part 2 today, though they are warning we may get thunderstorms ...we will see. Good Luck, Stay Safe, Chris

@@redcanoe14 Well, lets see here,...The Steel (65Mn) a medium carbon steel, while not being very hard, is tough and capable of taking some abuse...holds an edge for a reasonable time while in use....When regularly maintained is easily brought back to a fine edge...a real good chopper....inexpensive. On the downside, the handle is a textured rubber and will rub the uninitiated hand raw in short order...But the handle is easily removed with two screws and the tang (while hidden) is very generous. Its application/function would better suite the survivalist more than the woodsman...i differentiate between the two ...Much like your Skrama , its not an axe, nor is it a fine carver...it takes that middle ground and holds it very well...hope that helps amigo!
@redcanoe144 жыл бұрын
@@MTwoodsrunnerPrimitiveSkill That is, as I would expect, a great answer Dave from a man of experience and wisdom. I cringe when I hear the words 'tactical' and 'survival' attached to anything, too often they are pretty much useless for doing anything useful with finesse and seem to be more like marketing logos to sell to the weekend warriors and 'basement commando' tough guys. As you can imagine I cut up and modify stuff trying to get the best performance out of it. I have perhaps 6 'big knives' (over 6") that I rarely use in the environment I live in, one I made, three are old Sami Leukus (having Sami blood way back I hold on to them), I am sure the original owners found them very useful in their environments. I also have a very old, heavy, Sheffield, England forged butcher knife made close to where my dad was born. One day I might give them a workout against the smaller knives? I hope this Pandemic threat soon leaves us all and we come out healthy and wiser. ATB for now Amigo, Chris

It is a reproduction of a Finnish Military M36 hat made by Sarma and sold by Varusteleka a military surplus store in Finland. You are correct, the design was inspired by a German Military cap that was popular in WW1. I have a #4 in stainless and it won’t hold an edge. I even convexed it hoping that would help, but to no avail. It’s great on food and meat but terrible on hardwoods. So disappointed.
@redcanoe143 жыл бұрын
To be honest I have rarely had luck with any stainless steel knives, perhaps with the exception of Moras. If you convex an edge I would just suggest a hard edge stropping in leather, rather than a workout on a grindstone. Personally I would always choose a carbon steel and keep it cleaned after use.
@shawnwells57193 жыл бұрын
Both my #4 and #100 hold an edge as well as any other mid range knife I own, including my #1 carbon. Grohmann puts a great bevel on them that can be honed quickly with ceramic rods. If I had a stainless Grohmann that would hold an edge, I'd send it back to them for evaluation. Maybe it came from a batch of steel that wasn't heat treated properly. If so, I'm sure they'd replace it under warranty.
@monkeylovemagic33393 жыл бұрын
Check out the Knives Of Alaska- Yukon #2, it's a modernized take on canadian belt style in D2 steel. Can't say enough about it, D2 is so hard it holds an edge a long time, and has a much more ergonomic handle. That being said this basic design wasn't really meant for woodwork, although this larger #4 is marketed as "survival." It's a skinning/game processing style blade. However, this KOA Yukon will hold an edge on hardwoods if you're wanting a one tool option for the bush.
