No actual Japanese people ride them. They are a well known tourist attraction and the local Japanese population actually find them really annoying. I seem to remember they were involved in a lawsuit from Nintendo for using the copyrighted characters without permission and they ended up going bust last year or the year before.

I agree that, as a westerner, there is a touch of "uncanny valley" creepiness to the cute of the maid cafes. But I also think that it's not necessarily creepy or exploitative to a Japanese person, or at least, if it is, it's in a different way. I think you can probably make a case that the modern "maid cafe" is different to geisha tea-houses more in style, price point (and training, but that's at least a subset of the others) than it is in terms of type of service industry: look-but-don't-touch entertainment, with refreshments. In the west, we have escape rooms that would surely read as creepy and troubled to other cultures, but to (many/most) us, they're harmless. And like the above example, you can probably draw a thematic line between haunted houses, or funhouse mirrors. None of that is to say that people aren't exploited or that nobody is going for fetishistic reasons. Also, I think as a society we really need to get over the anti-furry thing. I mean, first of all, let's try to stop looking down on people, just, in general. Furries don't all have sex in their costumes, and if there is a part of themselves a person can only express with a mask on, I think we should try to meet that with kindness. For the furries who do have sex in custom or persona -- unless they're having it with you, what does it matter? Life is hard enough without creating extra caste systems. Finally, two thoughts. I, like many women my age, thought the Beast was more handsome than Prince Adam. Further, men and women both (who are not furries) that I've known have told me their "first crush" was on Disney's animated Robin or Maid Marion in Robin Hood. You don't have to be a furry to empathize an anthropomorphized animal. Humans do it all the time. Final finally? Batman is a furry. So let's all just wash off the second-hand shame and let other people be whomever they are.

They are celebrating their 10th year together and played the first concert of their 10th year on the 9th Jan at Tokyo Garden Theater. I flew out from the UK (Scotland ) to be there. So while here I had to visit her former place of work and where it all started. The cafe also appears in one of the band MV's... "After Life".

I have so many issues with this. As someone who works in a maid cafe, I can tell you it was portrayed as something that it isn’t. It’s not a honeypot, the clientele are not all male, and they’re not French maids. They’re supposed to represent the kind of maid one would have if they lived inside an anime, where everything is pastel and cute. The maid thing is to enable the customer to live the fantasy that they’re rich and literally have their own maids. It’s an experience for someone who loves Kawaii things and idol culture. It’s definitely not for everyone, but I’m disgusted at how every time I see a famous Brit go there, they rip the shit out of it.

I've lived in Korea for a LOOOONG time but have never been to a maid cafe. However, I definitely see how it started off as something innocent and some cafes became a porn version. I just think with the stress Japanese people work under along with the hours and social stress, it's just nice to be treated in fantasy and innocence. Different cultures just destress differently. Some prefer to kill things, some poison their brains, some throw dice and their lives away. This is much than people and animals getting hurt. I'm also fortunate enough not to be in a position in need of comfort. Don't shit on those who do, when they don't hurt others.

I have seen a lot people taking the "not so favorable" opinion of foreigners of the Maid Café phenomenon rather badly. And more than a bit defensively. I suppose if I was Japanese and this was just an accepted part of my culture that I had grown up with, I might feel the same. Besides it's human to react this way, when some foreigner suddenly critiques something about your culture that most people just accept or ignore. BUT...are maid cafés really kawaii?? Is calling something "kawaii culture" not making something that isn't really cute sound cute? It may have started off innocent and cute at some point in time, but is it really still? Because when a foreigner who hasn't grown up being told this is "kawaii culture" or "people are just having a CUTE time", go in and see what they see without the preconceived notions, it doesn't look cute at all, but weird. And if I was Japanese that would make me stop and reflect over what was really happening. Just as if someone came and pointed out something that was weird about my culture that we did. People are even defending this saying that these men are just anime enthusiasts, who are enjoying the fantasy of having a maid serve them. A maid who must be 17? Dressed like that? Acting like that? What exactly is that fantasy and what would be the natural conclusion to that fantasy? And yet they wonder why anyone who did not grow up with being told "this is just cute culture" would find it absolutely weird and creepy. Even worse many of those who are telling people they have no right to critique Japanese culture because they don't understand, are foreign, whatever, would have no problem if people had been complimenting instead of critiquing. Would the lack of insight, foreignness, whatever, then not matter?
@seller50
