Johnny Miller pulled NO punches and gave ZERO f**ks who the player was. If they made a poor choice or a bad swing that ended up costing them he would critique them the same as he would anyone else including himself. That sort of raw honesty rubbed some viewers the wrong way at times but I tend to think it made him just about the best play by play analyst ever in televised professional golf. I genuinely miss Johnny Miller. If I’m being honest I also miss Nick Faldo on CBS, and Paul Azinger on NBC (took over for Miller and got hung out to dry by the network over money). Jim Nantzypants is too much of a dill hole to ever really respect or enjoy.

That applause at the end atleast made him smile. He also handled that like a gentleman and a pro. He didn't blame his caddy. He didnt break his club. 2 of those shots were EXCELLENT. Literally missed edge by a few inches. I think he handled himself very well and I hope he atleast realizes that in hindsight. Well done sir.😃👍

Golf Digest did an interview with Pete Dye a couple of years after the TPC opened and he said exactly what Gary said. The green is larger than average and it's a shot of 132 yards and if it was grass from tee to green these guys would never miss the green. I remember when I played the Old Course in St. Andrews you are always thinking about the Road Hole for the first 16 holes. Playing the TPC would have to be similar.

I'm reading a book about golf psychology and this incident actually comes up. Russell is so good at hitting greens in regulation, and it's only playing 126 yards here. He thought he stiffed his first. As soon as his first ball went in the water he said it felt like the green shrank to the size of a quarter. He realized in retrospect he got psyched out. And rebounded to have a good 4th round. Golf is so much about managing the mental aspect.

I played the Stadium course on a Monday after the Tourney in I believe 1995, the rough was up and the greens were like pool tables but I had a pretty good day hitting fairways and I had a pretty good short game so I ended up shooting 81 (had a 79 in sight but bogeyed 16 and 18)...I bogeyed 16 so was steamed and wasn't looking at 17, but when the carts came around the bend when I saw the island the first thing I thought was Wow, that looks big. They had us at the pro tee box and our yardage was 138, which was a perfect 9 iron for me and the 9 was my favorite club so I felt really happy on the tee box. I really flushed it and ended up way on the top of the hill and had a very long two putt but I made par. I was the only one in my foursome to hit the green so when everyone else hit a 2nd shot, so did I. My second shot I hit a full pitch and smoked it, hit near the pin on the slope but spun back off and went in the water....lesson learned...it is a tricky hole but the target is damn big. I honestly don't remember there being much wind on my shots so perhaps that made it easier.

I got to play the stadium course on a Monday after the tournament (1995 I believe)...and yes the rough was brutal and the greens were like pool tables, but luckily I was on my game and ended up shooting 82 from the blues, but I butchered 16 and got a double (so there went my chance at shooting in the 70's) so I was so pissed when we rounded the corner I wasn't even thinking about the Island green and when I saw it the first thing I thought was "Jesus, what a big target", it was playing 141 which my 9i being a nice 148 club with a full swing, I just hit a nice easy 9, right in the middle of the green...the other guys in my foursome all got wet (multiple times...my best friend kept trying and finally we joked, Tom, the lake is rising you've hit so many balls in it). Then just for grins I hit a mulligan and stood on a pitch wedge and flushed it and it hit the back bank and spun back within about 15 feet of the cup...I ran it by 3 feet and missed it coming back for a bogie. Anyway it really is a huge target, but hazards never have bothered me....I just hit to a yardage.

I'm guessing that it's part of the hazard. Also before this year you couldn't ground your club in a hazard so that would take swimming over there out of the picture. Maybe a boat?

I played the stadium course on the Monday after the '92 tourney...the rough had not been cut and the greens were still rolling at twelves. If you got in the rough you were dead but if you found the fairway you had the best lie of your life, the ball sat up perfectly. I had a very good round going and had I parred in from 16 I could have shot 79 so was super psyched for the last three holes, but I duck hooked one into the woods on 16 and ended up making an a triple bogie 8 and was so hot I completely forgot about the next hole being the island green. As we rounded the bend in the carts and I got my first look, my first thought was Wow that is a big target, I was really surprised me how big the green looked. They had the blues at the pro tee box that day and the yardage was 134. My pitch wedge if I really stood on it was a 135 yd club but I decided to hit a smooth 9 iron. The pin was in the same position as this video...not much wind, perhaps helping/hindering left to right at 5 mph. I flushed the 9 iron and ended up at the back of the green and had a LONG putt. I was the only one in my foursome to hit the green on their first swing and everyone kept hitting balls...no one wanted to use the drop area. During the mayhem I decided to hit a pitch and again completely flushed it...hit right below the pin took one hop then spun back and went in the water. I ended up three putting for a bogey and missed my par putt on 18 for a five and shot 84 for the day....I was a bit disappointed in blowing up on 16 but overall ecstatic with my round, I hit a lot of good drives and my short game was very sharp all day...I even hit one amazing flop shot on I believe 8 out of trouble to allow a one putt par that a Ranger saw that made him drive over and comment what a great shot that was.
