From the live DVD : "Dianne Reeves - My living-room in Paris"
Recorded from "Theatre Le Chatelet", Paris - 3rd November 2010
Russell Malone is actually playing the "Unchained Melody", last track from his last album "Triple Play", 2010.
This guy is such an amazing musician, there are not many videos of him so I just HAD to share his talent.
As usual, rate and comment if you enjoyed this piece :)
I do NOT own any rights on it, this is property of the respective owners.
Sorry for the bad sync... Blame KZfaq...

Very nice when someone spends the time to dive deep into the instrument and their own subconscious mind.It takes discipline, meditation, being open and a focused surrender but so beautiful to hear the subconscious release. Practice and hard work pay a huge part and listening to others. You can still he has studied improvisation and learned about the colors of chords etc.

As a layman who has no idea about playing jazz, I dont think i can ever understand what people mean when they say things like,"this guy or that guy is a jazz master"...I guess it's for people who can literally play the wrongest notes in the rightest way. That's all I can think of as a guy with zero jazz experience. To me, if you can 'understand' it...you are far better than me. The keys change every freaking bar, sometimes more than once in a single bar. How the hell do you play on that. Playing so many accidentals so tastefully. I can never do that. Even though I've heard about so many jazz legends, I have no reason to not believe that Russell Malone is one of the greatest jazz guitar players alive today. Hands down. He makes you feel every note, even if you are not into jazz. I don't know I just had to get it off my chest. This guy has opened the gates of jazz for people like me.

I find those videos pointless. The only way to approach Jazz is by being shit hot on your theory, so spotting chords and knowing which modes and arpeggios relate to it and most importantly feeling it. Many don't have the feel. I usually find videos like this by checking out the greats first. Such as Pat Martino, Joe Pass and Wes. You have to be really particular in your search.

The late Ted Greene, who has taught or has at least directly or indirectly influenced the solo stylings of many of today's top guitarists, including Russell Malone. Ted played at a completely different level than anyone before or since. He recorded only one album "Solo Guitar" /watch?v=2ujO7qpoK40 Joe Pass (Album of note: "Virtuoso") /watch?v=f5WqXZPUJF0 Also in ensemble: Anything by Wes Montgomery /watch?v=MOm17yw__6U Andreas Öberg /watch?v=9BsfBHmqEbY Anything by Django Reinhardt

Actually Tommy Emmanuel learned the technique from guitar players like Lenny Breau and Ted Greene. I think Lenny Breau said he learned it from Chet Atkins. The technique is used by a lot of players today... Jody Fisher, Andreas Oberg, Russell Malone, etc. Most people would identify the technique with Lenny Breau mainly because he wrote the book on harp harmonics!
