I'm a big RUssell Malone fan and not only is a great player but a great human being who gives of himself, as shown here. I hope I meet him someday.

As a guitarist of 50 plus years this video echoes all the things that I learnt especially as a backing guitarist for vocalist, listen with your ears, play / sing with your heart and soul. Thanks Mr Malone

What an amazing job he did with the singer at the end. It was funny too when he stopped her and said 'don't do that" but it was all for the good of the music. She did incredible with him.

I'm 1000% transcribing Russell's Girl from Ipanema solo. One of my favorite guitarists playing one of my favorite songs. He gets kinda wild in the end though

The hardest part of my time playing guitar was the first month. You know your learning GCD E- A- and the all elusive B7 cowboy chords. You would play them over and over

Man, imagine just playing and having George Benson walk in and take you to his house to talk. That's insane, I kinda wish I was born near the golden age of jazz now, since you can't experience stuff like that anymore, only listen to stories of it happening to others.

Finally, I got the answer to a question I’ve been wrestling with about making melodies. Thanks Russell! One question. How do you find your way out when you get lost in the tune?

"When I'm improvising, I try not to get away from the melody. I always try to play something that will refer to the melody...I like keeping things singable. ...Keep it melodic!" The really great Jazz improvisors keep putting out this same lesson, over and over: Let the melody be your guide.

"When you first start out, you want to play all this stuff. When I was in my twenties, I was so fast I could handcuff lighting. But after awhile, you want to play things that count, play things that mean something. I don't want to play anything now that's going to be--disposable. I want to play something...that's going to stick with people. ...I'm at a point now where I'm...editing now." It's eerie how much great Jazz musicians agree about this stuff!

Cause it's a guitar and not the mona lisa. These things get played and beat up more than you think.

i can only really guess that its because as long as you're not in a country run by starlin, you can do whatever you like with your own equipment..

Anybody else think he was kind of mean? I hope somebody pulled that girl aside and explained to her that no, actually, you can embellish the melody if you want, it's a matter of taste and Russell was just trying to enforce his own on her.

I love Russell... but I hate when people get into a clinic and tell young musicians HOW to play and that there's a RIGHT way and a WRONG way. Total utter bullshit. Play the way YOU want to play... it's YOUR art. If most people you play in front of love it then GREAT keep on going... if most people you play in front of hate it the MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT! But don't go into art with the mindset of "this is right and this is wrong". When I get on stage, I play what the hell i want to play... if it doesn't go over well with the audience, shit I just don't do that again! But you have to know the difference before something you do being subjective versus unpleasant to ears...
