Literally came here to watch this again when I read about that story. 😂 The whole thing reminds me of Americans getting offended when a Filipino boyband tweeted "Hello Negros" when they promoted their concert in Negros Island. Many were offended and some even told Filipinos to change the name. We are not going to adjust our language and names just because Americans are offended. 😂 It's another case of Americans thinking the world revolves around them.

It should be "Na Ge" (That) or "Na Yi Ge" (That one), if pronounced formally. Due to accent, habit, or simply just speak fast, it ends up sound like "nei ge", or "ney-gur" in case you are not familiar with pin-yin. The word(s) itself means "that (one)" or simply a filler word like "well..". Fun thing is, niga means "you" in korean. Edit: Thank for the likes, some minor corrections. Addtionally, it does sounds like "Nei ge" if you say "Na Yi Ge" (That one) fast, too. That could also be the reason.

Some languages require exact pronounication. Watching a US reporter look up a word she'd been hearing around her. she missounded it out so it showed up as celebrity when it actually meant the n word. Saved her very hurt/angry feelings and gave the locals a great laugh.

Words may undergo unbelievable transformations on their way from one language to another. A very plain and simple universal word "fact" was at some point in history borrowed by my native language, but was also adapted to the rules of the local grammar to sound more natural. Now, imagine the utter embarrassment my American colleague had to suffer every time she heard her decent and educated local partners kept saying "fuckt blablabla" in their barbaric language. On one occassion she thought it was enough, blushed, said "it's fact" and left the room.

Black people in USA might be offended by this, on the other side black people in African countries not. I visited Rwanda, Tansania, Ghana and I visited USA, black people from those two sides have absolutely NOTHING in common except the amount of melanin in the skin. Folks in Africa are way too awesome!

Onliest thing...a Nigerian would probably not be offended by Negaaa because its a euphemism in the states...also a Nigerian would probably not have a click in her name as that is Xhosa or Zulu (SOUTH African dialects)

I am from the southern part of China, and the word 那個(那个) does not sound like the N-word because of our accent. However, I told some of my friends to avoid saying that word too frequently when they are in America (we are free to say that in China)

No. Dont hold yourself back from saying a word in your language because of how it sounds to a foreigner. As a black person, provided you are speaking Chinese, i would never be offended to hear you say that

Joe Dorben when you are in someone else's country and speaking you have to be careful to not offend people though. It is not about being allowed to not to do it, but trying to be a good guest.

F. OPE The question is never about not being allowed to do it when it comes to the US though. We have free speech here. People are allowed to come here and say whatever the fuck they want. But this is not a matter of offending anybody, because they are not saying the n word. If a foreigner says the word "beach" around a child, and with their accent it sounds like they are saying "bitch", does that mean they are cursing in front of a child? What would be wrong would be to attack a Chinese person for saying a Chinese word that means "that" just because of what it sounds similar to in another language. Are you hearing how stupid that is?
