I will correct - if you want to understand what is the reasonable voice of the Kremlin, for educated Western minds, you need to listen to him. It's not about what Russians think. It's about how Kremlin wants to be seen among educated Westerners.
@PaulV.
@PaulV. 6 жыл бұрын
Andris Jansons No, he doesnt represent the Kremlin point of view. He is 83 years old and has such great reputation and respect that he doesnt need to express anyone point of view except of his own. Yes his position is partly in line with Kremlin but thats his choice as a person who is patriotic about Russia so is the position of most Russians.

10 years ago I might have agreed with you. Today I can't see how an educated person like him could still support Putin's policies to that extent. I know why a worker in Chelyabinsk might support them, but not a guy like Pozner. Perhaps it is not even about money, he just wants to have his show on state tv and celebrity status, and the noble mission (as he himself has said) to provide viewers at least something worthwile to watch there. But he still collaborates in a way.

Напрасно тут некоторые оскорбляют яркого, классического журналиста. Что-бы дать объективную оценку происходящего, надо для этого занимать несколько отстраненную, беспристрастную позицию - что у него как раз неплохо получается.

Pozner isn't Putin's puppet but he also isn't voice of Russia either. He's like the interpreter of the Kremlin to the West (and to educated ''reasonable'' Russians at home) and he's always had this role and that's why he's being kept on Russian TV. He is allowed to criticize Putin and higher leadership from time to time, same as Echo Moskvi, but for that he himself understands (like Venediktov on Echo) that he has to adhere to the general line of the Kremlin. He can't just go live and become full on spokesperson for Navalny, for example, and Echo Moskvi also cannot do that. Russian regime is interesting in the way that nothing is as clear cut as it usually is in dictatorships, in this hybrid regime. There is still a semblance of some ''official'' opposition like Echo or Pozner (despite repressions against other kinds of opposition) and thriving opposition on internet (youtube, blogs - which, though, also face some issues from time to time like onslaught of trolls in comments who downvote posts and deleting views), and there are still a lot of people that vote for Putin, despite faked ballots being thrown in and many people (like medical personnel, teachers, army) threatened with sacking or other sanctions if they do not show up and vote for Putin.
@vladm5920
@vladm5920 6 жыл бұрын
Seriously? Medical personnel, teachers, army, etc.. threatened with sacking for not voting for Putin??? Do you have any relatives in Russia who hold those positions and had that experience? No..? I have such relatives, and none of them ever faced that. So stop spreading bs...
@as07011
@as07011 6 жыл бұрын
It does not happen everywhere, of course, like everything in Russia. On one hand you have Dagestan or Chechnya which are basically full-on dictatorships where the elections did not matter at all and in Chechnya they can write whichever numbers they want as regards attendance and votes for Putin. I doubt they were threatened in Moscow or St.Pete... And I don't really believe in ''relatives'' thing, as how many relatives can you have really in a country of 145 million with various ''republics'' under various kind of local governors who can be both super dictatorial like in Caucasus or some other ethnic republics, or more Western like Sobianin, mayor of Moscow - to be able to correctly judge what happened in the country, but there were numerous opposition sources claiming that students were ordered to come to elections or they would lose the place in dorms or university, same with doctors, nurses, teachers. Army by default, in some cases they were just marched in a column to the voting booth. Perhaps not necessarily to vote for Putin, but to vote in general, to boost attendance. But if they already use such measures to get you to the voting booth, then probably you cannot be super confident that it is all fair and they won't find out who you voted for in some way.

I am Russian and i upvote this comment. It reflects the best understanding even for the Russia citizens of the current state of Russian politics. I ve got only one remark, that there was no evidence that they forced people to vote specifically for Putin, although there are many proven cases of pressuring people about the turnout, which is anyway, a huge violation of rights. Also notice that people criticizing it below have empty profiles.

Few days ago Pozner said that accusations that Putin ordered to poison Skripal is absurd cuz he sees no benefit for Putin, only negatives, especially before elections. Now Pozner is talking about how people were galvanized to vote for Putin because of poisoning. So either Pozner underestimates Putin either he's a propagandist of Russia once again like was in Soviet times.

Please, try to listen him more carefully. He did actually said something like "he sees no benefit for Putin, only negatives, especially before elections ... because of poisoning" in some other interview (RTVi maybe?). And I can agree with it. But for the rest you interpret him incorrectly. The people were galvanized not because of poisoning, but because of Britain reaction to this case. Yet again, he never claims that Russia is not involved, but he expect to see some kind of evidence as all normal people. Any other country with minimum selfrespect would react accordingly. Not only Russia.

You don't understand him . Russian people galvanized to vote for Putin not because Skripal was poisoned, but on the ultimatums of Britain, without showing any evidence. I am not sure that Russian leaders are not guilty. But let's be honest Kremlin don't need extra reasons to provoke Russians feel under pression of East. For example they can use sanctions , or PRO systems around Russia, which is allegedly in fact the US is building against the United States.

Pozner might indeed be a propagandist. But UK actions (with spy poisoning false flag and hysteria) are indeed galvanized russians to show up at voting stations and vote for Putin. They just do not want any experimentation when it is crystal clear that Russia is under serious attack and real threat coming from the "unified" West. Otherwise, another closest contender (communist Grudinin) would have has much better results.

Popular? People that say that Crimea isn't Russian aren't really running for Russian elections - they're running for Western support, with Russian voters as an afterthought. I wouldn't call them "popular" - well known, well, yeah. Just as Paris Hilton is.

Pozner is too "nuanced" for my taste. When he speaks in English he appeals to western sensibilities, but his commentaries in Russian are significantly different, when he would harp on "hypocrisies of the West" a lot. He is increasingly more of an observer than a journalist because he is not connected to important sources. He does not have means to channel Kremlin's point of view without being a propagandist and he totally disassociates himself from the opposition in order not to lose his Russia TV gig and no one in the opposition would consider him a sympathizer by a long stretch. I had to laugh at his assertion that Russia is an essentially European culture. He, of all people, should know better. The fact that he had to reach back to 19th century classics, many of whom spent more time in Paris than in Russia during their creative years, only underscores this fallacy. Russia is European only in superficial sense; they crave European luxury goods or experiences, but on a deeper level, with their shabby attitude towards minorities, LGBT, treatment of women and pseudo-macho, they are culturally more aligned to the Central Asia than to Europe.

The world is not black and white. And in Russia you dont necessarily have to make a choice to support either Kremlin or opposition. You can have your own opinion. Putin is not perfect but Russian Western-fed opposition is much worse choice for the patriots of the country. And one other thing Russian attitude towards LGBT, minorities, "pseudo-macho" and so on is of course differs from the Western European standarts but most Eastern European countries like Poland or Hungary have pretty much same way of thinking. So again you arrogantly try to pass your own point of view as only one that is right.

Nope, maybe he has to ability cater to all. But his statements are very clear always. An Russian culture is absolutely European culture. So the bullishit you are saying about asian etnity of Russia, is a nonsense. Few decades away in EU and US contries the the attitude towards LGBT and other minorities was absolutely the same as now in Russia. And will I remind you and that was Eastern Europe were the main colonizers and exploiters of slave labor brought from African and Asian countries. Does this mean that the entire European nation, on the genetic and cultural level - damned racists? I do not think so. Therefore, stop giving such estimates based on what situational things. Especially let's be honest, you do not know anything about Russia.

Navalny should be president of Russia. Pozner is a guy who is very careful with his words, he is on oppositions side deep inside, he knows what is happening in Russia, but he will never express his views clearly, because he'll lose his job on state owned Russian TV. Reminds me of Lord Varys from Game Of Thrones.

Pozner wishes that Russia to be only european, not asian. But Russia is not only european, i think, it should be sort of eura-asian country. Geographicaly speaking most of its territory lie in Asia from which most of natural resourses come from, which in turn make up the whole economy of the country. So stop calling yourself european. You try hard to be european while the european do reject you as european.

Lucius and Ilya there is a big risk by calling Russia as European. When you call like that than there would be two options. A. Call yourself European and let the rest of the country go into sort of independence states because that's how people in Siberia or Dagistan might see it. And B. just dont try hard identify yourself only 'european' and be proud of all the diversity you have which is not necessarly european.

Why are you trying to put Europe above Asia? Do you think that Asia is bad? So you do not respect Asian countries and peoples? Asia is no worse than Europe! Asian peoples and countries have a rich ancient history and culture! The development of civilization began in Asia, and not in Europe! I admire the cultural heritage of ancient India, China, Persia and others! Europe as a young child compared to Asia!
