It's actually quite remarkable to see how public perception of the Romanovs has done such a complete 180 in Russia in recent decades. I recall seeing a procession march in Yekaterinburg back in 2018 on the centennial of the execution, and what stood out to me the most was a priest proclaiming the family as "innocent people who violated no laws". That message in itself speaks volumes about the massive social change in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union

I can't help but notice the similarities between Alexandra, and Marie Antoinette. They both were executed brutally. They both lost their children were murdered brutally, and they both were extremely unpopular foreigners.

There's actually a very striking similarity between the reign of Nicholas II and that of Queen Elizabeth. They were both flung into the spotlight of the monarchy at very young ages due to their fathers' premature deaths, and faced immense struggles because of it. Nicholas' downfall was partially due to him ruling as a monarch based on horrendously outdated Czarist ideologies as his father and other predecessors had. However, global changes put him at a huge disadvantage destined to fail. Elizabeth II often struggled with a similar dilemma, conflicting outdated monarchist values of her predecessors with the demands of a rapidly changing world. This is seen particularly in her responses to the Aberfan disaster in 1966 and the death of Princess Diana in 1997, the latter of which came perilously close to toppling the monarchy altogether

So hard to say what you would do in any situation but I would like to think that if I was a princess I would want to strive to be like Diana very kind, giving, warm and loving I wouldn’t want to put all my effort into my family and my country❤ I feel like especially back in the day royalty was almost set up for failure they had so much pressure so young.

While Alexandra was not a big catch, neither was the “princess” from the deposed Bourbon Dynasty that both Alexander III & his wife preferred. I bet that woman was relieved pretty soon after Nicholas married Alexandra when things got very precarious in Russia.
