💬 Some of the attractions in the video:
08:00 Exchange Square (Spit of Vasilyevsky Island). This is one of the most famous architectural ensembles of St. Petersburg, an example of the harmony of architecture with the landscape of the banks of the Neva River.
The entire complex of monuments is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Spit of Vasilievsky Island is one of the centers of attraction for tourists. The spit ensemble was formed in the 19th century. This is the central place in the panorama of St. Petersburg. Unique architectural monuments and museums are located here: the Stock Exchange building, the Kunstkamera, the Zoological Museum, the Building of the Twelve Collegia, the Building of the Academy of Sciences, Rostral Columns. Until 1885, there was a St. Petersburg seaport on Strelka.
08:32 Rostral columns are architectural structures on the Spit of Vasilievsky Island. In the 19th century, they served as lanterns for the capital's port.
Two rostral columns were erected in 1805-1810 by the French architect Tom de Thomon. The columns are decorated with rostras of ships. This refers to the ancient Roman custom of decorating columns with rostra of defeated enemy ships.
Inside each column there is a staircase leading to the upper landing with a huge bowl-lamp. Oil was poured into the bowl, giving a huge pillar of fire indicating the way to the ships. In 1957, gas was supplied to the lanterns and now, they are lit on especially solemn days.
12:40 Palace Bridge was built at the beginning of the 20th century.
The gigantic structure consists of 5 spans and is striking in its dimensions: the total length is 260.1 meters, the width is 27.7 meters. A unique swing mechanism lifts 700-ton spans up over the Neva. The night panorama of the raised bridge is the hallmark of St. Petersburg.
25:46 The Bronze Horseman, the symbol of St. Petersburg, is actually not made of copper, but bronze. The monument was opened in 1782.
The Bronze Horseman weighs 8 tons and is 5 meters high. The famous sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet was invited from Paris to work on this monument. The Russian Emperor Peter points his hand in the direction of Sweden, with which Russia has been fighting for more than 20 years for access to the Baltic Sea.
28:35 Isaac's Cathedral is the fourth largest domed church in the world. For the interior decoration 400 kilograms of gold and 1,000 tons of bronze were used. The temple was built for about 40 years - 1818-1858. The building is 101.5 meters high.
