Russia’s assault on Ukraine continues to intensify, prompting the U.S. and European allies to ramp up military and economic aid. Now, Russian authorities argue that funneling heavy weaponry into the region will escalate Russia’s tensions with NATO. The rhetoric is leading many to wonder whether it is Russia's intention to widen this conflict to the West - and, if so - whether the threat of nuclear weapons will become real. The moment is a marked shift in both support and rhetoric from the U.S. and other global powers. Will it spark a World War 3? Moderator Razia Iqbal of the BBC World Service leads a conversation on where we are now and what could happen next.

I am very sorry to ask this questions. I am very stress about the current russia war. If World War 3 broke out, what would happen to our Vietnam current financial system (Vietnam banks and our regular vnd currency)?

@Ruska True but there wasn't nuclear bombs and Article 5.0 get back then. Russia would know it would be suicide to invade a NATO country. Well either the US didn't care enoug about Ukraine to bring them into NATO or Ukraine was too corrupt. Or they wanted a proxy playground to fight and weaken Russia. That will work but they will weaken themselves too. And their buddies in the EU will start getting pretty annoyed. Sanctions are just boomerangs.

Is anyone else fearful of this possibly happening? I am so naïve as I just figured nothing like this could really happen in my lifetime and that it would just be "conflicts" or small wars. But the reality is that we are in a perfect storm for something like this to happen.

@@ck6045 Totally in agreement. We are all born to die someday, so we should try our best to enjoy what we can in ways that also bring happiness to others. If the planet Earth has consciousness, as it is the giver of life, I surmise it would be relieved to be rid of the human species that has been so destructive to it.

This discussion appeals greatly to the rational and unbiased part of ourselves. This is by far one of the most informationally condensed and progressive series of videos about the war in ukraine, and certainly has one of the best moderators. Thank you princeton university for this series of high level panel discussions. Please continue your good work.

All well and good to talk about removing essentially ineffective land based nuclear warheads from Europe, but we do have to remember that Putin invaded Ukraine with an idea of recreating an imperial Russia with the ability and will to behave as an imperial power. In that case, there is a very strong need for a heavily armed Europe and to have that Europe become independent of the need for Russian resources and especially oil and gas. Here is the thing, military preparedness is very expensive, but it is a helluva a lot cheaper than the loss in blood and treasure that Ukraine has experienced in this war. And if Article V is worth the paper it is written on, then the Baltic states are going to need to have a NATO that puts on the full fangs and claws of a dangerous military to show to Russia - whether under Putin or a future tsarist wannabe - that when it comes to military adventurism of the type we are seeing in Ukraine, it will not happen or we will go to war, and that has to be convincing enough so that we never do go to war. (Yes, there will be dirty games and measures short of war to weaken a Russia which has demonstrated a sustained historical sense of empire and belligerence to contain it, because the evidence of history - distant and present - shows that to be an inconvenient truth.) And one last thing, Russia cannot have her frozen assets back. Those should be war reparations to help pay for the restoration of Ukraine. The object lesson must be, "you break it, you pay for it". And yes, the world is polarized into Russia-China and Europe-North America with regards to big economic and military power as a go forward, and appeasing/rewarding Russia will not prevent that. (Why do I hear history rhyming in a "peace in our time" way with some of the comments by these admittedly very learned people? And yes, I also understand that in all gaming scenarios dealing with nuclear escalation that it ends in a strategic exchange, but to give Putin-Russia the power to continuously push for empire is unacceptable, or we may as well just surrender today because that playbook ends with Russia performing this belligerent cycle over and over and over again.)

Disappointed: no reference to the lead up to this war / no reference to Ukraine breaching Minsk agreement/ no reference to Donetsk and Luhansk asking Russia for assistance/ currently having referendum to join Russia No reference to nato using Ukraine to push for war ( stating Ukraine can join- but this was never the intention… Ukraine govt imposing jail for people who vote in this referendum/ imprisoned opposition leaders / sanction anti govt media/ passed laws that it’s illegal to have a Russian passport/ go to Russian church /AZOV and other pro Nazi forces in Ukraine- USA & Ukraine voted no - European countries and Canada UK Australia abstained from a anti Nazi resolution in the United Nations there is a lot to unpack! these are values juxtaposed with the West I am not pro Russian- I am pro truth and having intelligent discourse taking all points to consideration… I was disappointed in that I was hoping to hear a learned discussion I feel it fell short.
