Is anyone else fearful of this possibly happening? I am so naïve as I just figured nothing like this could really happen in my lifetime and that it would just be "conflicts" or small wars. But the reality is that we are in a perfect storm for something like this to happen.

This is a shockingly shallow conversation. Holy cow.

All well and good to talk about removing essentially ineffective land based nuclear warheads from Europe, but we do have to remember that Putin invaded Ukraine with an idea of recreating an imperial Russia with the ability and will to behave as an imperial power. In that case, there is a very strong need for a heavily armed Europe and to have that Europe become independent of the need for Russian resources and especially oil and gas. Here is the thing, military preparedness is very expensive, but it is a helluva a lot cheaper than the loss in blood and treasure that Ukraine has experienced in this war. And if Article V is worth the paper it is written on, then the Baltic states are going to need to have a NATO that puts on the full fangs and claws of a dangerous military to show to Russia - whether under Putin or a future tsarist wannabe - that when it comes to military adventurism of the type we are seeing in Ukraine, it will not happen or we will go to war, and that has to be convincing enough so that we never do go to war. (Yes, there will be dirty games and measures short of war to weaken a Russia which has demonstrated a sustained historical sense of empire and belligerence to contain it, because the evidence of history - distant and present - shows that to be an inconvenient truth.) And one last thing, Russia cannot have her frozen assets back. Those should be war reparations to help pay for the restoration of Ukraine. The object lesson must be, "you break it, you pay for it". And yes, the world is polarized into Russia-China and Europe-North America with regards to big economic and military power as a go forward, and appeasing/rewarding Russia will not prevent that. (Why do I hear history rhyming in a "peace in our time" way with some of the comments by these admittedly very learned people? And yes, I also understand that in all gaming scenarios dealing with nuclear escalation that it ends in a strategic exchange, but to give Putin-Russia the power to continuously push for empire is unacceptable, or we may as well just surrender today because that playbook ends with Russia performing this belligerent cycle over and over and over again.)
