Russia-US talks on Ukraine: How real is threat of invasion? | DW News

2 жыл бұрын

The conflict has killed more than 13,000 people, including thousands of civilians. Now residents feel they are being asked to prepare for a full-out battle with Russia.
Could Ukraine lose the Donbass region to Russia, and if not, how much further loss of life could become necessary to ward off the threat? International allies like the US and others have voiced support, but will that be enough to protect Ukraine?
Or is Russia just flexing its muscles on its borders again, looking to keep everyone guessing, and retaliation at bay?

I agree. That would be an ideal solution, if every soldier around the world just refused to fight. Because it's never their fight, they are forced to clean up the mess they did not create. And politicians would quickly cut with their nonsense if they didn't have the military backing.

So US troops can perform training a few kilometers from the Russian border in a NATO member country. So why is it so wrong for Russia to perform drills and training on its border on its own territory? To me NATO is the real aggressors, the Russians are not bending to bullies and stands up to its own safety and interests. If Ukraine officially joins NATO, that's a major threat to Russia's security and in that scenario war will be inevitable. If Ukraine remains neutral and stop obeying its western masters, things will get better. They were very close, until western puppets took over the government.

Ukraine has given away its nuclear weapons in the 90s, yet Russia doesn‘t respect Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, neither the will of the Ukrainians to be part of the liberal-western world. The Russian regime fears having liberal democracies at the borders. Russian citizens would turn against the regime when seeing even Ukrainians prospering in NATO & EU. Hence, Russia prefers corrupt failed states in the neighbourhood that can be controlled more easily. USA & Western Europe must support Ukraine and whatever state that wants to be part of our liberal community.

Honestly a liberal Russian is a threat to Europe. Navalny is pro ukranian war. Putins authoritarianism is bleeding the country dry with wars in Ukraine,Syria and other parts of thr globe. And not to mention Putins support of the oligarchs is good as this creates economic stagnation and hard to move up the social ladder. Russia will never join the EU, their geolpolitical ambitions of conquest will be inherited by their leaders liberal or not. Its best to keep Russia strong enough to protect itself but weak enough not to threaten global hegemony.

Imagine a hypothetical situation where Canada, and Mexico are both hostile authoritarian regimes who are sponsored by China, with California and New England seceeding from the Union due to independence fervor, and are on the verge of joining the Shanghai pact, and are constantly engaging in smear campaigns against the US in their home country, and persecuting the history of joint US relations in the past, would you stand ideally by in that case? Of course not, and any reasonable person would recognize that the US in that case is on the defensive, but when we have the discussion on Russia, who have lost over half it's population (since they are the logical continuation of the USSR especially for media war hawks) then maybe you can understand how the foreign policy blunders of the Yeltsin government in the 90s to unconditionally let Ukraine and the Eastern bloc join NATO which was for the sole purpose of ensuring that Russia never is able to challenge the west and ensuring western European hegemony in the region. To put it in short, the Russian state isn't afraid of liberal democracies, ideology hardly plays a part for the Oligarchy in the 21st century, but when you have state sponsored color revolutions sponsored by neo-liberal hegemonic thinking of "eliminating the axis of evil" then of course you will be apprehensive to just let your backyard walk over to your neighbours so easily. Stop trying to conflate the EU or the US as some wounded martyrs when they have been provoking Eastern Europe and have kept it underdeveloped for decades now.

I feel too often when something like this happens, the country immediately asks “is the US going to help us?”. The Ukraine is capable of fighting off the Russian army, this is not the old Soviet army. Keep in mind Finland held off the Red Army in 1939, and the Red Army was much stronger back then, and the Ukraine is stronger than Finland was back then.

War is not a solution between neighbours. Germany can play vital role in making peace between these two eastern European countries. Europe should resolve it's own problems without the interference of US and UK. US and UK wants trouble everywhere to keep their political activities active.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, *Ukraine held about one third of the Soviet nuclear arsenal, the THIRD LARGEST IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME, as well as significant means of its design and production. 130 UR-100N intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) with six warheads each, 46 RT-23 Molodets ICBMs with ten warheads apiece, as well as 33 heavy bombers, totaling approximately 1,700 warheads remained on Ukrainian territory.* Formally, these weapons were controlled by the Commonwealth of Independent States. *In 1994 Ukraine agreed to destroy the weapons, and to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).* When your ghosts of Christmas past, made miserable mistakes that led to your current demise...

Russia also promised not to violate the territorial integrity of Ukraine if it gave Russia its nuclear weapons. That didn't work out well for Ukraine and moving towards Russia by placating it will not be good in the long term for Ukraine. "Best thing that could happen would be for Ukraine to declare itself neutral" - for those who do not understand- Ukraine was neutral all these years. Moreover, Ukraine has been recorded in the Ukrainian Constitution - "non-block status". And this is exactly what Russians took advantage to occupy our lands. Russians never forgive friendship with them, and the contract signed with Russian is not cost even a piece of paper on which it is written.
