From some personal experience seeing things similar to this in the military, I'll just say this. No amount of personal items or KZfaq equipment are worth the cost of your life. No matter how inconvenient it would be to leave. Just please consider that. Best wishes

But please know that you aren’t alone, and people all over the world who watch these videos are thinking of you. I would pack a bag of the most important things (passport, cash, water, and a few clothes) and just have it ready if you need to take shelter or just leave. And have 2-3 planned routes out of the country, and your phone will probably not work that great if attacked so I would guess a normal paper map would be good.

There is bound to be an Aesop fable relating to this! Stay safe!

Something to consider: in modern warfare, one of the first steps is to target and disrupt primary infrastructure - power plants, major road/railways, and... airports. Through the use of air- and long-range missile power, this can be done before a single troop crosses the border. I'm not saying "panic!!", I'm saying that waiting may leave you stranded, so plan accordingly.

Obviously the first thing is to get all your documents and paperwork together in case of emergency evac. Best thing to do is plan ahead as much as you can. Get visa paperwork started for another country now as a precaution even if you never need to leave it's at least an option.

Thanks for this video, it's interesting to get an inside view. A few points to note from a human rights and international relations professional: Poland has already turned their borders into emergency zones controlled by the military to keep out refugees (they say it's covid, but really it's Syrians), and Turkey is also not particularly refugee-friendly at the moment. Also, don't underestimate the speed with which troops will cut through the country, especially since they will encounter no resistance whatsoever. You will likely not have the time you mention you would have. It's hard to tell what the best option is, but I'd recomment to at least have a plan in place and a suitcase packed. Lastly "Oh it's an American, we don't care"... said no Russian official ever ;) That being said, thanks for the insight and stay safe.

Alternatively, if you get interrogated you can entertain them. Laughter always helps show you aren’t a threat. If it gets bad enough, pull a disappearing act 😅

What a horrible situation. I live in China and we were faced with similar choices a couple of years ago (for very different reasons). I’m pleased I stayed here instead of running back home. The advice we got from home was to get away when everything first started - which didn’t make any sense to me. So I decided to sit it out. Few rough months at one point but seems to have worked out. I think governments say “get out now” as fairly standard advice in many situations. Good luck with everything! Will keep an eye on it.

the craziest part is that it's even a question which is more of a threat....like obviously the invasion...but the world is somehow more afraid of an invisible enemy than one that is actively very much there. best of luck to you no matter the turn of events

Is there a storage unit there you can rent? Put what you can in storage and take a vacation as soon as your medical status allows. Or just leave your stuff in your apartment and make arrangement to continue paying the rent. If your stuff gets destroyed you have escaped with your lives. If all goes well you can return to life as normal.

From living in New York and seeing my state get hit first and hard with covid, it all started out where people weren't sure or not if they should be worried and before too long everyone was unpacking the stores, hospitals were being overwhelmed and fortunately it was a virus not an army. The embassy is right, if you don't leave before an invasion it will likely be very difficult to leave as everyone will be certain what is happening and many will hop on that bus. Maybe get out and see what happens, maybe you could always return?

You need to put together a Jack Bauer style "go bag".

It's a difficult situation. Here are my thoughts. While you both have COVID see what you can do to store and protect your valuables. Maybe leave them with friends further towards the west of Ukraine or perhaps some sort of storage facility in that direction. When you no longer have COVID, assuming an invasion has not happened yet, take a cheap vacation to somewhere in the Baltic or Eastern Europe. Rest up in a cheap Hostel in one of those countries for a few weeks and keep an eye on the situation from afar. If the situation escalates you'll be glad not to be stuck there. If it doesn't, and things calm down, you can travel back and resume your normal life in Kiev. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

This is the first video of yours that I've seen. I often wonder how people living in places where war comes to your door manage. How does one live with those conditions? I can't even fathom. I hope whatever you and your girlfriend decide to do keeps you safe. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

can someone of you drive? maybe get a cheap car that just drives. In case of an invasion you'd be not the only one trying to get out... With a car you can at least go west or south and figure out how to continue after depending on the situation. And your luggage is also easier to transport and gives a bit more space for extra luggage. Lets hope nothing happens and stay safe!

You certainly did relieve the tension there at 7:45 Man i was laughing out loud here! (and the American spy joke at the end) I was visiting my wife’s family 2 weeks ago in Lviv (I heard some people are now also taking their money from the banks). I hope it’ll all go good and doesn’t escalate further. For now I think the best is indeed what you’re doing now, just watching the news, think rationally and hope for the best. What kind of work do you do that brought you to Kiev? If you're actually a working magician, then the outlook for that has strongly improved since George Hansen wrote 20 years ago that it's such an un-lucrative entertainment specialty.

I doubt Turkey would be easy to reach during war, the plane -- if there is any -- should do a traverse through Europe anyway because Crimea and the Black Sea would be no-go areas. Probably there will be lots of people trying to do the same with the other escape routes like Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Hope peace will prevail.

Take it one day at a time, just make sure that if you decide to leave you have two ways to go and a grab and go bag packed incase you miss your moment and things speed up faster then planned. Oh wow, I totally forgot you were in Kiev! I know that the situation is blown out of proportion over here in the USA, but it's still scary to think about what might happen. I hope it doesn't escalate, but if it does, I hope you two will be feeling better so you can evacuate if you need to! I'd say have a plan to at least get out of the city if things get really bad, but I'm inclined to agree that an invasion going straight for Kiev seems unlikely. In case if you're moving - don't go to Poland (unless no other choice) as living is getting worse here with everything so much more expensive by the day, while payrolls either get cuts (blaming pandemic) or at best stays the same. Not to mention internal political situation is iffy with massive tension between two major parties dividing also whole nation in half. It's not great here.

Dear Jason, in case of the worst case happening just save your life and your girlfriend and leave the equipment where it is. Wow that's a tough call Jason. Hard to know. Potential consequences are usually not so drastic or varied. When will you be able to travel? You might ask your embassy whether an exception could be made in those circumstances. Besides that, how about taking a holiday somewhere like Turkey? Worst case scenario, you can't get back and you lose your stuff and you cancel your rent and bills through your bank. Best case, things calm down and you return and you've had a slightly weird holiday where you feel safe but anxious. Obviously unless you can evacuate with virus you're stuck for now. Depends how quickly things progress.

Valuable perspective and thanks for the video. Minor comment, as far as I am aware, Kyiv is the preferred latinisation of the capital. In my circles, Kiev is the Russian-speaking variant and is frequently used these days to convey pro-Russian sentiment.
