RUSSIAN Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reviewed live-fire exercises in western Belarus on Thursday (January 3), part of a surge of military activity close to Ukraine.
Russia, in its biggest deployment to Belarus since the Cold War ended, is expected to have 30,000 troops as well as fighter jets and missile systems for the joint exercises that run until Feb. 20, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.
The presence of a large Russian force in Belarus has added to western fears that Russia could be preparing to attack Ukraine on multiple fronts. Moscow denies any such intention and says the exercises are defensive in nature.
Ukraine said Russia currently has a total of 115,000 troops near its borders.

They might use the tree line like the artillery and anti tank weaponry but engaging in the open field is how tank battles are fought especially in somewhere like Ukraine that is such a big country with a lot of open land.

Russians have no desire to kill Ukrainians or even to invade. They only wish to protect their own people, and those that have seperated to join them. How is this a bad thing? The Ukrainian govt. been fighting against legal referendums and killing their own former citizens.

That's why Russia cannot afford a real war . They would very soon run out of ressources and no one would give them any credit,all their accounts would be frozen. China couldn't support them, because the answer would be an international boycott of their products and therefore the breakdown of the chinese economy. Putin thought that his game of intimidation would work, but it's the opposite. He went too far and it's too late to step back now. He's in a mess that he has created himself.
