Having that stand up room with the canvas tent alone just makes it!!!! With any semi permanent "more than a week living" is a must have; simply for a morality booster if you have any type of companionship. People need their space. Love your set up. I so want a canvas tent now, If I may suggest a helpful heating suggestion. If you have an aggregate foundation under your pallet floor put some 3 to four inch flex tube from your roof peak "where your hottest spot" is down to the floor and under it. Also add some of the same tube to your cold air intake from your stove. This will draw the heat from the roof to under your floor and that will help heat your floor. When your floor is warm clothing is optional. If you have a power supply you could also use a fan to pull not push the heat from the top to the bottom. I also believe the prevailing winds should be taken into account when deciding where to put your stove. Great video thank you for sharing.

Splendid review. I own the UP-2. It's great. In terms of setting it up, I also experienced the need for some muscle power the first few times I set it up. No more - now I just attach a rope above the "umbrella rod handle" with a loop at the other end. That way I can use both hands to press the top up while using one foot in the loop to drag the "umbrella rod" down. It makes it a breeze to set up the tent.

Canvas for me! Remember all the plywood and lumber are cold for some time taking longer for your canvas to heat up. Unlike your bear tent that has no wood inside. Great video

Love the stove in the Russian Tent with the heat shields attached to the stove on the end and the 1 tent side. They reduce in 1/2 the clearance required to any flammable.

I haven't seen a review of this tent or any of its variants that has not been wildly popular. The company set out to make the best possible tent and they have succeeded beyond all of our dreams.

It seems the Russian Bear tent allows more for instant gratification regarding time to set up, heating the area, and having what you need to get your camping time started. The canvas tent I LOVE the way it has allowed the camping experience to be more homey in the sense it feels like a cabin. The perch at the door to have coffee over looking the scenery, the loft allowing more storage, the hookup for propane, the eating table, I could go on and on. I may be biased towards the canvas tent since I've watched you build this baby from the ground up. Literally. There is an emotional investment there that can't be found in the Russian Bear Tent. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn my nose up to either! You've done an amazing job with both sites and this video was extremely informative for me regarding the similarities and differences. Glad to see the Russian Bear tent wasn't dark during the day. That had been on of my main concerns. I tend to be a bit claustrophobic and the darkness would have impacted my ability to be 100% comfortable in it mentally while watching. Thank you for sharing Jay!

This has been the best video I could find on a review I could find on a canvas tent shop tent. Also a great video showing other alternative options for cold weather camping.

Really enjoy seeing just how well the hot tents can survive in the winter where is it well below freezing temps. Not only that but it was left it standing and can tell it survived alone! Another great video showing just how well that tent is constructed!

I've camped many nights in this, everywhere from the mountains of Montana to the desert of Joshua Tree California. Over time, you'll see it discolor slightly and turn more orange, and it requires guy outs for any sort of wind. However, it is by far worth the purchase. If you ice fish you can unzip portions of the floor for access to the ice and even use an insulated floor accessory that is really comfortable to sleep directly on (although I'd recommend using a cot with a thermarest xtherm pad in case your fire goes out.) With that tent, it's nice to have a firebox that can accommodate full length logs but is reasonably portable such as the pomoly t-brick ultra. It's served me well and has the internal structure to prevent warping which is common with titanium. Still, there's no getting around the fact that all of this is a heavy set of gear, so you want to bring a sled if you're walking more than a few minutes from your vehicle.

Both tents are awesome! The Russian bear is great if you are moving around allot and the canvas one is perfect for a stationary place. Please keep the videos coming!!!!

The Russian Bear tent is darker and a little more cozier to me . I also like both and strangely enough I like the canvas tent for it's roominess lol... My preference would be the Russian tent though...

Thermal fan on the stove in the canvas tent will circulate the warm air quicker a small electric fan hung high in the Russian Bear tent will help circulate the warm air, results in less wood required. Also a larger version of the stove in your Russian tent will really cone to its own in the canvas tent

I'm a disabled police officer and use to enjoy camping. I'm also a U. S. Vet and I'm more than familiar with most aspects of tents, but you speak so well and explain everything so simply that weather you know slot or very little about tents your video brings everyone up to speed. Stayed in double wall canvas tents in a drill camp north of Great Slave. They put a Canadian tire tarp over the roof. Added a new one every fall. Saves the roof from UV rays and snow slides off much easier.

I would probably never find myself in a situation where I could find the time to get a canvas tent up to where I could enjoy it as fully as you have. That said, I could see myself finding many opportunities to enjoy a fast setup style of tent like the russian bear tent. Thank you for showing the advantages of both and your experiences with them!

Having 2 daughters and a wife, it fits my needs more since we love the outdoors and enjoy it all together most of the time. Great review. You forgot to mention that the RB can convert to a Sauna. I use a rechargeable ceiling fan/ light on the roof of the RB tent,helps distribute the heat throughout the tent. Thanks for the share Brother 👊💥🇨🇦💥👊

This was a really good video Jay. Good info for folks considering a tent for camping and the things that go along with camping like not freezing to death lol. But if I may say not to punch a hole in your canvas tent , your not very far from having a wood cabin . Wood floor, wood frame , 1/2 wood walls, all you lack is wood roof and upper walls and you'd have a wood frame cabin.

Yipes! When you started opening the doors on the Russian Bear I was thinking there's no inside, it's just like one of those Russian dolls, it's zippers all the way down! Fortunately not. Man, that is a beautiful tent, though. Nice stove, too. And my backpacking days are over...

Jay, have you ever considered a "heat exchanger" in the wall tent? Attached to the stove pipe it would circulate the heated air quicker. Also, have you considered an inner canvas wall for the wall tent? A simple project, but again it would add weight. However the benefits would be tremendous. The main difference in time to heat the two tents is air space. There is almost double the space (in cubic feet) in the wall tent vs. the Russian Bear tent. So do not make your decisions based on time alone.

Both of your set ups look cozy once you get the fire going, I run a smaller 10x10 and knowing your stove is key in any hot tenting situation. The first couple times out was a struggle, once I sorted out the stove operation it's so much fun.

Awesome video. I bought a mini rechargeable fan for my hot tent. I only used it once, but I hung it on the ceiling pointing down and it circulated the heat really well. It was like $8 and it weighs almost nothing. Lasts like 12hrs on a charge too.

What a great video Jay, quite the departure from the normal. Loved the information on both tents I think they have two different purposes, like you said the canvas tent you definitely can make it your own like you have done, the Russian Bear tent has its benefits as far as mobility but you can only do so much with it. Stay safe and can’t wait to watch Chrystal do some cold weather over night camping, I know what my wife’s answer would be, Hell no. LOL

You should try fans for stoves: fan the heat from stove around! I see two different uses for the tents.. The Russian being more of a Shelter you could stay in for long periods of time. The other tent: sets up better with plywood walls….

You mentioned the fly over the roof... What if you installed a fly on the sidewalls as well... Wouldn't that crest that air insulation between the layers like the Bear Tent? I think if I was gonna make a permanent tent that would be a valuable option🤠

Great job on the vlog. The Buffalo hotdog amazing. As a few of the other comments mentioned where it originated was at the Anchor bar by the bar owners mother. The bar owner asked his mom to cook his friends something to eat. She did not have much but some chicken wing which she fried. After cooking she tossed with Frank's Red Hot sauce and some melted butter. Served the wings with celery & carrots and blue cheese for dipping. Turned out to be a hit. That combination of Franks Red Hot has been turned into Buffalo hot sauce that's now bottled with tons of preservatives. Love the new Russian tent and hope Crystal likes camping in the negative temperature......it will make for a good blog for sure.

Have you considered either adding a Russian Bear stove to the canvas tent setup or even swapping them? Seems the larger area in the canvas tent would benefit more from the more efficient Russian Bear Stove.

Great video Jay well done on a great comparison, I like the bear tent but a pet hate of mine has always been that tent floors get dirty from dirty boots and are difficult to keep clean, I always like it when you give the canvas tent a sweep and it looks clean when you have your coffee, maybe if you build a new platform for the bear tent and remove the floor sheet , leave a little trapdoor that you can open and sweep the dirt into then you don't have to struggle with a scoop or try and get over the lip at the door.

Sounds like a great investment for a tent !!! In fact going to tell some friends of mine who are building homes and this would do the trick for them in base camp for them with the cold weather!!! Jay I think it will be in the Spring & Summer Months that will really be the answer for the Russian Bear Tent with flies and bugs and creepy crawling things with Thunder storm TWISTERS also with it !!! Twisters are the one thing I am thinking of but otherwise I am telling some friends I really like it A LOT!!!

Nice comparison. I think if you figured out the square footage of each tent, the canvas tent may not be as far off of the other tent for heating up time.

The RB is more suitable for a 'love shack', nice and cozy and no drafts, glass in the fireplace, etc. I'd construct a large futon platform high enough off the ground to store stuff under, but at the same time not too high that you can't sit on the edge and dangle your feet under a table by the fire. I'd cover the mattress with skins and set up a quiet fan to blow the hot air from the fire under the platform, and also one up high to circulate the heat at the top of the tent. What you need is a setup where a girl can get nice and cozy. Maybe a platform big enough to accommodate a king sized futon, something that can be disassembled easily if necessary.

JAY I enjoy your videos.your discussion on wall tents reminded me of this . There was a company out of northern BC called net zero construction. ( I believe). They did a lot of work in the north and had a SIP package that copied the wall tent form but was made if SIP (structural insulated panels ) I saw a video where one was assembled by high school kids. Not sure if it would be classified as a temporary structure but it would be cosy and easy to heat.

Should try moving the heat shield out as far as it can go so you have air flow past that other piece of glass for more heat.

Glad to see I’m not the only one that found the UP5 hard to set up. Other than that I think it’s worth the money as a mobile tent. I set up on the lake and ice fish/camp.

The Russian Bear tent - If you are going out for a weekened or a few days. need something big, tough and secure for the elements. its not an overnight tent, its a snowmobile to a hunting spot, set it up and hunt for several days. People really misunderstand the Sidewall tents. They aren't a, Move to a location, set up for 2-3 days, move on. they aren't even really a move to a location and stay for a few days and move on. These things need to be thought of as Semi-perm Cottages. These, you bring on a hunting trip and set up the base camp. You set up for them to stay for 3 weeks to a month in one area. Or longer. These things are and were used by construction companies, by the military, by anyone who is building a camp that intends to be there for months on end but still needs to be able to move. Canvas sidewall tent, Floor- you can have an open floor, ground mat floor, wooden floor, raised wooden floor with heat under it, teak floor with slits and drainage. its all up to you. People seem to forget, Canvas tent you an also get inner liners for it. Oye, Outer fly, canvas wall, inner liner or frame liner. This provides an extra layer of insulation often made from a breathable layer, though in some cases it could be cotton, wool, or even horse hair. Now, how "luxurious" You want your sidewall, all depends on how long you are going to be there. Think about it, you can get 16x24 or larger, that's 384 square feet of living space. you can then section of the inside into separate rooms. You can have a compost or cassette toilet inside that you can take out every few days to the outhouse. You can have a canvas bathtub and shower, heated by hot water on demand propane water heater. You can set up a kitchen. You can have wood stove and propane heater. I've seen people bring in 2x100 pound tanks for base camps, drain off 1 till empty then swap to the new one, haul the empty out for a refill and return with other supplies once a week. In all honesty, A sidewall can be just as "comfortable" as a full camper, all depending on the set up and such. I've even seen cases where someone included a washer in theirs, no need for a dryer as they just hug the wet clothing on a line over the stove.

Good review. I think the canvas tent lends itself to customizing such as Joe and Zach have done.

The more I learn about the Russian Bear Tents and the more videos I watch about them….the more I want to get one for myself…. UNTIL I see the price and then I swallow the lump in my throat and mentally cringe, won’t stop me from getting one…I will just need to save up for it….😅 I think I will go for the Hexagon style Russian Bear tent instead though, I like the size and look of it more than the one you have.. If you don’t have a snowmobile, you can load up one of those sleds and haul it behind you as you snow shoe your way to the location.

Love this video. If I were back in the US I would like to get the Russian bear tent for ice fishing now knowing the floor comes out. I know there are different sizes and its pricey but it gives more room than a pop up ice shack. I am 6'5 and I hate tight spaces. With the canvas tent I have seen videos of the assembly and it looked like a pain but worth it in the long run. I saw a video of a canvas tent and the yawning gives space. There is a guy that showed the stove in his canvas tent that had a pellet burning attachment for his stove. Good add on just for a back up if you don't have time to get wood in the off time.

Jay, spicy food stuff is referred to as “Buffalo” because allegedly spicy hot wings were invented here in the 50s. There are a couple locales that claim they invented them but in general “Buffalo” refers to anything that has a hot pepper sauce involved (typically here it is Franks hot sauce mixed with some ratio of butter depending on how spicy you want it). And yes we love wings, burgers, chip dip, etc with hot sauce, and of course the Bills. Love the videos keep up the great work man!

The Russian Bear, in such adverse conditions, gives me the feeling of a 'man cave', somewhere to go to battle the extreme elements and survive. For me, the camo colors further reinforce the notion of a 'man cave' in nature. However, I guess there are also women who would enjoy such an experience, like Survival Lily, AsianGirlinTheWild , etc. So, 'man cave' is probably not the right term ... haha! I think if I was taking my wife or girlfriend to such an extreme location, I'd be taking her to the Russian Bear (less drafty, more cozy).

Seems like a great invention would be a foldable battery powered ceiling fan to blow the heat back down... Less fuel, less stoking the fire, more sleep😁
