In real life, the Russian Kashtan CIWS is a very efficient and redundant defensive weapon system. It actually has a number of surface-to-air missile launchers below the gatling gun. The launchers are not separate weapons system but part of the whole CIWS package. To destroy incoming threats, the missile launchers would actually fire first. The gatling gun would only fire to intercept and destroy incoming threats that have escaped the missile defense system. The whole process is performed automatically by computers. U.S. & Chinesse destroyers have gatling guns that could fire 6,000 rounds of ammo per minute as part of Its CIWS. The gatling gun in the Russian Kashtan system, however, is the only one in the world that could fire more than 10,000 rounds of 30mm ammo per minute.

у нас нет пушки гатлинга,у нас АК-630.The AK-630 is a Soviet and Russian fully automatic naval close-in weapon system based on a six-barreled 30 mm rotary cannon. In "630", "6" means 6 barrels and "30" means 30 mm. It is mounted in an enclosed automatic turret and directed by MR-123 radar and television detection and tracking. The system's primary purpose is defense against anti-ship missiles and other precision guided weapons. However it can also be employed against fixed or rotary wing aircraft, ships and other small craft, coastal targets, and floating mines. Once operational, this weapon system was rapidly adopted, with up to 8 units installed in every new Soviet warship (from mine-hunters to aircraft carriers), and hundreds produced in total.

@DesiArcy2 жыл бұрын
The U.S. Navy's Phalanx CIWS system has a significantly reduced rate of fire compared to the original aircraft version of the "same" Gatling cannon; it is "only" 3000 rounds per minute in the Block 0 Phalanx, and 4500 rounds per minute in the newer Block 2. The GSh-30K Gatling cannons in the original Kashtan system fires at 4,500 rounds per minute as well, but the system incorporates two guns per mounting instead of one; the upgraded Kashtan-M system fires at 5,000 rounds per minute, again times two guns. As for the Chinese, the Type 730 CIWS they currently deploy has a firing range of 4,200 rounds per minute, although the new Type 1130 system on the new carrier Liaoning reportedly fires at 10,000 rounds per minute from a single gun, albeit an extremely bulky Gatling with eleven barrels.
@meatydeathstar912 жыл бұрын
Also, in real life, regardless of whose system is being used, that many missiles would not have been intercepted. The CIWS and CRAM systems are, like you said, last line of defense and they do not have anywhere close to a 100% kill rate.

@martinsvilands73343 жыл бұрын
@@the_fabulous_p14 Eh, not that I know enough about it but against cruise missiles, CIWS seem efficient. If they can plot the course they'd hit stuff just by sheer volume of fire. And in this case, with the destroyer not being the target and knowing their own ordnance they'd be very efficient against the missiles. Probably not against this many missiles, sure, but the movie logic does take it to an extreme launching them all at once.
@Philippe2008fr3 жыл бұрын
@@martinsvilands7334 Even with a high rate of fire, the missile speed is about 3000 km/h, so the probability of being hit by CIWS bullets must be extremely low. Just to give an example of the difficulty : in WW1, machine guns mounted on planes were firing... right through the turning helix! The bullets were passing through the rotating blades, the speed of the bullet and the speed of the rotor making almost impossible for a bullet to hit the blades. if happened it was just deflecting the bullet (with reinforcement metal placed on the blades to deflect the bullet). So at the speed of a missile, it is just like a bullet is hit by another bullet! Probably Almost impossible
@martinsvilands73343 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would matter too much how fast you're flying towards a brick wall. The intent of CIWS is providing extreme volume of fire (which would generally be achieved by multiple systems firing at the same time) and increasing the statistical likelihood of hitting the target. Russian 3M-51 is 8 meters long and flies at 700m/s which would make it occupy any one space for roughly 1/100th of a second. Kashtan fires 150 (30x165mm) rounds a second at 850m/s- side by side this would be 4.5m line of projectiles but end to end we get a 24.5m rod of destruction which then occupies any one space for roughly 2.8/100 s. Obviously, there's no "rod" but the idea remains, given any one space on the trajectory it is occupied by the missile for 0.01s and 0.028 by a projectile from CIWS With all the missiles moving in from the same direction and moving in a trajectory a Russian ship would be quite familiar with seeing as it's the same ordnance they use, I'd suspect they'd have good success at dealing with the missiles. It's why you need overwhelming prolonged barrage to get through CIWS when they're reloading or repositioning for additional targets or ability to avoid being tracked and engaged at all. The reason CIWS are put on ships is that they're efficient at dealing with anti ship missiles at close range.

Gerard Butler's Captain character definitely understands making a high-risk/reward play in holding back his launch. As the movie stated, if he launched, the world would have seen the US as the aggressors. By waiting he turned it into Russians solving an internal domestic problem. Sorry, Ivan, no war today.

One thing: We see 6 total missiles fired by the Soviet missile launchers. However, counting on both visible and audible detonations from missiles hit by the CIWS, there were at least 9 warheads heading for the Arkansas. Either more missiles were fired just off screen, someone other than the base fired, or this is a flaw.
