This is a video of a 1/350 scale Russian Carrier Strike Group (CSG_ centered on their (only) carrier the Kuznetsov.
The group consists of the Russian carrier, the Kuznetsov which is embarking an air-wing of SU-33s, Mig-29Ks, and SU-25 as well as helicopters for AEW and ASW.
The carrier is strongly protected with its own air defenses, the strongest air defense on any carrier, the nuclear battle cruiser Peter The Great Kirov cruiser which is the most heavily armed class of ships on earth. Originally the Soviets built four of them, but only one is operational (this one) and a second is being modernized. These large ships diplace on the order of 25,000 to 30,000 tons.
it also contains the Varyag a Slava class cruiser displacing 12,5000 tons, a Udaloy II destroyer displacing 9,000 tons which is a very strong multi-role destroyer with strong ASW capabilities, a new Gorshkov frigate displacing 5,400 tons which is the Russians newest surface combatant and the one the intend on haing replace the Udaloy and soremenny destroyers. You can tell by seeing it its strong stealth characteristics and strong VLS outifit.
In addition, the group contains an Oscar II SSGN carrying 20 long range, very powerful anti-shipping missiles, and one of the newest nuclear attack submarines in the Russian inventory, the Yassen. The Yassen class is a mixed SSN/SSGN carrying a number of anti-surface missiles too. They are said to be as strong as the Virginia class.
The troubles the Russians are having are severe economic. In the last ten years they have only been able to produce two of these new frigates and two of the new submarines. They are falling dangerously behind the US Navy and the PLA (Chinese Navy) who are producing new, modern destroyer and submarines as wel as carriers.
The Chinese have just completed their second carrier and are working now on a 3rd and 4th CATOBAR carrier. They also have finished building four cruiser sized modern combatants that play the same role as the Ticonderoga cruiser the US has 22 of.
Nevertheless, the Russian carrier group is an extremely strong carrier strike group. The SU-33s and Mig-29Ks are both very strong, multi-mission aircraft that would pose a threat to any other group if they were able to get off strike against them.
With the US now placing 5th generation stealth strike fighters on their carriers however, this will be harder and harder to do.
Please take a look at the videos of the US Carrier Strike Group and the Chinese Strike group, as well as several other 1/350 scale ship formations I have on this channel.

Thank you. I now CSGs for the US, Russia, China, the U.K.-Royal Navy, the French, the Japanese JMSDF, and am looking for an Indian Vikramaditya and its escorts. The completed ones have all the DDGs, FFGs, the SSNs or SSKs, and in some cases the CGs or CGNs, and in two cases CSGs with two carriers - the US and the Japanese. All of the completed ones are in 1/350, and all of its escorts are in 1/350. The French is 1/400. All of these videos are in this channel. Hope you enjoy them.

Great work Jeff!!! Truly stunnig! Found your webpage were you list your collection, so impressed! Also read the Russians want to build a new aircraft carrier. The problem as you say is they cant build many. Much of their large ship building were in Ukraine as I understand it. Dont know if thats true. I think the chinese bought the hulk of Liaoning from Ukraine as it was built there. Anyway great video realy fun to watch em all and here you explain. Take care and hope more videos come in the future.

The Russians have lost the expertise, both in design/engineering and yard expertise. The Liaoning was the former Russian Varyag that was never finished which the Chinese purchased on the cheap and then completely refit and finished her. (See www.jeffhead.com/redseadragon/varyagtransform.htm) They have since byult a second one very similar to her and are now building a conventionally powered CATOBAR carrier...probably two before they go on and build a couple of nuclear powered ones. After that they will be building ones like the US as the ones they have already built reach their end of life. I expect they will maintain six carriers from that time forward.

Amazing work on the models! Russian military weapons and vessels are so unique to me especially the Kuznetsov-class carrier with the ski jump ramp on it. I think an upgraded version of the carrier would really stand out uniquely among the other carrier classes. Russia may be a bit behind on technology, but their proud, fierce fighting spirit is very admirable, coming from a American boy like me :)

The most deadly strike group on earth sadly soviets did not finish its last carier in the 80s
@JeffHead-IdahoUSA
@JeffHead-IdahoUSA 5 жыл бұрын
I am afraid that this is simply not the case any longer. Still mostly all 1980s technology, and the limitations on the air wing would leave them open to repeated attacks from a Western group like the Nimitz class, the Ford class, the Charles de Gaulle class, and even the new UK QE class. When you have much larger numbers of aircraft that carry larger payloads and now will have 5th generation stealth as well, the Kuznetsov class carrier and its escorts would be outraged and repeated strikes would ultimately cause more and more attrition against them. Admittedly, the long range ASMs carried by the Slava and the Russian battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy are very dangerous, and they have huge numbers of AAW missiles. But their battle management systems are older and weaker than what they would face. We know a lot about this because after the fall of the Soviet Union, many US contractors and military advisors were allowed into Russia to try and help them and what they found was that for the 1980s they were somewhat technologically behind, and by this date they are much further behind. Do not get me wrong. They are powerful, and if they caught any western group napping or making a mistake they would be very dangerous. But they are simply behind now, and their ship building capability now is such that they could not even build a new carrier. They do not have the money, and they have allowed the people who were experienced to grow old, retire, and die without replacing them...so they have a big hill to climb...and they only have the one carrier. That new frigate and new SSn are exceptions in terms of tech. But in ten years they have only built one SSN and two of the FFGs. They simply have allowed their ship building capability to be decimated by their economy. In the time they built one Yasen class SSN, the US has produced 16+ Virginia class. In the time they built the one Admiral Gorshkov FFG, the US has built almost 20 new Burke class DDGs.

@@tamzidkarim9402 You are welcome. It is the Smetlivy, 810 I believe. They did get rid of the RBU-1000s and replace them with Switchblade ASMs on her...but that is all they have been able to do. They did get the last nuclear cruiser updated as they finished her, the Peter the Great. I have a model of her, and for 1990s technology she is still a strong and dangerous ship...but there is just the one...though they are still working on trying to get a second modernized. I think they should perfect the Admiral Gorshkov FFG...it is really a good design, but they only have the one, though the second is launched and still in trials. They wanted her commissioned this next year...five years after she was launched...and put more effort into building 20 or so of them, and do the same for getting several more Yasen SSNs built...they are also a good design, but they really only have one of them serviceable at present. At one time they had 20 of those Kashtin DDGs active, but they only have one left. India still operates four Kashtin-remods that the Russians sold them. They are the Indians Rajput class. They have six ASMs, four of which are the Brahmos supersonic ASMs the Indians built. On the lead ship, the Rajput itself, they even fitted one ballistic nuclear missile, the Dhanush ballistic missile , to it. But they are old now and the Indians are trying themselves to build newer destroyers. The Indians are woefully lacking in project management...but they have nonetheless built three of the Kolkata Class and now launched three of the follow on Visakhapatnam class. Took them forever and they are somewhat under-armed...but the point is, even the Indians have been able to build six new destroyers that have a fairly decent stealthy design, decent engines, and though they only carry 32 AAM missiles, the BArak 8 missile is not a bad one...just far far too few of them. They do carry 16 of the supersonic Brahmos ASMs though, and that is a decent and dangerous loadout. Sad day for the Bear when the Russians have gone over 25 years without building a new DDG, and the Indians have been able to put out six.
@tamzidkarim9402

@@JeffHead-IdahoUSA Ya you'r right. Maybe mainly due to their economy or they have simply prioritized the other 4 branches of their armed forces. While focusing more on developing newer SAM's and AShCM's like the one you are mentioning, the Indo russian Joint Venture Brahmos and their own variant P 800 Oniks (export designation Yakhont and NATO designation SS-N-26 Strobile) and other weapon systems. I have also seen a Model of their Future DDG whice is said that, will be nuclear powered also and going to replace their Salva class guided missile Cruisers and propably the Kirov class Battle Cruiser also. But I dont think the work on it have started yet.

There is no 1/350 scale French group. I did have a 1/400 scale group and the Charles de Gaulle was a good kit. But the most modern 1/400 scale escorts were Lafayette FFGs, and it ended up not being what I really wanted. I ended up selling the entire group. I hope some day one of the major companies puts out 1/350 scale vessels...Charles de Gaulle, Horizon DDGs, and FREMM FFGs. I would gladly build and display sch a group if those kits were available.
