The "short forms" are diminutive forms, making each formal name less formal. Vladimir is formal, whole Volodya is informal. Vova is an even shorter version, but Volodya (Володя). You listed all of my family members, lol. And everyone already said it, but Юлия is formal, while Юля is informal. Anywho, great job. I enjoy your videos!

How Alexander becomes Саша: in earlier ages this name in Russian had full "tender forms" like "Алексаня" or "Алексаша" and later it's just "Саня" or "Саша". That's it, no big deal.

To understand short forms you have to understand one simple thing about russian word changing: russian word has "root" and suffixes, so even in names russian mind is trying to found "root" to make different forms out of it. That's it.

I would say that the "short" names aren't so much about shortening as they are about being informal. There are names like Сережа and Виталик that are not shorter than the original. I would never call a person I just met Виталик unless I knew them or was introduced in an informal setting and it would be considered impolite if I did.

Well, Юлия - Юля. I cannot tell, for example, my TEACHER: "Good morning, YUL'A". I am younger OR / AND I am a student of my teacher. As if I talking without respect to someone, who smarter, maybe elder and teach me. If my teacher younger, than me or the same age, anyway i say YULIA, not YUL'A. Yulia - Юлия long version, for strangers, teachers etc. which you can saw in our passport or drive card. Often you should say it with last name (named by father, "otchestvo, отчество), like: Yulia Viktorovna Yul'a Юля - short, for friends, family and maybe some coworkers. And it will be veeery strange, if you say Yul'a Viktorovna.

Chris, first of all, you do a great job because Russian names are a big mess sometimes even for Russians. And you your explanations are as logical as they can be and very clear. On the other hand, there are still some letters which can be pronounced more authentic. In the name “Denis”the first syllable sounds like “di”, not “de”. It may also sound like the first sound in word “yellow” or “Yeah!” Names such as Natasha, Sasha, Dasha have a consonant which is a little different from American “sh”. Try to put your tongue a little lower, not behind the upper teeth but between the open jaws and you’ll get it. Юлия has the short form Юля. The same rule with Tatiana. And Vlad is not always Vladislav, sometimes it is an independent name. There’s also one quite common Russian name that you might find interesting. It’s Sergey, stress on the second syllable. First of all, if you mispronounce it, this may sound as “sir gay” so be careful, in the first syllable it is “ye” sound, not “e” or /i/. Another fun fact is despite short form of it is Seryozha, teens and men prefer to be called “Seriy” which means “gray”.

Some of names you pronounce very good, some of them not :) In my opinion you put to much effort in pronouncing some russian names and words. It makes them sound much rudder then they usually are in russian. Many of them sound softer :) Just information to consider :) PS: You shuld never use "short names" to strangers or in some oficial conversation. That's extremly impolite! And be very careful using variations like Anechka, Vanechka, etc. In most situations it's inappropriate :)

Actually Егор might sound a little bit scary to english speakers, because it sounds like "Yeah, gore".

For those Americans who do not understand that Russian names can be read in different ways. For example, Nikolai is the full name (in polite form), and Kolya is the same name, only in colloquial form. Likewise with the rest. Pavel - Pasha, Daniil - Danya, Dmitry - Dima and so on. Usually in films from America, Russian characters are called Nikolai, Viktors, and this is a little annoying. I'm from Russia by the way.
