Traveling around the Arkhangelsk region we visited several ancient villages among which Kimzha and Kiltsa are especially memorable. Due to the remoteness from civilization both villages have preserved the wonderful world of Russian antiquity and originality.
The main attractions of Kimzha are two stolbovka mills - the northernmost preserved mills in Russia.
Kiltsa is smaller than Kimzha - about 20 residents live in it permanently during the winter season. In summer it's not possible to reach Kiltsa by car due to the lack of normal roads - only by river. The houses in Kiltsa are real monuments of wooden architecture with carved balconies and facades.
All the huts are 100-150 years old. It's not the first time I've been amazed by these giant huts while traveling around the Arkhangelsk region. It is noteworthy that most of the wooden houses of the Russian North are giant six-walls, whose structural basis consists of six capital walls - two are perpendicular to the street, and four parallel. It's great that there are still places where you can still touch a living piece of history because who knows how long these houses have remained.
Traveling around Pomor places along the Mezen River, we met a large number of votive crosses of various types. These are crosses that the Pomors put up according to a vow or promise given to God in gratitude for good or as a sign of some important event in life. Most often such vows were made upon returning alive from dangerous marine fisheries. Not far from Kimzha we managed to see one of the most famous Mezen crosses, installed in 1887 by merchant Savvin on the bank of the Mezen river as a sign of salvation in a storm.
