@BumDandy-jb1ml Really? The qualities I mentioned seemed readily apparent to me. Maybe because I was a HS teacher for many years and have a degree in psychology. A surprising number of folks are functionally illiterate. And they have the most elaborate ways of hiding it from people. Enterprising American business Denny's restaurants cornered the market by having a photo of every dish listed on their menus.

"Heard it thru the grapevine" is in reference to how way back in the day (*before we got spoiled by our technology these days, lol*) there used to be operators that would direct peoples calls rather than just dialing a number yourself. . . You would pick up your phone and automatically be on the line with an operator, and one operator could have multiple phonelines/ people/households etc that they were overseeing. It resembled a grape vine with all the wires from here to there and crossed back this way etc etc. Well, say you call to talk to someone and tell them some good ole gossip just for somebody else to be eavesdropping on your call and all the juicy deets. Lmao. So, thus they heard it thru the grapevine.

The depression in this place is on an entirely different level 😅 you should check out the book called a hangman’s diary it’s basically a private diary written by a an executioner hundreds of years ago it goes in to great detail of the execution methods used at that time. Also the book crime and punish is very interesting if your into medieval torture methods and how we got where we are today with modern prison systems
@The_Prince_Of_Crows
@The_Prince_Of_Crows 4 ай бұрын
That sounds interesting but being that most people were illiterate and especially someone like an executioner you have to wonder was this specifically written to deter crime with horror stories. By putting the details out into public people had something to fear and a good reason to stay away from trouble. I could be wrong but it seems odd for the time. I guess it depends on the exact date.

Thieves in law are similar to shot callers in USA, highest criminal rank in Russia. This video is old and that time criminal traditions were more alive then now. You had black prisons ruled by thieves and criminal authorities (blatnyje) and red prisons led by prison administration with help of trustees. And now more and more prisons are red. But anyways Russia had deep criminal world traditions, very romanticized and very far going into everyday russian life. Very interesting topic, keep it up!

Yes, that was called the BRAZEN BULL. It was created for a Roman Emperor by a skilled sculptor. He presented it to the Emperor, and he wanted to see how it worked so he ordered his men to seize the sculptor and put him in it. The Emperor was pleased and did not allow the whole process to be completed. So they pulled the sculptor out and then threw him off of a mountain top.

"Heard it through the grapevine" originally was a civil war(1861-65) saying that referred to the telegraph wires and poles that looked like a grapevine. Rumors were often spread through the telegraph back then. Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR) recorded the song that everyone knows in 1970 but Gladys Knight and the Pips originally recorded it in 1966. Marvin Gaye also covered it in 1968.

In 1918 Russia began to implement their draconian GULAG system. In the 1930’s, the rural Kulak’s were targeted as a means to fund the Industrial Revolution. There is a great 3 part doc on KZfaq about this. Essentially 20,000,000+ were murdered and millions more imprisoned for being an “enemy of the state”. The 1st Amendment in America is something that people take for granted at times.

New KZfaq idea for you. Singing covers of the prison songs. I saw one rap/ freestyle years ago. Pen tapping, where a black guy was singing about the guards locking him up and throwing away the key... Could never find it again but it was legit really good. If anyone has sauce please post it. "They locked me up and threw away the key.." Only thing I can remember. Good luck internet.

You'll find studying Russian organized crime interesting. Thief-in-law is one who conforms to the thief's code which is more hardcore than Western equivalents and makes one truly an "outlaw" in the correct meaning of that term.

brazen bull. The inventor, Perillos of Athens, presented it to the ruler of Sicily iirc, Phalaris, who was so impressed with it he ordered Perillos to be the first to be executed by it to demonstrate it. Damn. instant karma I guess. Don't worry though, Phalaris ended up in it too eventually.

Man USSR used to drop prisoners off on isolated islands, middle of Siberia, no food, not anything, but a boot in the ass as they'd toss you off the boat and leave, lot of Donner Party action.

Thats called Brazen Bull, it was a life sized bronze bull that was hollow so a man would fit inside, there would be a fire set underneath it and slowly the bronze would heat up until the man inside was essentially steamed to death, and the steam would blow through the nose which was purposely designed to make a loud horn sound, thats when you know the man inside is dead. They had some gruesome creative ways to execute people back in ancient times.

Brass bull, it's called the brazen bull. The horn was for the smoke and the screams. You were cooked alive in it.
