“The main thing is fear, that if you retreat or disobey orders, you just get shot.”
Russian soldiers are getting severely ill with “mouse fever” which Russian command is ignoring as the military runs on “a brutal regime”, says transatlantic security expert, Edward Lucas.

The US army suffered a significant number of casualties from Hanta's fever in Korea. They had specific field hospitals for cases and even started to think it was a Communist bio-weapon. Turns out it was just an endemic disease that usually didn't jump to humans because it was found in rural areas with very few people. But putting thousands of soldiers into unhygienic field conditions and they really suffered.

I wonder if this is a form of Hantavirus. Its endemic in Russian mouse populations and is potential fatal in humans causing hemorrhagic fever (like Ebola) and respiratory distress. The reports of bleeding eyes supports this. So a potentially fatal problem for the Russians living in rodent infested trenches.

Sounds like it, the symptoms match and there are six different strains endemic to Europe. edit: As other's have pointed out it could be leptospirosis. So probably calling it 'mystery mouse disease' was the right call until we know for sure.

It's not mysterious, it's hantavirus, carried by mice and some other animals, and there are A LOT of mice in trenches, it's just that Ukrainians are not hit by such issues as badly as Russians, because Ukrainians got better hygiene norms, better supplies and even rotation. "Cherry on top" - hantavirus can have up to 60% mortality rate, and may cause kidney issues even if one survives.

@@greenc1088 They feel safe inside a trench and are well taken care of. There are some beautiful pictures and stories online, for example: a cat named Coke was rescued from the Coke Plant in Avdiivka, and taken in by the unit that found them. Coke's owner told the Kyiv Post that "he has been in service for almost a year now, and we have made him a member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' feline intelligence. We even made him a badge." Coke apparently has some talent for warning soldiers of incoming Russian artillery. That's pretty useful in a war like the one in Ukraine, where artillery battles have played a dominant role in the fighting. "Coke seems to be able to sense enemy shelling before it starts and begins to meow, just like an air raid warning. In our experience, many of our animals can sense the approach of artillery strikes," his owner said.

So far the front who is dealing with this is Kup'yans'k. I'm not sure but I don't think it's spread far outside of the Kup'yans'k lines into the larger Kharkiv AO. The problem for the Russians AND the Ukrainians is that this disease is cross-zoonotic. It can cross physical lines of combat as leptospirosis did in World War 1, plaguing the German Army and then one Year later becoming an outbreak in the British Army.

The morale issues doesn't need to lead to deserting, mutiny or surrender. It just needs to lead to the issues we've been seeing since the start, ineffective logistics, lack of cooperation within units and across different battalions, infighting across ethnic and social class groups, mistrust within the chain of command leading to selectively following orders etc. There are so many problems that are exasperated by low morale and the reasons for it that would otherwise be smoothed out over time. @@drefhill Ukraine is fighting the "second best military in the world" to a standstill and have regained over half the land Russia stole in its invasion. The Russian army is worse than anyone thought. I doubt Putin would have invaded if he'd known half his ammo dumps had already been emptied out and sold by corrupt oligarchs. But it turns out they only have two tactics: 1) terror bomb cities in hopes that it will break resolve instead of creating common cause among all Ukrainians even those who used to want to be in Russia, 2) throwing meat-waves of troops they could care less about at an enemy hoping the enemy will run out of bullets before Russia runs out of meat. They're barely competent as far as military's go. They claim to be fighting NATO but so far Russia has lost 300,000 troops and NATO has lost zero. They haven't even entered the fight Putin tried to pick with them. All they're doing is sending weapons. Meanwhile, Putin now has more NATO on his border than he had before because he successfully convinced Finland that the only way to stop Russia from invading them *again* is to join a larger defensive alliance. Oopsie. I guess Putin is as much a Paper Bear as his Rust Army.

@SpinBuster2024
@SpinBuster2024 6 ай бұрын
The west did provide even more weapons than everyone thought were necessary, but its not enough. According to Kyiv Post Zaluzniy told Pentagon that to drive Russians out he needs 17 million artillery shells and $350B - $400B in forces and funds. That is more shells than collective west, including US, could produce in the next 5 years and three times more money than Ukrainian yearly GDP. Just to put in perspective, United States is planning to increase production of artillery shells to only 100000/month by the 2025... Other weapons systems are being used up at the same, unsustainable rate. Considering this, Ukraine CANNOT win this war, because the whole west put together can not provide, what is required for to happen. Thus, any additional weapons supplied to them will only result in additional deaths, prolonging the conflict, with zero impact on the outcome. Hundreds of thousands more deaths on both sides, nothing else. Continuing sending weapons that way is nothing short of war crime on its own.

Who had time to plant grain this year? No Ukrainian. So the fields are left to "fallow" for a year or two. The mice have always been there. This is THEIR HOME. Always has been. There never was a bumper crop these past season because of the war the fields were battlegrounds so no crop planting. There is no excess food supply. Australia had it a couple years back...with no place to store the grain so they created huge piles of grain (dumps) that was tarped over and a water trench was dug around it to keep out the mice. That worked until it was loaded onto trains for ships for markets. Mice don't swim & eyesight is not that good. No wars in Australia.

From what I have seen in many videos and articles form around the front lines in the ongoing conflict, the Russians have HORRIFYINGLY bad hygiene, in and around their trench lines. This adds to the rodent infestation, along with the natural movement of rodents to warmer, drier areas during cold months. With the poor logistical problems the Russians are having in provisioning their troops, there is a hazard in weakening their troops immune systems due to poor diet, as you need more nutrition and calories when it's cold to function normally. Mix rodent-borne diseases with weakened immune systems, and you get soldiers falling ill due to diseases they would otherwise shrug off or be only inconvenienced by. I see a heavy investment in rat terriers in their future.

I can survive without a shower for several months. That is not a problem. In the winter one tends to sweat less.

In 1917 the Russian army was being defeated everywhere, that’s why they mutinied, so far that hasn’t happened yet here

Well putin has a much better stranglehold in the government and military than the late czar did. According to history, czar Nicholas was seen by his people as an out touch nepobaby. Truth is he actually cared and given a damn about his people but was surrounded by the most corrupt and incompetent officials that gave him such terrible advice that he looked bad on the international stage as well. Putin on the otherhand has a stranglehold on public information and enough influential people to keep the public suppressed. Also he still has a rabid, trumpesque base that can keep the others at bay sadly. A fiasco like this would have caused political meltdown in any western nation, but for Russia they need much more, including a famine to cause a breakdown.

I'm sure the guest speaker knows that Russia's invasion of Ukraine was in February of 2022, and not in 2021 as he keeps stating.

The one good thing that has come out of this is a wake up call for European nations that have not been spending enough on defence....Now they will have to do that and pretty quickly.....It has also revealed which countries we cannot rely on....Hungary being one very clear example....

Hungary used to be PART OF THE USSR. Seems their leader wants to join again. A SWIFT KICK OUT & he can do that"on his own" Majority of Hungarians voted to join the EU. Which means a minority wanted to stay with USSR. Google it....I don't have to chew it for you, do I.?
