One of the little known collaborationist SS units during WWII was the Kaminski Brigade consisting of Russians. They earned a terrible reputation for murder and violence against civilian populations on the Eastern Front and a during the Warsaw Uprising.
Dr. Mark Felton is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. @@spectreandromedus8661 I believe it's kind of like the 2022 Russo-Ukraine War. The Russians took heavy losses marching on Kyiv, so they took their (collective?) anger out on the local civilians. They arrived with one mindset and left with another... I suppose the question is, did they become psychos due to battle or was it a predisposition due to their societal values? 🤔

Dirlewanger was not only a rapist, super alcoholic , murderer, and overall lover of all kinds of violence, he was even "allegedly" into necrophilia. These Kaminski characters were probably cut from the same baleful cloth.

You’re a moron. The German forces were compromised of honorable men. At least, the percentage of honorable men within the German ranks during the Second World War was the highest amongst any of the nations involved in the conflict. There were atrocities on all sides. Especially amongst the Soviet and Japanese ranks. People immediately associate all German soldiers in the war with death camps and mass genocide, even though less than 1% of 1% of the troops were even aware of any such activities, let alone actively partook in them. But hey, if you want to frame the entire war through the lens of post-war American propaganda mixed in with denazification and Israeli propaganda than go ahead I guess…

I forget where I read it but a contributing factor to Kaminski getting the axe was his unit started going after German nurses at Warsaw as well.

Mark Felton is not a KZfaqr, he is a professional mini-documentary producer/writer/director/editor and everything else he does. I believe the standards of these kinds of “videos” are set by mr. Felton. God knows how many ppl try to make these videos and fall far short

This is the future, I watch what I want to watch instantly, he is a KZfaqr or I would have never heard of him. Yeah since then I have noticed him in documentary’s with a fact here and there. I think he’s brilliant and I trust his words, he’s a great man, but thank god he’s on KZfaq.

He isn't much different than many other History Tubers, I mean beyond the channels specifically for none enthusiast. Simple History for example doesn't count as a proper History Tube Channel, in my opinion of course... among other examples. There are a number of proper channels who are either History teachers, or Historians themselves, and in all respects if you're researching history and producing even if it's content on youtube, which would make you a youtuber still even if you're a writer, or historian on top of that. Publishing content on youtube as an individual makes you a youtuber regardless of what you do outside of youtube. History Hustle for example is a History Teacher, so is the Metatron. Aviation History Visualized has published more than one book thus far, so he is more than just a youtuber as well. TIKHistory might as well start publishing his content proper, because boy I'd love to see him start getting books published, some of his videos might as well be called audio books with tons of citations and proper references. That being said, many history focused youtube channels just regurgitate information which doesn't help the discussion and progression of our understanding of history which is fine/dandy but that isn't really what a historian does in my opinion. As the job of a historian is to discover history, find things other historians might of missed or overlooked, and help make history more and more accurate over time, not just regurgitate. This is why I welcome when a channel post all the sources they used and even proper citations, even if you may not agree with their conclusions.

According to WikiPedia this happened to Kaminski: Heinrich Himmler used the misconduct of the Warsaw group as a pretext for having Kaminski and his leadership executed after trial by court martial in Litzmannstadt (Łódź). They were tried for stealing the property of the Reich, as the stolen property was to have been delivered to Himmler, but Kaminski and his men had attempted to keep it for themselves.Also executed with Kaminski was brigade chief-of-staff Waffen-Obersturmbannführer Ilya Shavykin. The men of the brigade were given the false explanation that Kaminski had been killed by Polish partisans. When Kaminski's men rejected this explanation, the Gestapo took Kaminski's car, pushed it into a ditch, shot it up with a machine gun, and smeared goose blood all over it, as evidence. The demoralized unit was soon moved out of town and stationed to the north, far from any partisan activity. The death of Kaminski and the unreliability of his troops as a combat unit brought the plans to expand the Kaminski Brigade to a division to an end. After Kaminski's death, his unit was placed under the command of SS-Brigadeführer and Generalmajor der Polizei Christoph Diehm

@@Superknullisch The Doc mentions this as one of the possibilities but specifically says it is unclear. The only reference for that entire section is a single book by a Polish historian. Considering the love of the Germans for bureaucracy I find that odd that the book's contents have not been corroborated elsewhere, or the book even translated into English. I'd say leave it at unclear.

It wasn't their brutality, that was "fine", it was the inability of the "unit" to maintain discipline and control its "troops". These were the worst of the worst of former Soviets the Germans could scrape together.

@@drott150 This is like comparing Jim Brown with Frank Gore. The latter has many more yards, but needed twice as long as the former to get them. Not many would credibly argue that Gore was the better player. The NKVD, Red Guard, KGB, Kmer Rouge - all were brutal, disgusting and deserving of our disdain. But none approached the SS (1942-44 especially) in peak barbarism.

@@MBBurchette I don't know a single thing about Frank Gore or Jim Brown, other than I vaguely remember Jim Brown because he was in _The Dirty Dozen._ But you, stuck in a brain dead sports bubble, thinks everyone likes and knows about the same inane things you do, which are designed to distract ordinary people away from the real "sports game" going on in their lives. "Peak barbarism" as you call it, comes down to body count. Who killed more? If you add up the body count of communism, especially spread out over many decades amongst many nations and cultures, it *absolutely dwarfs* the SS and all other comers hands down. I noticed something upon second viewing. I believe that the picture at 1:58 was actually taken when Wheremaht and Red Army cooperated in conquering the Polish Republic in 1939. It appears that at least one of the Soviet soldiers (the tankist on the right) didn't feel particularly comfortable with his new, temporary German allies.

4 of my relatives were in the Polish army! Captured by the Russians,prisoners in Siberia, only 2 returned,Tomaz Lulek,and Anthony Lulek,my uncle Tomaz would always sing the Polish anthem at our family reunions,God bless his soul,and all who fought for peace and justice!

I found out a few of the blokes at work were avid Mark Felton fans by mentioning one of his videos (British involvement in Vietnam after the Japanese surrender) we all agreed he's one of the best youtubers and historians on the subject. These kind of documentaries are sorely needed in today's world given the amount of junk pumped out by more traditional, mainstream media outlets - they're effectively stupefying the population.

Whether you are German or Italian, it is your choice. You seem to think about human beings in biological terms. In other words, you essentialise what is existential.

@@jamestaylor7710 Azov Battalion is a Nazi paramilitary group in Ukraine, their insignia is a wolfsangel- swastika combo, they have been inducted into the Ukranian military recently and most of the prominent images of fighters in Ukraine, usually wearing the yellow armbands are of them. They are simply the latest manifestation of Nazism in Ukraine, tracing back to Stepan Bandera, who has a statue and a street in mariupol if I'm not mistaken

At the War's end The Latvian SS were interned in Neuengamme Concentration Camp, South of Hamburg. Most of them came to ENGLAND.

I recall that one of the "Russian" units who fought for the Germans surrendered en mass to the British in 1945. These were later handed over to the Russians and the British troops reported that many of the prisoners were shot before the British guards had left.

*What Kaminski's Brigade of murderers and maniacs were doing in Warsaw, during the Polish Uprising in that city .... Germans were observing from the side. Because of the brutal methods of killing innocent civilian Poles by the Kaminski's "soldiers" .... some German officers couldn't stan it and they were puking beside the curbs of the streets !!!! :o(* That is of what my Godmother told me, I remember. She was a teenage girl, and she survived the Warsaw Uprising on the District of Wola, where the most killings of the Polish civillians took place at the start of the Uprising.

Excellent short video, Dr Felton! Thank you for distinguishing the ROA from the RONA--many historians lump the together (much like the German Nazi's did in the end). General Vlasov was no Kaminski, and Kaminski was no Vlasov in the theater of battle imho. Kaminski was no better than Oskar Dirlewanger. Vlasov one can argue felt betrayed By Stalin, and upon his capture, sought to be of use to the German Nazi's for his homeland. Vlasov is a tragic figure who betrayed the USSR; Kaminski has no redeeming features in his tale as an utter villain.

@@Oberkommando depends on local German treatment. As Slavs they were of inferior blood and SS in particular treated Ukrainian roughly. One European Scale war game had option to treat Ukrainian better creating a great number of German Ukrainian troops. This did not occur due to local German oppression. So luckily in your example they did not receive the negative treatment to change their minds. I assume biggest amount of bad treatment was anyone wanting any say in how local government ran.

It was encouraged. In early 1941 Wehrmacht Chief of Staff Wilhelm Keitel issued the Barbarossa Order, the first of four "criminal orders" pertaining to the pending invasion of the Soviet Union that gave permission to German soldiers to commit war crimes. The Barbarossa Order explicitly told German commanders that persons suspected of being a partisan, or supporting partisan activities, were not the responsibility of civilian or military justice systems, but instead were the responsibility of unit commanders whose forces had taken these persons into custody. Combined with another subsequent order that exempted German soldiers from military court prosecution for murder, assault and robbery against USSR citizens, and it granted carte blanche to torture, maim and murder anyone suspected partisan on the commander's whim.

Not necessarily, there were legitimate large partisan movements that did a lot of damage to German logistics. Often actual fighting took place that could warrant a well earned medal, it wasn’t all arresting civilians and shooting kiddies, although this did sadly happen too.

The Allies returned all Soviet nationals hwho were in Europe to the Soviet Union, the Soviets even convinced the Allies to repatriate the "White Russians" who left Russia during the Russian Civil war. Many were killed, and one of the main reasons was that the Soviet leadership didn't want people in the Soviet Union to find our that quality of life in Europe was much better than in the Soviet Union, so they had to liquidate anyone who might spread the word.

White emigration was never a subject of any actions regarding Nazi collaboration. With the exception of those directly participating in collaboration (Krasnov being the most famous example), White emigration remained where it was. Many assisted the Allies, some served in Western armies, some have aided the Resistance, and so on. The majority of White emigration did not get affected in any way. However, there were times before the war when White emigrants were either lured to USSR by false promises of amnesty, or where forcibly deported back to Russia by some nations (including the US, sometimes), and in those cases, they faced quick reprisal from the Soviets as traitors to the people.

The Kaminsky Brigade was not an SS formation and was composed mostly of ethnic Belorussians, not Russians. It was less a military unit than a marauding horde.

Kaminski Brigade was just the nickname of the Waffen-Sturmbrigade der SS "RONA". They recruited from different soviet territories.
