Who knew that weaponized dolphins would be one of the more realistic things to be depicted in C&C Red Alert 2?

As usual, a very interesting chat. The slide listing the swimming speed of different mammals reminded me of a US navy research project circa 1970. Some enterprising naval architect calculated an energy balance between the theoretical resistance of a dolphin (assuming the skin was rigid) versus the available energy in the daily ration of fish the dolphin typically eats. The results were that by over a factor of two, a dolphin should have insufficient energy to reach a fixed destination. The theory was that the dolphin skin was compliant with the water interface. This has the effect of delaying the transition of laminar flow to turbulent flow until much further aft than would be predicted by classic inelastic surface theory. So the goal became to develop a man made skin that could be attached to torpedoes to increase range. The picture I saw was a sandwich of thin flexible polyethelene skins with many small plastic columns or studs to fix the correct thickness. The interstitual volume was filled with a viscous fluid. It didn't work - at least not very well. This project was referenced in the book "The Science of Yachts, Wind, and Water" by H. F. Kay. The research was done at David Taylor Model Basin.

I heard about one of these animals finding it’s way to a harbor in Norway or something like that and it had a harness on it. It was friendly to people and obviously relied on people to get food. It was so bad the town had to tell people to stop feeding it.

I think that "friends of the dolphin" would be much more interested in capturing and interrogating the diver than throwing a grenade at him.

I remember back in the late '90s there was a Navy EOD detachment along with their Dolphins (Mark V or Mark VII, I forget which) training in and around Port Aransas/Aransas Pass,Texas. They were really cool. I got to hang around with them a little bit and even got a couple of their unit t-shirts.

Very informative, especially for someone like myself who had no knowledge of the use of marine mammals in this environment. If you feel so inclined I'm sure you could become a cruise ship lecturer as this type of presentation would be ideal and of great interest to cruise ship passengers.

15:52 I remember reading this in an old book, "Behind the Dolphin's Smile". It was written by one of the dolphin trainers on the old show, Flipper, to raise awareness on how Dolphins and other marine mammals are being captured and forced to live inside small tanks.

Dolphins trained to remove mouthpieces from divers 16:00 sound like an area denial weapon. If they were deployed to an enemy harbor, they'd force divers out of the water till dealt with, it'd be hard to tell who sent them, and harming them might create bad PR.

@H I Sutton Hi, first time viewing of your video, excellent IMO. Quick question for you please: In your opinion, was the misfiring of the Silex missile from Ladny in 2015 at Sevastopol, in danger of hitting the dolphin pen, if it was there at the time? I don’t have all my facts straight so please forgive me if this is a really stupid question. It is not so easy to get any real information about the basic details of the event from my cursory searches. Most of the articles I read didn’t even name the ship from that event, and many articles use pictures of this misfire, as embedded images for completely unrelated Russian warship stories.. Including articles titled roughly as “successful Russian cruise missile launch”.. Wow lol. Also, you mentioned the dolphin compressed air gun as delivering compressed air to the target and killing them.. I could be wrong, but that sounds gruesome, and I’d imagine compressed air refers to the me having isn of firing a projectile at the target diver rather than firing a projectile that then delivers compressed air. Again forgive me if I completely misunderstand the way that you are wording it, but it seems there may have been confusion.

This whole video feels like April fools joke. I know it is not, but it really feels like one. I even dive, and I still wanted to giggle at the idea of doplhin giving me a buoye under water.

If the bouy pulls the diver up fast, that could be lethal itself.

Also, that Beluga whale deserting, chosing peace and retrieving people's phoned is a hero. Humans should take note.

Is there really much of a future for these types of programs when underwater drones have become so accessible to the major military powers? Especially for harbor defense we have the sonar tools to detect if something has passed through, at that point it's only a matter of interception.

The US Navy uses them for harbor control/security of ships. They are trained to detect and alert trainers of any divers or mines that might have been deployed. We used to see them after they'd escort the Harry S. Truman out of Norfolk and other places, they'd show themselves and jump out of the water and play in the wake. You missed the Sea Lions there too. They are kinda fat, so they don't work as hard or as much as the dolphins. The dolphins are like happy toddlers running around for fun.

I cannot imagine who came up with a swim speed of 16 knots for a dolphin, but I know for a fact that their actual top speed is certainly several times that. Russian media released illustrations on how the Kerch bridge was defended. And among all defense measures such as x-ray, machines, air defense batteries, boats and divers there were also depicted dolphins. If this is correct we would expect to find dolphin pens close to the Kerch bridge, as well.

Defecting Belugas? Outstanding. Any marine mammal defense program can easily be defeated by any underwater submarine vehicle emitting sounds and calls of killer whales eating dolphins/seals. The dolphins/seals will clear out in a hurry. Of course, anti-sub-warfare makes such missions challenging, but would be used a prelude to deploying divers.

The U.S. Navy was test this idea back in the late 50’s early 60’s training dolphins to find torpedos and retrieve other underwater ordinance.

There must be at least some counter measures against these animals??? I can imagine a little underwater-speaker sending out painful sounds that chase them away. As the divers ear drums are not in direct contact with the sea water, they would not be damaged by this. An alternative solution could be a speaker system (or several) playing the very typical sounds of a swimming diver, and drop that system around before entering the "operation zone"???

I just looked at satellite imagery of a few Russian naval bases and see every now and then like 15 circles of black tubing floating in the water tied together with buoys and there’s always a small boat with them, is that related or if not what the hell is it? It’s at most Russian naval bases
