The good thing with this type of design is the ability of buying big amounts of a specific product, just by picking a box, instead of picking the product one by one. I remember when Lidl came in Greece, it was the only supermarket where customers were exiting with boxes.

In the US (Wisconsin) I don't think I've ever seen staff sitting in chairs at the checkout. I usually go to several different stores each week. One is mostly organic so it has the most organic choices & large selection of good supplements & has a fresh juice & coffee bar, sandwiches, pizza & has a lunch area to eat your lunch in. Meijer is a large supermarket w/ food, household goods, T.V.'s, technical things, a pharmacy, most anything you want for the week & has the lowest prices on everything in this large store. But there are a couple other grocery stores that are closer to me so I tend to go to those as well. Thanks for another great video, Russell!!

When I worked as a cashier in stores, we weren't allowed to sit down. The cashiers in other countries are lucky. It seems like a small store. Is it meant for people in the area to shop at while they are at work or to just buy a few things? I do enjoy seeing way-of-life videos from other countries like this. Since I used to work in grocery stores, it gives me something to relate to. Thank you for posting videos like these!

The reason why people avoid self-service counters is simple: they are awfully slow if you have lots of small purchases. First, you have to scan every small pack individually: take it from the basket, scan it, lay it on the scale, wait till the machine weighs it and confirms it has the correct weight. E.g., you take a dozen pouches of wet food for you cat; you're going to scan it for several minutes. Also, some goods have special codes you have to scan. E.g., for milk and milk products you have to scan a rectangular matrix code, not the usual bar code on the package. This makes scanning even slower. Second, in case of any error the machine goes into "wait for an attendant" mode. You scanned an alcoholic beverage? Wait for an attendant to confirm your age. You bought a pen that's too light to be registered by the counter's built-in scale? Wait for an attendant to confirm. You accidentally swiped your purchase twice? You know the drill. And yes, the attendant may be right near, or they might be somewhere on the other side of the store. In any case, you may spend lots of time struggling with the equipment and waiting for the staff to assist. Much more than when you're standing in the line.

I am from the West Coast (Oregon) in the United States, we do not have Aldi here. I go to 2 to 3 grocery stores, trying to keep my grocery bill down. I would absolutely shop there. Our grocery stores at 3:00pm would be fairly busy. Most people shop for the week or 2 weeks and occasionally go in between for milk or fresh veggies. So I find it very interesting how some countries shop every day for dinner, perhaps we have more storage in our refrigerator and cabinets. I love to see the different products. I would love it if you would let us know more prices on more products, it's so very interesting. Thank you for your video!

Thank you for the video! It’s a great one as usual. I like the self check out counters. The way to expedite the process. Not really looking for personal interactions with store employees. My wife likes Aldi. I don’t find it interesting. Trader's Joe's is much better! We buy at any store, including Walmart (their fruits and vegetables are good, I always order cat food from them for delivery), Dollar General for Corona beer; Food City for ham hocks (I like them with beans); Fresh Market and Whole Foods for locally farmed milk, seafood and meats. Very local stores for meat, produce and cheese. Чижик -reminds me a nice movie: не может быть. It’s a great Soviet comedy movie.

From America… the outside looks a bit odd for a grocery store having offices on floors above it. The ramp is quite steep incline hard to go up. Loaf bread is dirt cheap. Could easily live on bread, jar of jam spread, slice cheese. I pretty sure Pepsi & Coke is cheaper in Russia. That 2 Liter bottle was 128 rubles or under $1.40 where in US it is $2.50. I do notice the store is not busy. Would I shop there? Sure… I’d go grab a few things. But would not buy all there.

Sometimes i think its a courtesy to use the self service in smaller shops like a Coop. Late at night in England maybe only one or two people working and if they are busy shelf stacking i will use the self service. In the bigger stores self service is popular to avoid queues if you only have a basket. Nobody uses the scanners you can get to scan items as you put them into a trolley

On my last work trip, my flight from Colorado, USA, to Texas, USA, gave me a Japanese Coke Zero. It was a different type of can and tasted slightly different. I wonder what the taste difference is depending on the country the soda comes from. I know the use of natural sugar is a big difference between Mexico's use of sugar and the USA's use of high fructose corn syrup. The prices look good in Russia, a 20oz soda costs around $2.30 (210rub), but those 1L are $0.85 (78rub) for almost 2x the amount.
