In episode #8 of Roots of Humanity, Drew and Natasha Kurnaeva, a 22 year old vlogger from the Far East of Russia, unpack their thoughts about the war in Ukraine, which started only one week after they filmed a Siberian adventure together, a story that ended with Drew’s detention on the North Korean border. Natasha boldly reveals how she knew as a child that her government was unlike those in other countries, and how fake news in Russia is defined so loosely that it can often mean the truth. From oil production to snowboarding, Soviet architecture to Brittney Griner, Natasha tells Drew why she’s decided to move to Georgia amidst the war, processing her emotions of fear, hope, and anger at the world’s indifference, against the backdrop of her Ukrainian sisters’ suffering and the economic devastation in Moscow versus that in the isolated Far East.

I’ve been intrigued and enchanted with Georgia for a very long time and hope to visit the country myself someday. I’ve been forever fascinated with the personage of Joseph Stalin for many many years now. Have read countless books about him and his life and the culture which bore and gave rise to him. It was really nice to hear Natasha being more open, she is a fascinating person. Just like some of the kids whom I support in the Philippines 🇵🇭, I love to hear them say things like "I am not an idiot". That sense of standing up for yourself, rebelling, arguing with your parents, is the sign of a healthy mind. Despite Natasha in her videos being very open about her vulnerability, she fights on maintaining a healthy mind. I appreciate seeing that.

After all, not only am I a non-Russian (I am from the USA) who is interested in Russia's culture, but I have also been subscribed to this KZfaqr, Natalia Kurnaeva of _Natasha's_ _Adventures,_ since the channel was called "Yeah Russia"! From this video, I learned a bit more about the Russian Far East, including the history of Sakhalin. I also found Natasha's "We are All the Same" message at the end to be quite inspiring! WHOOPS AND BRAVO! Young man -if I may be so bold, thankyou oh so much for interviewing Natasha for me and the whoops business is due to my own personal changes which slowed my attention to the trials of life that lovely Natasha has decided to do. She’s a true spark and all people do have a chance to shine as she is. I’m now 68 although my outlook and dare I be so bold visual age is around the mid 40’s. A few years ago I wanted a new vista and voila I noticed this young Russian Bear standing waist high in a Frozen River?¿!! And I couldn’t let this opportunity slip by so I subscribed and a while later I decided to become a patron on… yes Patreon for Natasha and Real Women, but tonight living in SE England it’s N’s Adventures after writing and worrying for her brilliant future. Keep up the good work, stay a mentor (though her confidence is is fab) and I’ll be writing to her soon. Oh, incidentally I have made the terrible decision to subscribe to you!! Being an an ex-grad in G.D. I know she’ll grow with grace and dignity now I know she’s in safe hands. Liberty and freedom of expression is fundamental to us all. Hugs abound. Cool and I don’t think I’ll do much sleeping tonight. Natasha you are SO honest I and of course I got your message recently, but I never thought it would happen for you so gracefully. I’ve got a new hobby watching 2 spaces at once, now I know you what you meant about a “rainy day.” Cool and I can’t wait for the next episode of Natasha’s Adventures. Bye bye and Poka poka.

Who knows i may have distant relatives who were sent there just for their beliefs. Most escaped/ left before all the crazy conflicts of civil unrest. My ancestors came from what is now eastern Ukraine 🇺🇦 I have been following Natasha for at least a year. She has a fierce love for her country and its people. Many people that leave Russia 🇷🇺 end up going back. The history and culture is so unique. Things had gotten to a place where people felt safe and part of the rest of world 🌎.but the people in power are so rooted in history and political power. Definitely not interested it the needs of the people or rebuilding/ reinventing it's self as a modern political power on the world stage. So sad 😞

I'm very glad that Natasha is safe and getting out of Russia. I started watching her a while ago (found her channel by accident TBH) and have increasingly been worried since I know she was more outspoken and things, especially after Putin being Putin and attacking Ukraine for no reason at all. Also yay shout out to Minnesota lol! It's a really interesting state to live in. Phoenix is an interesting city as well. My mom and her side of the family is there. It's all different than Chicago (which is where I grew up.)

The war in Ukraine didn't start last February. It started in 2014 when the democratically elected Ukrainian government was overthrown by Obama in an illegal coup and replaced with an anti-Russian puppet-client state regime that would go on to commit daily war crimes against ethnic Russians in Donbass, in clear violation of the Minsk agreements! Where was the international community then?! This war would have been avoided by one simple guarantee, for Ukraine to be a neutral nation and not join NATO, which is already a 30-country-strong military alliance knocking on Russia’s doorsteps! Russia’s attack on Ukraine is illegal and unwarranted, but you can not deny that it was the US who provoked this conflict. Did Russia not try diplomacy? Not for days or weeks, but for months and years, since 2014 to be exact!? Was this special military operation necessary for Russia to perhaps avoid an inevitable and inescapable WWlll if the US continue insisting on pushing NATO eastward?!! Isn’t it also exactly what US would have done had Russia done to Canada what US did to Ukraine: pledge hostile military alliance membership; back a coup; pour in weapons used to attack civilians; and thwart diplomacy. What the world needs to do is to negotiate this peacefully and not give in to the US advocating the war and sending more weapons to Ukraine to prolong the pain and suffering! By Johnny Achi

Putin's special operation was for 2 reasons. 1. To stop the Ukrainian nazi Azov army from terrorizing and killing ethnic Russians of the Donbass region since 2014. 2. To stop NATO expansion which was the reason for Azov's attacks. Russia is not there to "take over"Ukraine. They want Ukraine to be neutral, not with NATO on its doorsteps where a missile can be launched and landing in Moscow in 5 minutes. Ukrainian government is extremely corrupt (not the innocent citizens).

May God bless and protect Natasha. I have been following her channel for a few months now, She portrays a common desire for democracy and freedom of expression. She and many other young people in Russia (and elsewhere around the world) represent a universal humanity. We all fervently wish for peace, harmony, goodwill, and mutual cooperation.

Thank You for such a remarkable view into life in Far Eastern Russia. Both of you appeared comfortable and respectful of each other personally and culturally. What a gift you both have in your open world view. I am so worried that the US will become a closed off authoritarian p lace to live. Living in Florida for some time now I see the dramatic change in attitudes toward "Outsiders and people that are "different" from "Real American." It makes me sad to see people embracing a dogmatic.rigid cultish culture here. Glad I found this website.

Natasha has always been very clear about it. If she was looking for a stay in my country and I had a say in it, I'd certainly support her. The main message of NFKRZ has been: "I didn't vote for Putin, so why is it happening to me?".

Cool interview, Drew!! Click-bait title (24:51 - she has _not_ yet fled), but worth it 👍 Questions/comments. 2:30 - what airline has (or, at least, had) a 10-hr flight to Moscow from AZ?? 🤔 14:07 - "5 million" is in the Phoenix _Metro_ area, which is how we tend to count in the US. Not the case in Russia, so the #5 Phoenix is on par with Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg, which are #3 and #4 in Russia 😉 P.S. Impressive editing throughout the podcast!! Most podcasters just let the camera run because "it's for the radio" but your pattern interrupts are like in a top-notch YT video 😲

Thanks Olga for clearing things up! To anwer your reply to my own comment, I'm not very familiar with Drew's overall style and in fact this is the first long video of his that I watched. And based on the only other video of his I watched which is about Liberia (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZqhY9aLqc7cipc.html), I have to say, although I enjoyed his editing, photography, and general positive attitude, the overall imprtession given by the information seems superficial (like, "everything here is modelled after America and everyone here loves the US") and misleadingly optimistic. For example, he said "Liberians are among the poorest people on earth but they are happy", really? The country suffered extensively during the two brutal civil wars and the Ebola outbreak not long ago, there's barely any mentioning on how these affected the society.

A real comparison between the video of Drew and Natasha. In my opinion, Drew over edits, too many quick cuts. Natasha, on the other hand, produces like an educator. You may say talking head but she is able.
