As a swede I can tell you that the ONLY reason we decided to join NATO as well as Finland is that russia decided to start war with a neighbouring country that was peaceful. Do Russians really not understand why a country on Russia's border would want to join NATO after another (non NATO) country on Russia's border was invaded by Russia?? Finns' support for NATO has remained at around 20% for a long time. Moderate fluctuations have always returned to normal. This was the case, for example, after the conquest of Crimea in 2014, when support for NATO rose momentarily. Right after the war started, the percentage rised fastly to 60%, since that it has steadily rised. Currently Finns' support for NATO is between 73% and 76%.

Russian people say they don't understand politics or don't like politics, but what they are really saying is that they don't feel responsible for the actions of their government. Politics is about people. When people disown or ignore politics they become the vegetables of the state. The playthings. As a consequence Putin can do what he wants. Finland hasn't always been neutral - they had to defend themselves from a Russian (USSR) invasion in 1939. Russia (USSR) also invaded Poland in 1939 in a dual assault with Nazi Germany who they had a pact with and were allies with. Russians are not taught any of their own history. That also allows Russians to be ignorant of many aspects of their daily politics. You can then continue to be aggressors against the Western world but be ignorant at the same time.

A LOT of propaganda and unnecessary hate/aggression in media. Especially when started to travel and had deep conversations with different people around europe and baltic countries, I understood that there is always pure lies about situations in russian media, in Finland media was mostly always correct.. Only one thing in that brought a relief - they didn't talk much bad about Finland, ofc own false story of history.. but this is absurd that now they imagine that Finland might be preparing attack to russia🤯 wtf.. that never ever was the plan in this, never ever was in anybody's mind 🤯 we want to protect ourselves from russia so this what happens in Ukraine won't happen to us, why is it so hard to understand just simple will to be safe??? Why russians tend to think that everyone wants to destroy them and that everyone that don't want their land, language and flag are enemies 🤷 can't the countries be just own countries in peace and happiness??? The key historical error was in Putin's idea to equate Russia with the Soviet Union. NATO was primarily a treaty for mutual defense against the Soviets, although there was no mention of the Soviet threat in the actual treaty. When the Soviet Union fell, all that remained was a multinational military force bound by the NATO treaty, subordinate to the UN. For a few years, there was even speculation about creating some sort of connection between NATO and Russia (this was also a time when most of the former Soviet-dominated eastern European states actually acceded to NATO). But once Putin came into power and superimposed his dream of a Putinist empire over the old Soviet one, all that stopped. He is retracing the steps of Stalin et al., choosing authoritarian, fascist-style isolation over any kind of integration with Europe and the rest of the world. Things could have gone a much better way, but here we are back in the pre-WWII era.

He is retracing the steps of Stalin et al., choosing authoritarian, fascist-style isolation over any kind of integration with Europe and the rest of the world" This is a barrel full of dumb. Where does one even begin? Putin had his hand outstretched to the west for the last decade. He desired economic integration, which the west was not interested in. The west wanted subjugation, not integration. And as for Ukraine, the war started in 2014, in the Donbas, following the US backed/funded coup that overthvew Yanukovych. The Donbas asked fo autonomy. The coup govt in Kiev said NO. Donbas asked for independence. Again, Kiev said NO. Russia invaded days later. Thank you for your comment that is entirely consistent with reality (despite the sad, but not surprising, denials or reality). 1. There was no Coup except for the one Putin attempted in assisting Yanukovych to poison his opponent in 2004 with Digoxin, and then later through economic coercion got his puppet Yanukovych to scrap the 2013 EU deal causing the Maidan protest. Yanukovych ran away, as did his entire gov many of which were no where to be found. Even 98% of Yanukovych's own party members voted in the Rada that he had abdicated his position (giving them the necessity to call for new elections). And remember this guy was convicted of outright TREASON for asking Russia to invade Crimea. 2. The Russian language had always been constitutionally protected in the Ukraine constitution, but the country had long been denied it's own identity under it's own language under decades of Russian oppression and denial that Ukraine existed separately. Their requirement of Ukraine as the official gov language of record, and requirement that it be thought in schools is entirely consistent with state powers. This is not unusual, and any disagreements could and WOULD have been worked out without RUSSIA spilling in thousands of foreign fighters and weaponry (MH17 anyone?) to undermine agreements. OSCE reports (as observed by Belarusians, Russians, Ukrainians, Westerners, and West Asians) put the blame for the majority of civilian deaths on the inflow of Russian fighters and their indiscriminate use of bombing (although it's critical of both sides). 3. States don't have a requirement to give in to insurrectionist. Chechnya anyone? Russia was FAR more brutal there, and unlike Ukraine, didn't try to work it out. 4. You're right, Ukraine represents a historical invasion gap which the USSR used to control, and Putin want's to plug, as well as this being in large part about control over energy. Ukraine has untapped energy supply potential, and Putin needs his racket without competition. He thought he'd remove any chipping away of his leverage. This is in part war for oil/energy... again.... Naz' is just Russia's Yellow Cake Uranium excuse. 5. Putler's latest speech about the Baltics just shows he's got irredentist revanchist eye on another invasion gap that runs right though NATO aligned Latvia and Estonia up to the formerly (speaking of irredentist) lands of Germany/Poland in the form of Kaliningrad. 6. The West made nice with Russia-Putin for YEARS... giving all kinds of economic assistance & trying to help Russia re-integrate into the world at large. Germany especially felt it had a responsibility to do so, and has been very hesitant to call a spade a spade here. Russia got far more respect and deference than it had earned. If it had genuinely wanted to integrate into the Europe it would have done as Ukraine has done, and genially work towards reforms (like those the EU requires for membership) but instead Russia seeing that it wouldn't be THE major pole of Europe, decided to go do it's own thing instead. Even Tony Blair lamented recently that Russia never really genuinely got interested in reforming for EU membership or NATO (despite lip service to that and genuine but skeptical interest from the West.)

Taking into account that such man endorsed, funded and armed separatist millitias in a bordering country to rotten the situation and weakening that country immediately after having taking Crimea you can quite easily deduct that from the 4 signatary countries of the fundamental Memorandum of Budapest that guarantees the respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange for their nuclear weapons the two countries that have respected such agreement till now are the United States and the United Kingdom while the one who has clean his ass with the Memo and now he is facing the consequences of his evil and hiddeous acts in Putin. For instance taking into account that according to the Kremlin propaganda itself everyone in Ukraine is an "ethnic russian" that just hate himself and that they are liberating God knows which parts of Ukraine, or the Donbass, or some parts or whatever that asuntion made by the Muscovite rulers about the "ethnic russians" in a country that we don´t consider as legitimate and independent and where everyone use to be "Russian" is just pure and utter nonsense.

It is estimated that Russia has lost up to 15,000 soldiers, if not more, in the war in Ukraine so far. It is a staggering death toll by any standard, especially given the conflict that began just a few months ago in late February. But according to a top Russian lawmaker, its soldiers have essentially stopped dying in the war, even as fighting continues with no end in sight. Andrey Kartapolov, chairman of the Russian parliament's defense committee and a former Russian military officer who previously served as deputy defense minister, said Wednesday that "we've practically stopped losing people," according to Moskovskij Komsomolets, a Moscow-based newspaper. "Currently, of course, there are wounded, but no such number of dead," added Kartapolov, explaining that the government has therefore not provided an updated death toll for some time. The outlandish claim, which borrows from Kremlin talking points that have been contradicted by a number of other reports, reflects Moscow's extraordinary efforts to hide from the Russian public the true extent of Russian military casualties in Ukraine. According to the latest official figures from the Russian government, released at the end of March, 1,351 soldiers were killed in Ukraine. Western intelligence services have estimated the Russian death toll at between 7,000 and 15,000. Ukraine's official figures put the Russian death toll at up to 30,000. A recent report by the independent Russian website IStories, based on an analysis of open-source data, revealed that over 3,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine. Similarly, an investigation by the BBC's Russian Service, released this week, found that 3,052 Russian soldiers have died since the war began. Both reports underscored that the true death toll in Russia is likely much higher, but these were the deaths that could be confirmed based on the information available. Russian President Vladimir Putin's propaganda machine has been working overtime to keep Russians in the dark about how badly the war has gone. Apart from statements by government officials, Russian state news outlets constantly broadcast bombastic claims about the Ukraine war, reassuring Russians that the conflict is going well while repeating the Kremlin's baseless claims that Russian troops are fighting neo-Nazis. In reality, Russia fought for big gains in its unprovoked war in Ukraine, failing to capture the country's two largest cities - Kyiv and Kharkiv. The Russian military has made incremental advances in the east, where its focus has shifted after its unsuccessful campaign to seize the Ukrainian capital, but overall, leading analysts largely agree that the war has been disastrous for Russia so far.

I admire your courage in interviewing and posting on this topic. With some good exceptions, the general ignorance on this topic is depressing. A good job from internal propaganda? It could even be that the same questions in the west would not yield better results. Anyway, Russia agressively attacks a bordering sovereign nation and expects no reaction? Does it really expects other countries to submit to theIr will just because they have a bigger army? Didn’t we learn enough from the past century dead visions of imperialism, fascism and nationalism? Obviously Finland and Sweden, and a growing number of countries in the world, don’t see Russia’s government as a trustworthy partner but rather a threat to their lives.

Antonio, this video is important but, not for the reason you suggest. My fellow Americans need to understand how we are perceived in other countries. In this video we are hearing from Russian patriots, but you do not think about what we are doing. We have the same amount of people that want to invade other countries too. Do not forget what we did in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and there are still hundreds of thousands of people today suffering because of the wars we started. Do not only look at the wrong things Russia is doing, but, use this video as a chance to see how we may be doing bad things too.

@@ranacker Fear is an instinct which I believe most of Finn's have attained towards Russia in terms of a war starting, not by being unprepared. This fear gave Finland the reason to be prepared and not face another winter war when the army was in dire straits during the Soviet Invasion. The army is definitely prepared to throw hands and make it really costly for any and all Russian pseudonyms that want to try but that preparedness stems from a deep running fear and sometimes even hatred towards the Russian way the world is viewed and by an extension how Finland is seen in that world view.

For those being smug in the comments about Finland, here's the history that these "uneducated Russians" refer to. Finland joined Nazi Germany in the war against the Soviet Union to try to get back the territory they lost in the Winter War. They lost of course, but Stalin decided not to take all of Finland, instead granting them a very generous peace deal. Finland retained control of all its territory except what they lost in the Winter War. In addition, Finland would NEVER join any military alliance but would be granted total government independence otherwise, though the Soviets required any major foreign maneuvers to be run by the Soviet/Russian government first. In return, Russia promised never to use military force against the Finns. Finland signed the treaty, and both sides upheld their end of the deal until Finland broke the pact this year by joining NATO. So Russia and Finland actually have a history and an official treaty which has been the cornerstone of diplomacy between the two nations since World War II. Both sides benefited greatly. Finland was able to exercise its own will to become more "western" while the Soviets/Russians did not have to be concerned with the Anglo-American military alliance opening another front on their northern border.
