I attempted to make it to High Country Bus Festival in 2022 when my engine died, and I spent a long trying to get it fixed. Eventually I found a shop in St. Louis that could rebuild it, and one year later I am back with a brand new engine. It's only fitting then that my first trip after a long year without the bus was to High Country Bus Festival in 2023!
I broke the trip up into two legs. First, I avoided the interstate and took Highway 411 up to Sevierville, TN where I stopped at the world's largest Buc-ee's. After that, I traveled up into Virginia and then down into North Carolina, where I ended up at Twin Rivers Campground in Crumpler, NC. The weather was outstanding despite a little rain in the evening. I counted well over 100 Volkswagen buses of all types: Split windows, bay windows, Vanagons, and Eurovans. Plus, there were tons of non-VW campers as well. On Saturday, we had a giant group float down the river.
Then on the way home on Sunday, I passed through Lansing, NC for pizza at Pie on the Mountain before finally heading home. I hope you enjoy my video recap of this trip. Please follow me on social media (links below) for more updates and trips and bus content!
