2 жыл бұрынBack in 2019 we pulled out a 1939 Mercury Coupe that had been sitting in a swap for 50 or more years. Since we brought the "Swamp Merc" home Matt has been dreading starting such a labor intensive project. Thankfully we recently received an email from a viewer Padraic about his 1939 Mercury Coupe. His grandfather purchased the car around 1969 and after his passing the car was passed down to him. Padraic now lives across the country and has not driven the car since the 90s. In 1939 a car's owners manual told you how to adjust the valves and lubricate the chassis. In 2021 a car's owners manual tells you not to drink the contents of the battery.

Another great vehicle rescue! Most home remedy mixes for disinfecting from mouse urine involves vinegar and water mixes or bleach and water fixes but I’m not sure what they would do to the ink on documents. There are commercial products too so I hope you find a way to save those docs but still get them clean. If you have a good local locksmith he may be able to make keys for the car and acc spare lock. And congrats to Mike for his new full time job at ITG!

Call someone who ran a lock shop, the older the better. Those are the kinds that know exactly how to make a key for the car and not damage any lock. We had one not far from me, I worked at a University and when the locksmith there had a problem he always went to same guy for advice or help. It was amazing how easily that guy could make a key for anything without damaging anything.

Guys that is the most pristine barn find I have ever seen! Break the engine loose and wash n wax and she is ready to cruise lol! The frame looks very solid also. Check the gas tank it might be full of crustaceans.

As you said yourself, this car is an amazing Survivor. Do not change anything from stock For Heaven's Sake. Since you have original hubcaps and original optional trim rings leave the wheels alone.

Hey Matt that's a great find. Since it's all original I would keep it that way. I don't think you can find another 39 in original condition that would match this one. Congrats Mike on the move to the hot rod world.

Incredible find guys. this ole' girl deserves a Jay Leno's Garage style refurbishment. Freshen up the interior, go through the entire drive train, clean and polish it and enjoy a slice of automotive history. Might be a good car for the wife. JT: Misfires CC Orlando, FLA

Matt, love the channel! BUT please stay clear of that winch cable!! I have seen them snap/break and cut clean thru a 3" tree limb. We do not want a two part "Matt Dies" special episode. I will suggest a damper pad be added to the cable to protect you guys.

Wow, this brings me WAY back to the early 1960s when I was in college. I was looking for an "old car" and found a 40 Mercury 4-door listed in the newspaper. It was nearby, so I drove over to take a look. Knocked on the door and I was greeted by Jack Elam (look it up) who was selling for his son in the Navy. Paid him $50 for it and a buddy drove it home. Those were the days!

My first car in 1959 was a pea green '39 Mercury. This really takes me back to some very fine memories. She's a beauty, Mike, and I'm looking forward to see her come back to life. I'm pushing 77 with stage 4 cancer now and although I know I'll never be able to bring back those lost joys, it's wonderful to see another generation have the experience. Rock on.

Matt. You are the luckiest car guy in the world! When I was young my lot in life was to save old cars from the crusher (one at a time is all I could afford on a military salary) I would do all of the safety requirements to get them back on the road and sell them (usually at a loss of $) to someone that wanted to finish the restoration of them. I'm glad you are getting the same oportunity to save these old cars. Jim

When you are dragging the car and lining it up to the trailer, the drivers door reflects the camera and tripod, the panel looks so straight, the paint so mirror shiny. Amazing!

What a beauty. I know you guys are in the hot rod business, I get that, but this car deserves to remain "stock". I have a '38 Plymouth P6 coupe in much the same condition as this car and the only "modification" that I've done is switch from 6V pos ground to 12V neg ground. Can't wait to see the old Merc going down the road under it's own power again.

My VW was stored in a big Agricultural building, riddled with rats .The interior had 4" of rat droppings on the floor and in the hood lining. What i found that works well is a small bucket with a couple of inches of bi Carb in the bottom. And you can deodorise cloth seats by rubbing in a mix of bi Carb and vinegar ,which you vacuum out when it dries.

Another “trick of the trade” is to add some coconut oil to the water and vinegar. It stops dogs from fouling in the same place and will neutralise the smell of urine from just about every rodent.

one trick is to put a hot plate under the oil pan to warm everything up before trying to breake it loose .wile soaking the cylinders with your favorit oil.

Reminds me of my high school days when a friend's father had a '40 Ford 4-door with a SBF and a 4-speed. Had moon hubcaps and chrome reverse wheels. Nice paint job but a real ratty interior. Plan was to get it done. Lost track of the friend and the car after high school. Great looking car. Think it deserves to be left alone and just made road-worthy. Be safe and stay well.

It’s rare to find a ‘39 Mercury coupe and even more so in that condition. After a good clean up it shouldn’t take much to get her on the road again if the engine is OK?

Funny, I was working along around here a few days ago and thinking about Matt's decision to go "full time" ITG. Was wondering if Mike was going to become the first "full time" ITG employee??
