Rust-Free Square Body Survivor K5 GMC Jimmy First Cleanup In 10 Years!

Well it's not very often that you come across a rust free square body Chevy anymore, especially a 4x4 K5 GMC Jimmy. But I can't really take credit for finding this one, it was actually my neighbors Mike and Josh that found this one. It has been parked outside with the rear window down for what appears to be 8 to 10 years. But it must have been taken good care of before that point because this thing is a really nice survivor. It is a 1988 GMC K5 Jimmy which is basically the same as a Blazer of the same era. It has a 350 5.7 small block chevy that is TBI fuel injected, with an overdrive automatic transmission. In this video we are going to clean it up top to bottom so that we can see if we can get it running in the next video.

Bolts holes in the rear gate are from a " Swing to open".. spare tire holder....need to source one to make this truck look way better from the rear ! PS Take a look what these things are going for in " Good" condition....not even perfect.....worth bringing it all the way back....LOVE IT ! ( Keep it #'s matching )

One reason why these square bodies are in demand right now (in the Jimmy's case), is that some guy might have played Forza Horizon 5 (in that game the Jimmy is a barn find, and therefore a free car) and wants one irl (preferably in white, because that's the color that Jimmy has in the game).

I bought an old SUV and turned into an overland vehicle. It had slight damage to the rear tail gate. I bought a spare tire mount for 40 bucks and mounted a spare tire to the back. Damage is gone and bonus "coolness" factor. thanks for the video .I always enjoy them while i'm at boring work.

This one hurts a little... I had an 84 k5 Blazer that I bought in 98. I had it for about 10 years and there is nothing that I didn't fix or replace at one point or another. Replaced the motor within a month, added 3 inch body lift, added 33s on wagon wheels, nerf bars, grill guard, dash cover, new upholstery, replaced carpet with vinyl, convertable top, off road lights. I also welded in new panels everywhere with rot and fixed the notorious frame crack at the steering box. I moved and left on my buddy's property and was told it was stolen while in Strasburg, VA. That was about 17 years ago and I still miss it. I took my boys on Vacation to Michigan one year and the trans started failing on the way home. I prayed from Southern Michigan, all the way to Rockville Maryland... just asking God to let me get my little boys home safely. We drove 700 more miles and as we pulled into the driveway, the trans died completely. I just thanked God because he got my boys home safe and sound.

I believe that you are right, Josh, about the 87 first year for the Fuel Injected GMCs. I bought a brand new 86 Chevy with a 305 quadrajet 4 bulb carburetor. Loved that ole truck, had it for 25 years. Should a kept it. The 350 crate engine I put in it at 100,000 miles was a huge upgrade. Running strong after another 100K miles. Great video.

Guess what I have that your going to want, a 1990 GMC High Sierra Jimmy with a perfect interior, seats and more. Doors, front fenders, immaculate, brand new 350 Turbo tranny and more. You can have it all for cheap and you will have enough parts to run it until Junior is in his 40's!

It's such a blessing to see kids helping out with cleaning and washing cars and trucks and helping get them running. Your family is a blessing to me as well as many others. Kids today would rather sit inside and play video games. Kids and young adults are lazy and very disrespectful. Technology has ruined the world. Don't get me wrong I think Technology is amazing but it has become the babysitter. There are cartoons on TV 24/7. Josh, I've seen your Father driving a black crown vic. If it is an ex police car, there is an easy way to undo most of the aggravating features such as Dark Mode, enabling keyless entry w/ keyfob, auto door lock/unlock etc. There is a device called FORSCAN that plugs into the obdII port, and allows these chages to be. made. My brother has had his 1990 blazer for decades. We got him a new dashboard at LMC trucks. #2 cylinder had a slight water leak which regularly scrubbed the oil off the walls and considerable wear. I convinced him to rebuild it since they’re only numbers matching once. Down here in Texas we cram a dirty rag in the fuel cap hole before pressure washing it! But I imagine there’s already a number of contaminants in there already! K-5 fuel tanks are inexpensive. I put one in my 1938/73 Chevy rat rod because the 1938 running boards and 1973 saddle tanks couldn’t be in the same place at the same time. I still have that loose 1973 truck complete minus for your rusty 4X4 project. It’s faster and cheaper than fixing all that swiss cheese!

Old K5 is really solid . Definitely worth restoring the totally awesome works really good if you put it on the steam the area and extract it the steamer with the awesome pulls everything out.

I had one in high school same color with blue flake in it though and the same fox sticker in the back window lol loved that jimmy I had a blazer too in college with a 383 stroker motor I built in class for a final exam passed it and had that motor for 15 years then my cousin blew her up lol

That's awesome Josh. I had an 87 K5 Jimmy just like that but it was 2 tone grey. Great truck but the whole rear 'bed' past the rear seat was rusted out. I would have needed to replace the majority of the floor in the back. Can't wait to see more on this beast.

One of the best platforms to build, everything is available in the aftermarket. They're one of the most popular trucks out there, even more popular than the Bronco and F-Series. You even have enough room for the family and luggage, if you were to go on a road trip. Be happy it was another Chevy that pulled you out of the mud.

The back window is designed to only roll up when the tailgate is shut. I learned it the hard way on my 86 suburban. Lol. Can't wait to see what you do with this. Love squarebody chevy and GMC. 🙏

@Sleeperdude I thought my window motor was bad because It wouldn't roll up with the tail gate down. But once I shut the tailgate I found the motor was good. My suburban sat from 1997 to 2022 with the back window half way down.
