The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten. Directed by DGA award and five-time Tony award winner George C. Wolfe and starring Emmy award winner Colman Domingo, Rustin shines a long overdue spotlight on the extraordinary man who, alongside giants like the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, dared to imagine a different world, and inspired a movement in a march toward freedom. Produced by Academy award winner Bruce Cohen, Higher Ground's Tonia Davis and George C. Wolfe, the film features an all-star cast including Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald.

I was a background actor and I can tell you it was so powerful and moving. Colman and Aml were so captivating and clearly honored to portray such important characters and I was honored just to be there. At the speech scenes, everyone cheered with genuine enthusiasm and even tears it was incredible. Some of the older background actors and marchers were actually there at the march in 1963.

Awesome. My father was Blyden Jackson. The actor was close ish..lol he def was a fighter, knew martial arts, and was the 3rd black marine sgt lol they don't show at the end he and my uncle Joe and Eleanor Holmes Norton, whom he was dating - first black congresswoman, while they sang We Shall Overcome in the circle. Powerful. She wrote about him in her book. He was the "chocolate crumb" 🙄 This movie was very decent.

I discovered Bayard Rustin on my own. I was actually offended that I'd NEVER heard about this man in public school OR college! I found him while researching Dr. MLK's primary influences for the Civil Rights Movement. He introduced Dr. King to Gandhi's no-violent civil disobedience protest philosophy. Looks like they're going to tell the whole story.

If you want to hear more untold stories, read Anne Moody's biography, Coming of Age in Mississippi. I think that's supposed to be her they're showing at 0:52. She mentions C.O. Chinn who was well known in MS civil rights. There's were also professors from India that chose to teach at HBCUs during the movement in support of black Civil Rights. The Indian ambassador to the US at the time wrote a public letter renouncing the treatment of black people by the US government. I could go on and on but needless to say, we all need to know more about these American heroes!

Bayard Rustin, an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, truly stands out as the architect behind the March on Washington. It's evident that his omission from discussions surrounding the activists and leaders of the Civil Rights Movement was largely due to his sexual orientation, much like the marginalization experienced by many women in the Movement. I'm relieved to see that his story has finally taken its rightful place at the forefront.
