Rustoleum Roller Paint, Sanding & Polish Fibreglass VW T4 Hightop Roof

In this video I cover how I sanded back my VW T4 high top fibreglass roof to get rid of 20 years of muck & grime, then roller paint and wet sand the roof to a glossy finish. I plan on changing the colour of the van as the white is looking tired and the roof needed some attention to get it looking fresh again. As I was planning on changing the van colour I could have just painted the roof but I wanted to ensure it was as smooth as the day it left the factory so sanded it with an orbital sander with 240 grit paper. Once the roof was smooth I roller paint the fibreglass roof with Rustoleum paint with a 20% mineral spirit mix. I wet sand the roof between 4x coats of rustolerum, building up the layers to ensure the roof would be sealed with a deep shine. After the final coat I wet sand using 1000 then 2000 grit paper and polish which bring out a lovely glossy smooth surface which reflects nicely.
I did this job in the summer as one of the first jobs because the high top needed painting before I could fit the solar panels.

If I remember right, this was done over a couple of days, paint, flat back the next day and apply another coat, repeat the following day until happy.

So I am doing the same thing to my hi top ford van. I have sanded most back and wondering something. I was planning to use spray primer and spray color and then spray clear coat. You seemed to use a roller, I didn’t know you could get a factory like appearance (smooth / shiny) unless you spray. I’d prefer to roll because it’s outside. What products should I look for as a primer and then paint.

I know this was a year ago, so you probably done did what you were gunna do. But anyways.... I spray painted my van top and it came out pretty crappy, so I sanded it all off and tried the technique above. I got Rust-Oleum paint (the cans, not the spray) and roller painted the whole thing. Even after the first coat, it looks damn good. It's a thick layer and it's nice and shiny, I used the semi gloss kind. I will sand and do one more layer, but I don't even think it needs any sort of gel coat on top. I would do my whole van but I get a little worried doing that kind of thing.

@@jeffreysandone yes I already did the work but I’m happy with the outcome. I ended up getting high gloss oil based paint, rolled it on just one coat, and it came out pretty great. I then sprayed clear coat on it, which enhanced the look even more!

not long, where I started was dry by the time I'd finished the first coat so almost straight after but it was a warm day

it is how it was filmed, the roof was sanded with 240 grit paper, painted with rustoleum, sanded with 1000 & 2000 grit wet & dry then polished, it it now covered with solar panels

Oh, tell me you are not leaving it black. There is a reason that RVs are not dark colors. I hope your AC kicks ass.

+aoksales hi yes it’s going all black, heat retention isn’t a massive issue in the UK and I have permanent ventilation via my skylight and an opening side window to aid airflow if it does ever get too hot, but really can’t see it being much of an issue

+aoksales yeah I wouldn’t do a black van in a hot country but considering the UK breaks out in national celebration when temps reach above 25c, that kinda says it all haha
