Thank you for this video. Quick question: when doing the driver’s side do you need to remove the steering column and clutch/brake pedals?

Thanks for the video. My '62 Mercury Comet unibody needs new cowls and floors. I've been putting it off for years, this looks like the best line of attack, without the risk of structural damage. Far less invasive!

Hope there is a special place in hell for the Ford engineers that designed these frickin' cowl panels on the early mustangs and then didn't even bother to primer or paint them before the mustangs were made. They should be forced, in hell, to replace cowl panels on old mustangs all day long and have to break off all those spot welds.

This video would be more helpful if he showed what tools he used to cut the damaged panel out. Zip disc? Air saw? Drill a hole and use a saber saw? Plasma torch?

Would you recommend painting the replacement piece of cowl floor before welding it in or leave it bare? Are there any welds that need to be drilled out for this type of repair or do you just cut right along the outside edge of the cowl cover? To be able to weld the new panel in on the drivers side, do you need to remove the steering column or anything else that is under the driver;s side?

Could you glue the patch panel in with some of the new body adhesives?
@MustangRestorationsInc
@MustangRestorationsInc 2 жыл бұрын
I would not do that....Mustangs are unibody cars. Meaning that not one particular part is very strong. All the parts welded together is what give's the unibody its strength. The car could eventually sag down without the cowl welded firmly in place.

I would not let this guy touch my car, its not a good idea to take the quick easy way to do cowl work, it just is not a good thing, for two reasons. One, you are going to possibly and most likely miss something that you would not otherwise if you just removed the upper cowl only. Two, you are not really saving any time, partly because of hidden issues found in the first point, and secondly, you will most likely anyway find more damage than just a little patch piece with a hat will be able to fix. A 69/70 cowl for example has a drop off on the drivers side that goes down the side cowls and drains out, often down in there is all rotted too. If you just looking for a quick fix, ok and if you do not care about longevity then cheap out, and do this method. Otherwise do it the right way, if your cowl is rotted at the hats, its also most likely got more rot than you can see. Take your time replace the entire thing, have a glass place pull your windshield and re-install it if you have to, its not that expensive.

And who are you Mr. Know it all ? If you worked on these for a living you would know that the last thing you want to do is pull the top of the cowl of of any car. This may not be the fix for all but its the fix for many....What is the name of your shop? Lets see some of your rust repair work..Go back to sleep under your easy to work on newer Mustangs & leave this stuff to the adults.

Hello I am restoring my 1966 mustang coupe and I have cut the peace that you said from the cowl panel fitted the new one but before welding it I tried putting some water from above the cowl and all the water didn't come out from the lip of the new peace. Some water stayed in the cowl panel around the vent hole. Is it ok if some water stayed there or do I have to change anything?

Hello Chris. The 67/68 has much wider cowl to apron braces leaving only around two inches of cowl to cut and lift up out of the way. Is that going to be enough room to get in there to do this repair? Thanks in advance. Dan

90 percent of the time this is not a great idea, you can not get to a lot of the rust problem and it is either going to leak or if you get it sealed from underneath hold water and rust out , I have repaired these cowls .
@MustangRestorationsInc
@MustangRestorationsInc 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. This method does not work for the more severe rust cases. But unless you have been in the business as I for over 37 years. You have not seen the thousands & thousands of rusty cowls to know how many this will or will not work on.
