I’ve looked at the comments and want to say something. The helmet, although being dirt cheap, is this mans passion. The ability to take an item that is in really poor condition back to the state it was in when it came off the assembly line is honestly awesome. Using this as a decoration is one of the best uses for restored items. To some people this helmet is worthless, but to him, it’s a representation of what he is able to do and is therefore worth much more. I would love to get into the hobby of restoring vintage/antique items.

I have an un-issued French M51 helmet and it looks just like the one shown at the beginning of the video(minus the scratches and dents), the final product looks nothing like a "off the assembly line" look, not to a collector. I have been restoring old military helmets for years, preservation is key.

As a former Sergeant in the US Army, I served from 1980-1990. I am also the son of a retired US Army 1st Sergeant. I still have my old Steel Pot, that’s what we called the old steel helmets, before they were replaced with the new Kevlar helmets. My Father still has his as well. Having seen and played with his for years and later using my Steel Pots and inspecting them after field use, until replaced with the Kevlar ones, I can say that you did a pretty good job, except for three things; the paint should have been a duller olive drab the shine and greenest of the paint is too high, the inside webbing can be washed, and the leather headband replaced (they are sold online), and the leather headband should have the buckle centered in the rear where it shouldn’t cause irritation to the wearer, and the chinstrap you cut off might be hard to find if you’re trying to keep it authentic for the period (my dads was from the 1940’s to 1970’ and that chinstrap that you cut off was the same. However, if you wanted to change the period chinstrap to the late 1970’s to 1980’s, you can still get the newer chinstraps with the webbed chin cup online. The aren’t expensive. I purchased one to fix up a Steel Pot as a gift for a buddy who served with me. They aren’t exactly like the originals but they look good. Other things to look at are the camouflage or net covers used in the different periods. Other than that, it looks like you did a good job in preserving it. Thanks for the video, and march on!

There is some misinformation in the comments I would like to rectify. These specific helmets are not rare at all as they were mass produced and are actually worth their value in metal. In order for modern French helmets to be desirable they would need to be early 1900's, proven to be used in war by someone historically significant and/or be unique in terms of quantities produced and even then they are hard to sell. So this restoration is harmless in terms of historical and collector value.

@Non Nomen You're overthinking it, these helmets were mass produced by the millions and because of the date produced were not actually used in any war, if you feel so strongly about preserving them then go ahead and do it, they literately cost almost nothing. Also please don't compare modern produced helmets to priceless hand crafted war memorabilia, it's like comparing an IKEA desk to a antique Victorian hand crafted desk, you know what! Why don't you start collecting IKEA products I doubt they would exist in 200 years.

The M51 French Helmets were meant to be cheap, mass producted copies of the M1. It's a common error mistaking an M51 for an M1, everyone makes your very same mistake at first. In fact, when someone can't afford an M1, or doesn't want to use a pricey M1 in near mint condition for trivial stuff like military cosplay or historical re-enactments, gets an M51 altered a bit and calls it a day

ellie you seem a bit confused with the meaning of restore. “Restoration refers to the treatment procedure intended to return objects to a known or assumed state, often with through the addition of non original material” I think the word you’re looking for is conserve. “Conservation is the profession devoted to the preservation of cultural property for the future. Conservation activities include examination, documentation, treatment, and preventive care” His title says restore not conserve.

Commenting as I go along... It's not uncommon for inner helmets to be much younger than the armoured part. Straps/linings wear out. Strange the inner helmet has paint on it... in the Belgian army it's just khaki coloured plastic. Refurbishing the webbing inside the inner helmet... while valid in this context it would just be replaced periodically in actual military use (i.e. when it just got too rank or failed). As an overal guideline, military helmets shouldn't have a shiny layer of paint on them, though that may be a limitation of the kind of paint one has access to as a civilian.
@sergeantbigmac
@sergeantbigmac 5 жыл бұрын
And if you dont have the appropriate matte paint, you can also do what they did back then to cut glare; add ground cork to the mix which gives the surface texture and therefore no means to reflect light ...At least thats what Americans did with their helmets, not sure about other countries.

This takes me back to the time when I first got to listen and watch the underrated 1968 hit comedy movie. "Head" was the hit comedy movie that featured the "Monkees." I first time listened and watched it back in 2000 on AMC {American Movie Classics}. This movie was followed by Monterey Pop." This movie contains the released recordings sung and performed by Jimmy Hendrix. In the hit comedy movie called Head: George Mickey Dolenz Jr. said this about the U.S. army helmet he refused to wear. "I don't want to wear it. It presses down on my head." So what did Peter Tork do? He had to bring over a football helmet for George Mickey Dolenz Jr. to wear. Here's what Peter Tork's response was. "Here, I brought you this, I thought you would like it better." George Mickey Dolenz Jr. answered back to him. "Wow, cool, stars." What's Craig Ferguson going to say about this? "That's crazy funny stuff." The 1971 Warner Brothers crime drama movie called Dirty Harry had a different setting compared to the hit comedy movie called Head. What Roger Doetrie said: about the hit comedy movie called Head is, "It had no discernable plot, but it had tons of music." The hit comedy movie called Head is often compared to the 1967 cartoon movie. And that's the Beatles Yellow Submarine. 🎬 🎞 🎥 🎦 📽 🎟 🎬 ⛑️ 🪖 ⛑️ 🎭 😍 ❤

For what little my opinion is worth, here was my thought process in the first ten seconds or so: -Not sure it's appropriate to restore something of historical value. -Actually, these helmets exist in abundance so are individually of little monetary or historical value. -I will thus enjoy watching this artist do his work, as I'm sure many other people will. -Therefore the video has added "value" to the world, not removed it.

@@wolfspirittotem thick enough steel will protect you. This was evident when the first steel helmets started to be worn. More people went into RAP for "head injuries" because they were surviving rather than dying. It can be pretty hard to make armoured steel like AR500 in a helmet shape, so it's usually just flat plate (or slightly curved), but if you canould, an AR500 helmet would be worth it's weight in life. As for nowadays, Military helmets are typically Kevlar. They are about 3/4"-1" thick, tightly woven kevlar, and whilst they'll give you a pretty mean concussion they are usually good enough for stopping rifle rounds. Modern armour plating is Harrdened strengthened steel alloy, not just mild steel, you wouldn't be able to punch through it with a hatchet.

It's a French M51 helmet. 2 bucks it's its exact value, unless it's near mint and used in the Battle of Algiers, with proof. A rusted, dented M51 without any peculiar history it's the rotting thing you can get at flea market for two bucks or less. People uses those things as flower pots or for cheap cosplay props after getting them repainted

If you know anything about basic warfare and snipers you would understand that snipers won't shoot any old infantry their main goal is to eliminate high ranking military personnel and gather intel, they're not going to give away their position and vital intel and waste expensive recourses to take out a petty infantry unit even without considering that the bullet would miss.
