Rusty patina paint job using vinegar to match original paint

Ok this is going to be a challenge... we want to paint the fender skirts to match the original patina of the 1936 Hudson Terraplane. The first step is to mix up some paint to match the shade of navy blue. Then the paint will be applied in a messy/streaky manner so that we can have some metal still showing which we'll cover with vinegar to create a rusty original look 😅

You need to use Hydrogen Peroxide with several table spoons of salt mixed in. This will create instance rust. You should have painted the entire fender skirt with primer and paint first, then sand as much off as you like leaving some exposed primer and paint, then scratch and scuff to your liking, then apply the Peroxide letting dry between coats. Put on as many coats as you like to achieve the desired amount of rusting. Pat dry between coats. Allow to completely dry before final wipe down and top coating. Hope this helps if you even read this. Good luck! So far a great job!!

I usually take a nail and poke 1 or 2 holes in the lip of the can, to allow the paint to drain back into the can, instead of drying in the lip groove. Makes it easier to open the cans too. Great Show, Thanks.

I use vinegar to de-rust metal. I put a old two barrel shotgun in pure vinegar. It took a couple of days to de-rust it. Works great & removes all of the rust. Then steel wool & water to clean up. Rust does start “ growing “ quickly. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Hi Chad & Jolene how are you two? You need to mix salt in with the Vinegar that is what rusts it fast. I have also seen pickle juice and salt used as well. The videos that I have watched they had it rusted pretty quickly but, I think without the salt it is not going to rust quickly and I also think the water collecting on it will dillute it. The videos that I have watched they mixed the salt and vinegar in a spray bottle and sprayed it on. When in doubt how to do something watch a You Tube video, lol.

If you use vinegar, dry it with a heat gun, then apply more vinegar and heat dry it until you get the desired effect. I have cleaned rusty metal with vinegar to dissolve rust, then clean it, then sand it clean. Vinegar is just a mild acid. Just rinse with baking soda to neutralize it and distress the painted metal with steel wool with mild scratches to make it look aged. Good luck, it's coming along nicely.

8:1 peroxide to vinegar with a tablespoon of salt, let it sit and it'll look like old rust in no time. Get a soft brass wire wheel or some sand paper, even paint thinner, whatever you'd like, to remove spots of paint where you think the sun would hit it or the water would pool up, and then you'll have a good spot to put your vinegar peroxide solution. Excited to see how this turns out.

Vinegar kills rust and you should have painted it first with red oxide primer then good paint coverage then scotch brite in certain areas and sand paper until you see bare metal in the areas you want and then salt water with peroxide will instantly rust the metal 👍

Chad vinegar alone won't cause rust it actually removes rust the best solution is hydrogen peroxide with a little vinegar and salt in a spray bottle mix about 80-20 with vinegar being 20 percent hydrogen peroxide bring the 80 add a few dashes of salt shake up , the best way to do is paint the panel as u would painting anything else then remove the paint in the spots you want to rust in a rust pattern and then spray the solution on the removed paint or bare metal can also use browns and redish paints with a brush and Dab to add texture along with nicks and small dings here and there

Black tinting is the dominate color. Always use black to darken a color and make it opaque to hide the background. Red in blue paint makes purple or violet according to the ratio. No red in the blue if you want Dark Blue. There are several dark blue colors in spray can paint that would work.
@jongolliher3806

I thought the color match was really good the first time you checked. Should not have added red but I couldn't really see it on the screen. You lost it when you added more blue and never got enough black back in it. Just too light and needs a bit of black until perfect.

With rust patina the trick is to make it believable. Look at the rust on the car and it usually forms on flat surfaces first then then runs vertically and gathers around edges and flat surfaces because the cars been sitting for long time, where the water runs off. Not horizontally that low down. Also don't over do it, be subtle less is more. Don't worry about the paint colour once it's scotched down it will look cool.

Some iron/steel powder will speed up the creation of rust if you wet the surface with salty water and sprinkle it on. Fine iron filings can be found at science educational supply houses. Remember sprinkling iron powder from a shaker on a piece of white paper and then bringing a magnet up from below.

Should've sprayed the skirt with Vinegar+Hydrogen Peroxide and Salt, and that would've rusted the metal almost immediately. Apply several coats and the patina will thicken. Then follow that up with either a paint or sealer. I like spraying with a clear sealer, which preserves the rust, so that when I paint the piece, I can follow that up with sanding the surface w/o removing the rust.

Get your color on there. Then sand it with 800 then 1000 making sure to make plenty of bare metal burn thrus around the edges, then rinse in the hottest tap water you can find. Let it cool and rinse again, and again. You should have a decent layer of surface rust beginning in minutes.

I have used vinegar and water 50/50 to rust metal parts. I suggest you put the paint on then use a DA with 400 grit to create "wear spots" in the paint. Notice on the back of the hood how it rusted from the edge in. and on the doors and finders where the paint looks like it was warn down and rust took over. Thry to create that look with the DA. Once you have sanded some bare metal, then put the vinegar solution on and it rusts as it dries. The DA should help make the paint look old. Also notice how the dirt on the top has discolored the paint. Perhaps put some test pain on a scrap and when it's still tacky, put a lite sprinkling of dust and see what that looks like.

Former personal painter, I myself hate patina, then the fake patina. More respect if you repaired the rust spots , pounded out the dents, and gave it a decent paint. Good on the chop, make it a sinister ride with a shine. I walk by every rat rod and patina car at every car show, as I know the workmanship, detail and budget cut to explain away the why we did it this way. I’m a paint perfectionist and will never change. Every negative comment to this would be from cheap ass that can’t sand a car to perfection. Go make the fake patina, cause that’s what it is.

Bare metal left unpainted for a day or two will flash off in rust (remember what happened to your tank on the fuel truck?) Check out the back of your skirts tomorrow. Hitting the face of the skirts with a heavy mist of vinegar and salt would probably turn rusty in a few hours. Or you could just drive it around Ontario for a day, and then you could hear the rust happening!
