Rustywells talks about Red & Sonny West... and the book they wrote about their friend, Elvis Presley. Red & Sonny West were friends of Elvis... and did all they could do to help him. Unfortunately there are people that have been told untrue things... or urban legends... and believe those mis-truths. Thanks for listening!

@@peter61967 Dr Nick stayed on because he tried to control what Elvis was taking. Elvis was going to other Drs to get what Dr Nick wouldn't give him! Dr Nick was the fall Guy! A lot of prescribed drugs were for his entourage and some prescriptions were forged! Dr Nick even had a full time nurse on the premises and his meds were only given at certain times. Elvis sent one of the step brothers was sent out to get drugs from another Dr! Red and Sonny threatened him, that he better not bring anymore in! @@sandralybrand9425 I know all of that, but you forgot to mention that Nick owed Elvis a shit load of money, so what Elvis wanted he got from NICK. I don’t like all the sugar coating and avoiding the truth that Nick well and truly over prescribed to Elvis Presley. So by doing this and taking money from him steps over the line of Dr and patient. Nick was not the great guy people make him out to be, he was in it for what he could get and gave too many pills along the way!!!!!

Do you really think Elvis would have taken any notice of a letter?? He probably would have ripped it up without reading it. If he refused to listen to people trying to tell him face to face, he is hardly likely to read a letter.

@@pattynuzzello9035 When you have a intervention it is usually friends and family that are with you and they have you face the consequences of your actions to hopefully get the person to see the error of their ways. Since they had been let go they no longer had the ability to do it face to face as they had tried previously to getting let go. They went to a more desperate way to have this type of intervention.. they did it publicly and made Elvis face his problems in a public way. It definitely embarrassed him in front of his fans and their hope was Elvis would then try to quit the drug abuse and get clean! Again sadly it didn’t work and we all lost Elvis and so it became even sadder for them because now they lost their friend whom the did love and now they would never be able to make it right with Elvis but at least they made it right with Elvis family and most friends!

Joe has been caught in a few videos where he has changed his stories & he keeps quiet about the time Elvis was unhappy with him reporting everything to the Col. It was that bad that he didn't want to talk to him and Joe went back to California for a very long time and couldn't get much work.

Now in todays world, the doctors explain when a certain medication could become habit forming and it is regulated and monitored whereas it was not so back in the 70's.I think that what I heard here was very well stated and very clearly made known that these guys cared about Elvis. It does not matter when or how long it took them to do what they did, what matters is that they took the step to intervene and try to help a friend. Most excellent information and I thank you for sharing. In the 70s the retail pharmaceutical reps, would leave samples of dexatrim, Tylenol w codeine, personal, talking ect... all the good stuff. How do I know, I was a nurse working in Beverly Hills, CALIFORNIA! WE DID PHYSICALS FOR THE STUDIOS. I MET A LOT OF CELEBRATIES! THE BLUE BEATUTIES WHERE ALL THE RAGE FOR LOSING WEIGHT. Elvis used the drugs to help with his pre-existing conditions with his health and he abused it by took them beyond what's prescribed.. I just finished the book from Marty Lacker and his wife.. A Portrait of a friend Marty was deep in drugs addiction too [ prescription] just like Elvis when he stopped working with Elvis he couldn't keep a job because of that, it was tough to a point that his wife was about to leave him, eventually Marty able to kicked his habit but it was Wow, hell of a ride, sadly this happened to Ronnie Tutt and Donnie Sumner who mentioned getting some drugs from Elvis to keep up with his grueling tour, Donnie in particular got so bad he was suicidal and quit touring, that with Elvis blessing because he wanted to get off drugs and sober. Elvis seems to get in the trapped of his own image, he could if he want to fuck it & take off for few years to focus on his health but he could not because everyone is on his payroll.. He could be the one who initiated Sober House/ rehabilitation center with his fame and name but the rule was complicated I think that Betty Ford wasn't around until early 80s few years after he passed. You know this video tells story of Dark side of Elvis as lesson that Rockstar demise is often from the lifestyle they've chosen. I always love Elvis but I know too that he is only human who has a lot good and bad to overcome

A sensationalistic book is not an honest book to begin with and telling the whole world about things you want to keep private and can't handle no more, whatever the reason, is not being honest with your friend face to face. This book was a lethal blow that came at the worst time in Elvis' life. Elvis couldn't defend himself no more and that tell all book (tell all, really? What about the good?) didn't leave him a chance. Also let's not forget it was mainly a revenge and money thing to start with. Sonny soon admitted the book was written out of anger and bitterness and Red who told Elvis on the phone he had lost his house in California because he was fired soon bought a new one in Memphis with the money he got for writing the book. I know they were hurt and Red and Sonny loved Elvis and he loved them but that book never helped out Elvis one bit, it ultimately lead him to die within months while he had other plans for his future. That book was a terrible mistake. Before he passed away Elvis had been saying over and over again, almost every day: where is loyalty, man, where is it? Now they're all gone and they sure can discuss it up there but I'm not sure they agree with your version Rustywells, no matter how good your intentions. Anyway thanks for sharing your thoughts about it and God bless you!

If they really really cared they should have laid it on the line including their jobs longer before the idea of the book, myself I was in shock and still am as I find out the reality of what was going on, and one thing I totally agree, no one made Elvis do anything he did not want to do, having said that what was the point of the book at that particular time if not to hurt him and gladly expose his personal life, my conclusion of the ones that betrayed him, they definitely did not care for Elvis or of the outcome, regardless true fans stayed loyal and will forever..long live the King of Rock and Roll ...We Love You Elvis and Always Will

Has anybody ever wondered about how Elvis truly felt? Not about the book, but why he kept taking all those drugs? Of course, Elvis said to sleep and then to “wake up.” But there are other ways to get to sleep without the opioids and some of the stronger stuff Elvis took. I believe the ONLY person that could have gotten through to Elvis was his mother. Maybe Elvis was just so deeply depressed, he was tired of living?

Yes, there was so much love and good in Elvis' life and in all of his team. But in the later years the stress level grew overwhelming for some, including Elvis. I would note, Rusty, that the book was written and published AFTER Red and others were let go, not before. They were let go for other reasons, and from all I have read, and listened to Red and Sonny themselves say both in the months before and after, I believe their being let go was justifiable at the time. I would like to share my thoughts because I believe, as you all do, that Elvis was and is a very significant and positive influence for the whole world, and his contribution, including that of his team, is worth being honestly appreciated. Elvis' father wanted to let them go several times before, but Elvis would not let him (Elvis told his father "you see their wants, I see their needs.") But apparently Elvis became convinced and allowed their dismissal. Elvis offered them a very generous severance pay arrangement, but unfortunately Vernon didn't pass that on. Only a petty amount, which justifiably angered Red and Sonny. They said they felt "bitter" about being let go like that, and offered that as part of the reason they wrote the book. I can accept that they hoped it would help Elvis to focus on his excessive drug usage, but I feel that was a logic trapped in their bitterness and disappointment. You don't help someone by badly hurting them. In the later months and years they made up - Elvis was ever-forgiving and forgetting. When he saw them first again he said "nice to see you again." If he had lived I believe his life married to Ginger Alden would have brought about the healing he so needed (he and Ginger had decided their wedding date that morning, within hours prior to his death). Please note the following references, which I believe to be important and truthful and up to date at the time of his death: Ginger Alden's and Dr. Nick's books J.D. Sumner - one quote, plus interview about Elvis' life - "The only thing I can say - beside Jesus Christ there is no greater man that ever lived. In any respect - in love of his friends, in loving the world, in giving to the world, there’s no way to express it . . . . beside Jesus Christ, he’s the greatest man I ever knew." - J.D. Sumner Detailed interview: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grloatJju9G-Z30.html AND - THE NEW MOVIE "ELVIS" PREMIERING JUN 24, 2022 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZahocil2JebgKM.html "Elvis is as big as he ever has been." - Tom Hanks, who plays the Colonel in the movie. I know this was long - had to satisfy my heart's feeling at least a little bit. Enjoy and celebrate . . . .

I know Red and Sonny loved him and didn't mean to but they were angry and hit him hard because they didn't know any better. Still it was unjust and unfair. Loyalty man where was it?

rustywells01 Thanks for your answer. Elvis was very, very sick at the time and completely wore out. Still he had hopes for the future and actual plans. That book didn't leave him a chance it was a fatal blow at the worst time of his life. Did the book kill him? Well a lot of things killed Elvis in the last years of his life but this book was the final blow, the one that sent him off for good because it took away his last hopes of being remembered as the person he really was. At least that's how he felt about it. Red said and he was right: 'Elvis was a kid in a man's body who could no longer handle the celebrity he had become'. Let alone fight back his best friends who attacked him in public.

They would have been fools to not take money from the book to survive on until they could get on their feet. I’m sure many people were wanting to hire them after the smear they were put thru as well. Its a good ideal to keep Elvis memory but tell me isn't Priscilla a Lisa the 2people Elvis loved more than any body besides his mom his dad a God. Aren't they doing the same thing it's true what the illuminati says people are worth more dead than alive. Makes you wonder. Its really sad that people take so many people for granted than when they die they miss them a have regrets of what they could have said a didn't take the time to do so people should give them flowers while they ate here not wait until they are dead. Elvis needed. To know he was appreciated a loved when he was here for the wonder humble human spirtual man he was and great Singer Elvis in my option was taken advantage of by a lot of people. Elvis felt he didn't have any one to talk to but God he felt so intensely alone the spark was gone out his beautiful blue eyes. He looked so sad a exhausted in his last concert. He loved his family a wanted them back. He took drugs to fuel his career make him feel energy and to try to forget his divorce of emotional pain he was feeling Elvis died of a broken heart mote than anything. Fame and fortune did not satifie th st man's soul. He was searching for something more. A I believe. He found it in God s love. A God took him home what do think. Sandra Miller a long time fan of the greatest singer who ever lived. 2015I still miss a love Elvis. But I believe. Elvis had a death wish to be w his mom since 1958that's my personal opinion. All 8 doctors stated and were in full agreement after the most thorough autopsy any of them had ever performed, that there was nothing found during the examination that was of marginal significance to cause Mr. Presley to have a heart attack ! The Chief Medical Examiner who was present but not participating in the Autopsy made the announcement stating that basically Elvis died from heart disease. Which in turn caused him to have a heart attack. There was absolutely no evidence found by 8 doctors, that could validate the diagnosis the Chief Medical Examiner presented as the cause of death. But rather a combination of 10 different drugs that were found . Which appeared to have been taken within the last 24 hours. They were unable to give a more detailed analysis of exactly what drugs had been taken within the 8 hours before his death as the contents of Mr. Presley’s abdomen were disposed of before any of us were able to do testing or investigate exactly what was in the content removed from his abdomen/stomach ! I read the book. Let me tell you it was a page turner and an eye opener. The guys were putting up a challenge to Elvis. They tried to save his life. Red was there from the very beginning. He defended Elvis when he was being bullied at school. This was before Elvis became famous. So IMO he wasn't with him for the money. There was no money at the beginning and Red was always there. Unfortunately, Elvis wouldn't listen to anyone. Elvis did it to himself. I loved the guy, I'm still a huge fan. But an addict will do anything to get what they want. Someone should have admitted him to a hospital. Where they could've weened him off the drugs and taken care of his physical ailments at the same time. A good 6 mnths off. Perhaps he would've still been with us. Dr Nick wasn't the only doctor that Elvis had in his pocket. There were others. This still happens to this day... If only he had listened. Maybe if his mom were still alive. But all the perhaps, what ifs and maybes will not bring him back to us. What a waste. Gone so young. 1st Step is to admit you have a problem. Elvis never took that 1st Step.

The worst part of betrayal is that it always happens by a friend! There are a thousand ways to betray, but None of is as dirty as pretending to love! because loving Elvis and intending to wake him up and save his life by writing the most private personal issues of his life to the public. It's like telling someone who is committing suicide; I will kill you if you kill yourself! By writing this book, they do exactly the same thing with Elvis, betrayal is like a muffler, it silently kills person. He talks about Elvis' addiction to pills and his lifestyle and that he refused to listen to anyone talk about it, but he does not say why Elvis was taking painkillers, why he needed them? Truth has two sides like a coin, the problem is we always see only one side of it, not the whole truth, whether you are a star or an ordinary person, everyone's privacy must be respected, that's it.

As an “Elvis Disciple” my initial reaction was , why they would resort to a book?…Then, back in early 90’s I met and talked to Sonny, and you can’t fake what I witnessed with my own eyes, but there is no doubt in my mind that Sonny and Red really loved Elvis. I don’t like putting the blame on the others either, it’s not right.. At the end, Elvis was not in the righteous state of mind to be confronted, had he been, and was more approachable, he might have not passed away in 1977.

@@pattynuzzello9035 Again I ask you even if they would have tried something different in hindsight they mostly did it to try and get Elvis to see error of his ways… sure it didn’t work but at least they tried! I still find it funny that Elvis friends and family forgave them because they understood deep down what they tried to do. Why is it the fans can’t get over it? To me it seems the fans are the ones that are entitled to just continue to hate without true understanding and a rightful cause to do so!

Agreed. I love Elvis but he was human and some of the things that the Col, Joe & Elvis did to Red and Sonny at various times were disgusting and disloyal. Red & Sonny tried everything and this way would have got Elvis the attention needed on the subject to help change. Alas he died before it really could impact.

Elvis had a drug addiction yes but he didn't die because if it. He died due to his colon issues, he needed surgery. Also fyi, sonny said that he learned from Linda that elvis talked to his father to suspend red and sonny for 3 months and give them enough for those 3 months, but vernon instead fired them and gave them a week's pay. Vernon never liked them actually

I don't want to hear anything about Red and Sonny west and the other one, whodared to write that book about private life of Elvis that broke his heart. And they dared to say that they wrote that book to help Elvis to take care of his life. They thought that people are stupid? And how could they help him when he was already near to die. They should only stop talking about Elvis and profiting by his name.

Bro you out in left field. Red and sonny and dave were fired in 76 july. The book came out in August 77 don’t forget what friend records a conversation. Why did red do that ? Oh. He wanted to help elvis. Ya right. They only wrote the book because elvis fired them and they wanted revenge. True friends don’t tell the world what elvis did privately.

I answered over and over the timeline you know by when the book came out and they were fired is not true timeline! They had the idea of writing book for along time! As for them being fired that was mainly because of roughing up the fans and Vernon was cleaning house of the mafia! Do yourself a favor dont always believe the story you have been told! Red and Sonny and Hebler wanted what was best for Elvis and loved him! If Cilla and Lisa and the family can forgive them why can't you? Lol thanks for the comment!

Red West betrayed his best friend. Elvis was a private super star that loved his fans like family. That book did not have to be written to help Elvis, all it did was break his heart. loyalty was so important to Elvis and those body guards betrayed him. Probably what upset me the most in that book was the comments about Elvis's voice. You can see in his last aired concert, how powerful and beautiful his voice was. And yet in that book they talk negatively about his voice. That really pissed me off. There's no way around it. Red knew Elvis all the way back from Elvis's high school days, and for all the things Elvis did for Red and his family, Red's appreciation was a negative portrayed book about his best friend. That book didn't help Elvis in any way, and only broke his heart.

rustywells01 Red was close to a life long friend to Elvis. loyalty meant everything to Elvis. you want to help a best friend you do it privately, you don't jeopardize their career and humiliat them publicly. There's no question Red loved Elvis, there's also no question in my mind that money was a factor. but he had the type of relationship with Elvis that he could have pulled him to the side for however long it takes. Once you write a book and put it out there, you've destroyed a man. I beg to differ with your opinion. But respect it. What bothers me the most of all of this is the point that I said, I would love for once to hear Red say I really feel terrible about that. That's what bothers me the most. That's my main point.

rustywells01 your welcome. it's true in the things I read in his last years he was pulling away from his old crew. And I understand how those guys were loyal to him for all those years and how hard that must have been. But there are reasons for everything. If Elvis was pulling away, just like he was trying to pull away from Colonel Parker, you can bet there were valid reasons. They were fired by Elvis's father for a reason. there's always more to the story. I I just don't think writing a book that's permanent in print was the right thing to do. But to each their own. The most amazing thing of all of this is us still caring and talking about him over 40 years later. he sure left an impact on all of us.

Great comment, I have stated many times in follow-up videos and in my room ...yes, they were let go prior to writing the book fir law suits about beating up fans ...they knew their time was running out to get through to Elvis and since he was more and more recluse they were getting more desperate....so writing a book was one idea they came up with...sadly the timing of the book made them look very petty and vengeful even though their true intent was to save Elvis! Thanks again for your well thought out comment!

It is saddening to me that most commenting here (and indeed most of Elvis' friends and associates at the time) do not seem to know about Ginger Alden, and have not read her book. She and Elvis had just decided on their wedding date within the last 10-12 hours of his life. He was not "recluse," though he may have seemed so to Red and Sonny since they did not know him closely any longer. He was looking forward to having a son with Ginger and to leaving for his "best tour ever" the next day or two. Such a beautiful, talented, powerful and deeply loving and spiritual person - I delight in seeing that this is how is fans and lifelong associates recognize and remember him. This is why the producers/director say they made the upcoming movie, "Elvis" - to set the world's memory straight about him. Still I can understand Red and Sonny for their perspective at the time, given their circumstances and yes, given that Elvis had let the stress of the years weigh too heavily on him, on his health and often on his behavior towards others. Thank you for keeping his truth and his rightful destiny alive.

He was too generous. Is all too sad. I can tell you it is hard to stop prescription medications. A dr has to be the legal profession. But was the times also. Elvis loved but he was human. He had jumped into stardom so fast. He lost freedom and trust. I pray Red and Sonny made peace. I pray was done for to help. Times different now. Just love that voice and that young happy Elvis.

@@rustywells5385 It's not just time to let their hate and disdain go. It's time to look at things from the points of view of the people around Elvis, and understand why they made the decisions they made. Sonny once said that Elvis was a law unto himself, and wouldn't be told anything he didn't want to hear. If they upset him they could easily find themselves out of the group and from there you can have no influence at all. The first step in solving any problem is to first understand that there is one. Elvis never thought there was one. As far as he was concerned he understood what he was taking fully. Therefore there was no problem.

Elvis died of many more complications, he had a heart attack, due to plac in his arteries. People don't understand the complications of eating too much fat. He had high blood pressure, diabetes, glycoma, arterial sclerosis, and couldn't stop working because he had given away his fortune, and he had a payroll to meet. People depended on him. When he died he only had 5 million, and very little in the savings account. It was hard for him to do the same thing over and over. He also had fybromyalgia, that's what I have and it's pain all over your body, just now they are starting to treat it with meds. Read the book " Destined to die young" it explains a lot of the REAL REASONS. U

Sadly, these friends should have done it differently. The book was a betrayal written in anger, and written to make tons of money and to cause shame. These two men were not the only ones who have betrayed Elvis. All the men and women who "loved" him are making money from his name. It seems to me they loved the money more than the man. They keep the upstairs of Graceland private to show love and respect? How silly that seems. The bottom line, like me, or anybody else, ultimately Elvis was responsible for his decisions and choices. RIP Elvis.

I agree it was written a small part in anger however explain what do you think a intervention is? This was nothing more than a intervention a way to make Elvis face the issues and hopefully make changes! Interventions can embarress you because it has people confront you and expose your actions and how the effect you and others around you! Also as for the book it was Wrote by Red and Sonny and Hebler... 3 men.... The book was sold in paperback for $1.95 ... If you know anything about book sales you may receive 25 cents for each book sold and the rest goes to printing cost and distribution etc so 25 cents split 3 ways doesnt make anyone rich... And it didnt! Red and Sonny were allowed to be part of EPE events till the day they passed with open arms by Priscilla and Lisa so if they understand why is it so hard for you and others? Lol

Some fair points wouldn't blame the book on Elvis death it was a combination of things that led to that. From those who were there at the end with him the book troubled him and he prayed and wondered how he would be recieved by the fans after. We the fans and public didn't know much about him until after he died before the bodyguard book it was all how he presented himself in public. He didn't do hardly any interviews but we do know as Elvis said himself the image is one thing and the human being is another. The private life remained well protected. Values then are very different to what they are today. People today are more understanding of addictions back then much less so. To be seen as out of control and on drugs would be very humiliating for Elvis he had always stood against drugs he had suffered a loss of pride when Priscilla divorced him that sent him down..based on what you know about Elvis do you think he would have driven him further down or up by the revelations ? To me it was all too late. People talk about him being in a rut in the movie era..the real rut was the concert years after Aloha 1973 -77 he had a massive career high with the satellite concert...and was on the treadmill straight back after and had nowhere to go but down.

Elvis was the kind of creative person that had to have new challenges. Whenever he had a new challenge he got himself in shape layed off the drugs except what he needed for his ailments, and threw himself into whatever that new challenge was. That's why he really needed a different manager. He was making plans to change his life after the upcoming tour. He was going to get rid of a lot of people and take time time off and get himself healthy and go on a gospel tour. Sadly, it was too late. He'd hinted he was getting rid of Parker also.

Lois... Um well, probably because he was Elvis. The problem today is that drugs are everywhere... I doubt there is anyone alive that doesn't at least know someone that is dependent or has been dependent on drugs, prescription medications... countless other things. When Elvis was in trouble with the medications... No one really understood the problem then. The medications he took were prescriptions. There really wasn't a set standard then on how to deal or handle dependencies and addictions. In a way... Elvis and many many others paved the way to wake the world up to their dangers... and that the problem does touch everyone. From the celebrities, to the homeless... sadly.

Red West did it out of spite, did it for the money, Red knew Elvis's days were limited as did others. The fact Red recorded conversations or a conversation with Elvis, how deceitful is that? Elvis did not blackball anyone. Red is lucky he was never sued. Charlie Hodge only mentioned after the death of both Elvis and his fathers that Elvis was suffering from bone cancer while Elvis had other health problems. Was Elvis addicted to prescription drugs? of course he was. Elvis was the product, without Elvis there was no product. The demand for Elvis to produce was enormous. No one had a payday unless he produced. Elvis was employment for hundreds of people. If Red West didn't make a fortune from the book that speaks volumes on what his fans thought of his actions.
