Ruth Carol Taylor was the first African-American flight attendant in the United States. She was born in Boston, on December 27th, 1932, and attended Elmira College graduating as a registered nurse from the Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City.
Taylor was determined to challenge the discriminatory practices of the airline industry by applying for a stewardess position at Trans World Airlines (TWA). When she was rejected, she filed a complaint.
She applied to Mohawk Airlines when they decided to hire minorities and was hired in December 1957 out of 800 applicants. The following year, her training was complete and she was ready to take to the skies.
But just six months later, her career ended due to the airline’s marriage ban, a common practice among airlines of the day of dismissing flight attendants who either married or became pregnant. Although her flying career was short-lived, it had not only changed the aviation industry forever, it had also been a major coup in the fight for black civil rights in America.
