He had to be felled with regrets over it knowing that he had that snake by his side and she was killing/hurting his kids and framing the other wives including the wife he said he loved the most! All the mistrust, torment and the pain he caused her were all due to that evil snake he had by his side even when his wife warned him he refused to believe her and instead punished his wife repeatedly, humiliated her to the point where she gave up on him now he sees the true colors and feelings of the woman he raised and loved to have by his side and bed! I’m so happy that she told him that she never loved him! so he knows that he was a complete fool!!!

How ironic... The Empress Dowager sent spies to infiltrate the Emperor's bed chamber with the goal of obtaining a prince that she could groom in order to control the Empire. Not one of her spies and their sons survived. Here is Ruyi, whom she despised because she was the neice of her rival, pleading the Empress Dowager to raise and protect her last remaing son. How can the Empress Dowager not admire Ruyi, and towards the end, avenge Ruyi.

Madam Wei has murdered approximately 16 people by false accusations, poisoning, or "accidents " that were actually murder. Being made to bow in front of each scripture flag to release them from hell to rest in peace was actually the kindest part of her punishment. Being poisoned with slow acting poison then given the antidote a few hours later every day for 9 years would've been horrific . The empress dowager persuaded the emperor to end it after 9 years because Madam Wei had gone mad and her children were all grown up.

In this show, it was his own conscious. He spent his days in the show after her death regretful and miserable. I know that wasn't real life but for the show's purposes I appreciate he had to live with his own failure.
