So, what do you do about building a complex aircraft like the RV-10 when you're not a pilot? Can you do it? How do you then fly it and / or learn in it..etc.. Or is there another solution?
Well here's mine..

@tc0330 3 жыл бұрын
@@anthonycastellani7470 no, you need retractable gear as well and technically moveable flaps. 1,000 HP in a fixed gear airplane is just high performance. Caveat is seaplanes obviously can’t have a retractable gear.
@CaptainCharlieBravo
@CaptainCharlieBravo 3 жыл бұрын
It must have a retractable gear to be considered “complex”. High performance is over 200 HP. Constant speed prop does add some complexity but won’t get you the endorsement. I’m building an RV14 and will be traveling to Oregon to fly with Mike Seager, Vans Factory Pilot, to get the 10 or so hours in my exact model before flying. Not only does it count for my high performance endorsement, but gets my the transition training completed and also gets my insurance requirements knocked out. That’s probably the best use of your time and money once you get your ticket. Best of luck!

@@anthonycastellani7470 the hardest part about getting the HP might be finding the plane. Complex is a bigger step than HP. Instrument is a *much* bigger step than HP.

CONGRATS ON THE 140!!!!! You're a real deal flying play owner! Congratulations. Enjoy the snot out of it. You need a HP endorsement to fly your RV10. You can (and probably should for you anyway) get that before you take the private checkride. Just takes a flight or three in a rental 182 or something similar. Some FBO somewhere in the US rents one. Its just a matter of finding it, traveling there, and doing a few flights over a weekend and getting signed off. Easy peasy. You should also get your private done before you finish the plane. You've still got time. Lots of options to make that work out. Also I vote for flying videos and build videos all in one place. Congratulations again. So exited for you. Also, liking the green screen piece to camera in the home studio.

I am not a pilot, and I am 2 months away from finishing my build. I am also about 4 months away from finishing my pilots license. On the topic of flying videos and build videos. I would just combine them on this channel, and label the flying videos with some header that separates it from building. If people don't want to watch, they won't, and that will let you know. But I suspect that the same who follow you on this build, will also follow your flying adventures. Heck, maybe even more people will subscribe? You never know. Cheers from Winnipeg.

A ferry permit is for essential crew only. Anyone who fly's with you at this stage other than an instructor will have to be on your insurance, and only they can log the time as PIC. As a student, you will have to be signed out by an instructor for each flight you solo in. The only time you can log dual is with an instructor. Remember that the teck logs will need to shipped to by UPS or Fedx as you will not be able to carry them in the airplane when you pick it up. Journey log yes, Teck log no. I watch your show not just because of what you are doing, but because of how you do it. You are your own brand and the RV10 is only the by product. Take Flight Chops for example. Thanks Jason, you are doing good, keep it up.!

Bought a C172 and a -14A empennage kit before I could fly. Really appreciated having my own plane available to fit my schedule versus trying to schedule rentals weeks in advance. And once I could solo, spending time in the pattern or practicing maneuvers. However, I spent all the extra time learning to fly instead of building. Now that I have that PP ticket I need to spend that time building...or actually starting the build. I would expect you will also appreciate the ability to go jump in and fly when it fits your schedule. And thank you for the videos!

Hi Jason, I have been watching your RV-10 build videos, i have noticed your confidence grow as you are building, I think it is great, buying an aircraft that you can fly now will be great for you. I am going to build my own RV-10 soon, and will use your videos to help me. As you said, you don't need to be a pilot to build an aircraft, but what is the goal of building an aircraft? to fly it!! so yeah, you should be a pilot so you can fly the aircraft you built. Good luck, I like your videos.

Congratulations on the new airplane. A Cherokee 140 is a great learning platform. However, please take your flight training seriously and absorb as much as you can. I have a few hundred hours in RV's and the RV 10 will get away from you if you are used to the Cherokee. It's easy to fly and very honest, but the rate at which things happen can cause you to get "behind" the airplane. I am really looking forward to seeing your flight training videos!! Such an exciting time and it will be great to watch. You have me beat on building an airplane though. All respect to you.

Congrats on the new plane! My first plane was a PA-28 as well (an Archer which I still have as my profile pic). They are awesome. As long as you got a good pre-buy inspection from someone you trust, then you can trust it'll be a great plane regardless the age. 2 pieces of unsolicited advice: #1. have your local A&P do another pre-buy when you get it home or have them come out with you to pick up the plane. Having them do an inspection beforehand will save you & them a lot of headaches to know what you & them are getting into. #2. look into getting a partnership with someone else who has experience owning. There's a lot of nuances involved with owning (bookkeeping, insurance, etc) & having someone experienced to help out with ownership details, keeping the plane flying regularly, and with payments helps out a lot in the longrun...

Regarding your spidey sense vis a vis your friend's airplane....yes. I started getting my ratings in the late 80s and now fly professionally, and back then I was flying Cessnas and Pipers that were less than ten years old. Fast forward 30+ years, and those same planes are still the "newer" airplanes in the GA market. Yikes. I have been looking at the GA market for several years and almost got into a partnership in an early model Mooney that looked to be in good shape, but I couldn't bring myself to flying an airplane with my family on board that was older than me, and I had no idea who had flown that airplane long before the current owner, the previous owner, etc. I backed out and went all in on the RV-7 I'm building now. The Cherokee 140, as long as it's clean, is going to be a great time builder. It's finding the right plane is the hard part anymore and if that Cherokee is one of those mechanically sound gems still out there, then you'll be good to go. You'll get everything out of it when you go to sell it, maybe even more?

I'd take one or two partners in for that Cherokee. You got to bring the fixed cost down and there is always something that needs attention and with partners you can take turns on bringing it to the shop, annuals, etc. and you will have more time to finish the build. Also, you might find a partner that had a plane before so he will be familiar with all the AD stuff and maintenance.
@LTVoyager
@LTVoyager 3 жыл бұрын
I had a partner when I owned a 182 and it worked out great. Just select a partner with similar flying and maintenance and cleanliness philosophies and it works out great. We wrote up a simple agreement and it worked well. We almost never both needed the plane at the same time during our 6 year partnership and our agreement had a tiebreaker clause to handle that. The cost of flying was cut dramatically with essentially no loss in utility.

Congratulations on the new plane! If you have the spare time, I'd definitely recommend reading Mike Busch's books on engines and aircraft ownership (at least the book on engines). There's some great takeaways on operating your new cherokee and eventually your rv-10. Don't worry too much about the amount of hours on the 140. Planes that have few total hours compared to their age are generally the ones that need a closer inspection.

Dude! HUGE congratulations for your new pa28-140! That’s awesome! I have a Cherokee 140 as I build my rv9. I love it. And it’s a very forgiving airplane for student pilots. If I can make a genuine suggestions, please don’t get fixated on filming your training in your Piper. There’s nothing wrong with sharing a few clips here and there, but you should probably focus on practicing your maneuvers, pilotage, air speeds, stalls, take offs, landings, etc. regardless what anyone says, the checkride isn’t “easy” and you will be challenged. Once you get proficient, then have fun with the videos. I’ve got over 300 hours in a pa28 and I continue to enjoy owning a Cherokee 140. It’s cheap to own and fly. I ended up doing a full avionics upgrade in mine and get this...putting some thought into installing an auto-pilot. Because, why not? It’s my plane. I can’t afford to own a bonanza or a cirrus. So I’m getting great use out of my Cherokee 140 while I take my time on my rv9. Best of luck with your projects!!!

Congratulations on the Cherokee! That said I'm going to turn into a bit of a wet blanket. I'm glad to hear you are taking the safety element seriously. So when I say flying the first 40 hours is best handled by someone experienced in the type please understand that's exactly where I'm coming from. I get the eagerness to fly your airplane built with your own hands but please consider that getting your ticket is the minimum requirement and test flight is not a minimum skill level task. Welcome to aircraft ownership! My condolences!🤣🤣🤣 I'm a C-172 owner. You'll be looking forward to getting your RV-10 done after dealing with issues regarding your certified aircraft. Owner authorized maintenance on certified aircraft is very limited. Darn near every upgrade will require an A&P/A&P(IA). Along with that comes the bill. You'll be lucky if your 1st annual under your ownership doesn't uncover some delayed maintenance. You finish your RV you can apply for your maintenance ticket for it. You'll be able to do any maintenance you want. Everything is cheaper for experimental aircraft also. I want both an RV-10 and RV-8 so I'm torn. Since I'm already flying I have the luxury of thinking about. lol My request...Keep the vids separate!

Thoughts as the video was playing.... 1) get a Cessna 150/152 or, since you have a RV, a Piper 140. VIOLA!! Piper 140!! (Remember WHERE the Trim Lever is!!!!! Got caught with THAT little mistake... once! Yeah, I trained in Cessnas... don't judge me! =) ) 2) The day of.. or at MINIMUM, the Week of passing the PPL (weather permitting), find a Piper 6 or even an Arrow (200+ hp engined, Constant sped prop) and start flying that to get the High Performance endorsement. Even if it has Retrac gear... that's a plus too. 3) I believe there are specific RV Flight Instructors that can help the transition from 'Wichita Wonders' to RV's. Do that!! Get THAT sign off before flying YOUR RV. 4) Remember, there is a AGE OLD Tradition. The FIRST Person to fly a new plane... gets to keep a set of keys TO that plane. So if after getting signed off in RV's, fly YOUR plane around the pattern, once, and then have an experienced Pilot take it out and see what needs adjusting. 5) Yes, please include the flying videos with these build videos. EVERY video is a learning tool. Congrats on the 'new to you' plane! Enjoy the experiences!!

There are many Test Pilots out there that are compensated by you to take the risk of "first flight" and even Phase one testing. Do not be afraid to use one. A good test pilot will do a thorough preflight and will do ground/taxi test runs before lifting off. I personally used one for my Zenith. I also am less concerned since it is a well known kit...if you had designed and built an airplane from scratch on a design that has never flown it would be more of a concern. I am and was a Private Pilot before taking on the project.

You will need to find an instructor who is willing to walk you through the whole process, but it can be done. QUESTION: What is a complex aircraft -- Doug A ANSWER: A complex aircraft is one which has manually or automatically controllable pitch propeller, flaps, and retractable landing gear. To be legal to fly a "complex airplane" under 61.31, you need a sign off by a flight instructor. FAA Order 8710.3E defines a complex airplane for the airplane single-engine land or airplane multiengine land rating as one that has a retractable landing gear, flaps, and controllable propeller. A complex airplane for the airplane single-engine sea or airplane multiengine sea rating is one having flaps, floats, and a controllable propeller. A controllable propeller may be controlled manually by the pilot or automatically controlled by a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system. List of complex aircraft includes: Arrow, C172RG, Cardinal RG, Seminole, Dutchess, and Diamond Twinstar. QUESTION: What is a high performance aircraft. -- Doug A ANSWER: A high performance aircraft (according to 61.31) is an aircraft with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. List of high performance aircraft includes: Cessna 182, Cirrus SR22. Note that these aircraft do not have retractable gear.

I would suggest that you at least start the process, because you never know you may not be able to obtain a medical certificate for some reason. That aside I would suggest your end goal be to become an INSTRUMENT rated pilot. if for anything it could save your life if you accidentally get stuck, you cant always just land or RTB

Guys, sorry to tell you, but you missed the main question or answer the goods questions : Many pilots pass their licence and fly solo for few hours and after quit aviation activities. I saw many. Why ? Some guys after some stressing experience of facing some chalenges like encounter very bad wether situation or some failure in the aircraft (rented aircraft or their own aircraft) abandon aviation or find the activities not so fun and too stressfull.... If you dont have your private licence before investing too much in your project, this fact could be your main concern. Not only the fact that you have to accumulate more than 100 hours before obtain your aircraft certification type (for an RV10) and your insurance. At the end the question is not only "legal" but insurrance could charge you a lot for cover the risks if they agree. My suggestion : stop building and go fly and pass your licence first. Pass The licence tests is also a challenge by itself. Think about it.

Hmmm I think it's worth getting that license before building the plane. You can assemble the plane without being a pilot but you won't have intuition and opinions that come from first-hand experience. Things like what kind of controls and instruments do you prefer, what creature comforts do you wish you had, what kind of typical problems do airplanes have that you might want to be especially cognizant of while building. You learn to play a musical instrument before you choose a semi-professional model and you certainly wouldn't want to order a custom instrument before you've even learned to play because you wouldn't have the slightest idea what to customize.

Never commented before but have been watching the whole build. You said a few things that have me confused. You mentioned the “phases of flight” what did you mean? Also you mentioned flying solo and having 40 hrs in the junker.. how many hours of dual instruction do you have? I could be wrong but as long as you have instructor with time in rv10 you can fly with them once complete. So you plan on taking check ride in the piper? Love the videos and will like the flying ones I’m sure. Keep up the good work!!

I believe a "complex" aircraft must have constant speed prop, flaps, and retract landing gear. It is only a high performance airplane. Congrats on the "new" plane.

Is it complex because of the constant speed prop?

So while it's true that you have to have an endorsement to fly high performance (201 horsepower) or higher, a lot of people pick that up during their primary flight training. Complex/high performance endorsements only require a log book entry from a CFI but no special written test or checkride. Plenty of people earn their private pilot tickets in high performance and/or complex aircraft and the examiner can and will test you on the systems in the aircraft you are flying in. So you can take your primary (private pilot) flight training in your RV10. The challenge you face with a new RV-10 build is the requirement that it be test flown for at least 25 hours over a non-populated area before an airworthiness certificate can be issued which is required before you carry passengers. During flight training, your CFI is PIC (pilot in command) and you are a student which would make it illegal to use the aircraft for flight training until you've obtained the airworthiness certificate. This leaves you with the option of obtaining your license in another aircraft or having a certificated pilot perform your test flight for you before you start training.

I'd rather see your flights in a separate channel that I would subscribe to anyway. I can imagine not everyone interested though

you need a flight instructor to certify you to be able to solo before you can get a check ride.

Same. I joined a local EAA chapter that is building a plane so I get to work on it once a week or so (video coming). No money for my own kit right now though

I’m sure it’s been said, but it’s a High Performance, not a complex. You can do your private and even solo in either. I did my solo in a Cherokee 235 which is a high performance.

Do you have medical yet? Get your class III sooner than later. That way you can then do basic med and fly that plane. If you don’t get a class three, and then you start having some minor health problems, you may never be able to fly on your own.

BTW, methinks you are still less than 1/2 way thru the build. Wiring will be another MAJOR project, in and of itself (and do a number on your back), not to mention the firewall forward activities and organization ..... But, keep at it.

A high performance endorsement is easily done----- Buy a CFI and rent a C182 for a few hours to get that High performance endorsement AFTER you have gotten your Pilot certification!
