RV 101® - How to Inspect your RV for Water Damage

It doesn't matter if you are purchasing a used RV or if you already own an RV, it's a good idea to periodically inspect the RV for any indications of water damage. If you catch a water leak early it is easier and less expensive to repair, as opposed to a water leak that had time to spread and do more damage. In this RV 101 video, watch as Mark Polk with RV Education 101 demonstrate how he inspects an RV for water damage.

This video saved me 45 grand today. Watched it on the way to check out the trailer and managed to identify hidden water damage between the slide out and garage section. The slide out would have had to have been completely removed from the trailer, then the wall and floor removed and repaired by professionals. Easily dodged financial ruin with 20 minutes and a flashlight. Thanks guys

we just bought one and ours has water damage on the sides and back and roof.... It's not wet on inside roof, but it is stained. And the bubble is bad on outside, Well that was a bad investment. So how expensive and what do you need to do to repair the outside?

Mark, when checking the roof of the RV which has a fiberglass coating, not rubber, what do you use to reseal a seam. everyone says not to use Dicor Lap Sealant. Only found a small area that has potential for water leak but we want to seal it and do some re-seal on a couple of other spots.

Hi Katie Lee, I always use Dicor self leveling lap sealant on fiberglass roof surfaces. It is designed for any horizontal RV roof application.

Every so often I get water dripping from my satellite housing. I inspected the crap out of my roof and around the dish and found not even a pin hole.

It's hard to say without actually seeing it, but water always takes the path of least resistance. Did you try removing the housing from the inside to investigate further? You might want to take a hose on the roof and wet the area while someone watches from inside. If water appears the area around the dish on the roof needs to be resealed.

@@rveducation101 Could it be possible to simply remove the dish and housing altogether or would patching the hole on the roof be too complicated?

@@Rockhound6165 It would depend on how capable you feel about doing the job. You could try resealing the area first. Clean the surface good with a roof cleaner compatible with the roof's surface followed by some denatured alcohol on a clean rag. Remove any loose or peeling sealant and reseal around the area where it is mounted to the roof, using a sealant compatible with the roofing material.
